Wheel Offset. Getting The Best Stance And Performance With The Perfect Rim

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Wheel offset, wheel back space and scrub radius are very important measurements. Many of us have bought wheels that just didn't make our 4x4 look how we wanted it to. I have developed an easy method to measure our desired rim offset and order the best wheel for any build. I'm sure this isn't the only way to measure wheel offset but to me its the best way to get what we want because we choose our tire placement first. This gives us the opportunity to choose our stance first instead of guessing what it will be with the wheels we buy. I think in order to get the best fitment we need to work in reverse order and start with tire placement instead of the other way around.

Another thing to consider: more scrub radius outboard of the steering axis = more torque steer if it's a driven wheel (4WD/AWD/FWD). This is that yank the wheel out of your hands feeling many 80s/90s turbo Chryslers were plagued with. If you want more poke, the solution is simple: just make the wheels/tires wider. :)

Looking forward to the final specs on the wheels and tires. I'm running 17s on my Disco 3 in Ireland. Tires are 265 70 R17 Toyo Open Country. So plenty of side wall and the ability to drop the tire pressure right down for running on the soft sand at the beach. I often wondered what was involved in getting a 12.5" wide tire to fit. Making a 33 x 12.5 fit, involves more trimming than I'd like to do, that is according to the Internet at least. Love the content Nate, I was happy to get a video on Friday and not late on Sunday evening (Irish time) thanks again for the brilliant content.

Appreciated… just bought some nitto ridge grapplers (35”) had the put on the 20” wheels i had on my Jeep jk, but not real happy with how far they stick out from the fender ( i want it to stick out more “negative offset” ) only sticks out what seems to me like an inch, maybe less. And i have wheel spacers as well but not sure what size. I’m going to buy a new wheel set for the mud tires I replace which are still good and look way more aggressive than the nittos. Couple things to consider on your tire choice for the LR3. I bought the Johnson Rod lift rods for 2.5" air spring "lift". I used to run 285 (11.25") 65 18, on factory wheels with a 1/2" spacer. The spacer was required for clearing the front upper a arm. The tire would not stuff up into the wheel wells but it would tear up all the inner mud liners, sheetmetal under the flare and would rip flare off now and then. Then I bought American Racing, 1 inch negative offset and removed the spacer; not much changed. I now run a 275 65 18... they still rub, just in different places. My rig is a Java Black 2007 LR3 with the (cough cough) Ford 4.0L V6

Hey Nate - believe it or not the ABS system in your LR is the same that's in my H1 (Wabco). To diagnose ABS codes on our trucks we have to jump Pin 4 and 15 in the OBD2 port with a paper clip - then we count dash light blinks.

Nate, look up 'Discovery 2, 3 Amigos' should tell you a lot about the lights you've got on the dash. It's a very common thing with D2's basically brake warning, abs and hill decent lights, the slightest problem in the traction control system will bring these lights on. Scan tool is a must to find out where the gremlins are.

How does axle width affect scrub radius? The angle through the ball joints the back spacing of the wheel and the tire size are the only things that affect your scrub radius. By increasing your tire size you can decrease your scrub radius. Love the videos and love seeing a non jeep build as a non jeep wheeler.

To whomever questioned the dodge dana 44/60 do a little bit of research... certain years of those dodge 4x4s used ‘center axle disconnects’ on the 44 fronts. Somewhat undesirable but companies do make kits to eliminate the C-A-D and beef up the axle. Torqueking.com is a great resource for those axles.

This is super tricky to answer and it changes frome vehicle to vehicle. I would say anything under 3" is damn good for 1/2 ton- 1 ton axles but under 4 is still not bad. As this distance grows so does the strain. But this might not be true for a samurai axle or IFS. This is why it is tricky and without data from proper testing it's all just anecdotal.

Great content as always! My GM DRW Dana 60 front is too narrow for my taste. The wheels are tucked up under the truck like a 2WD. 2” spacers are no good with how it drives (mostly a hauling a tow rig) but it gives it the look I’m after. Would you swap to a newer wider axle from a Ram or possibly a Super Duty Ford D60 or figure out some expensive way to have mine widened? I realize I’ll have to switch from passenger drop to driver drop if swapping axles.

Very good video. You did a great job explaining it! So many people go and throw -38 offset or more wheels on their Wranglers then wonder why they drive bad, have shimmy, huge turn radius, and stuff wears out so fast. Wish everyone would watch and learn about proper steering setup.

Just drove my lj on the highway for the 1st time since doing a front axle swap, 3 link front, triangulated 4link rear, both trussed. We had to remove the rear sway bar for the new suspension. Still need to align the front and install the new rear shocks. The jeep feels very unsafe at high speeds on a winding road. Is this because of having no rear sway bar or would the sway bar make no difference?

Where did you get the 5x120 to 5x5 adapters? I see a lot of them I just can't tell which are well made and which are trash. PS hope you got the Nanocom.

Concensus seems to be 4.56 for 33s and 4.88s for 35s.

Hey nate just curious about something I caught, on the wife's rig, those wheel adapters aren't hub centric? Is that something that you're concerned about? I currently have non hubcentric 1.5" spacers on my sequoia that the previous owner installed and I've been debating removing them. Thank you!

Thanks for the vid. What are your thoughts on 10.5’s vs 12.5’s. In a tire?

I prefer a wide tire but it depends on if you can make them fit 👍
