Wheel of Time show vs book: all the differences (Episode 3)

Ойын-сауық

We are looking at episode three of the Amazon Prime show Wheel of Time and how it compares with the book, The Eye of the World by Robert Jordan. I’ll admit, after watching the show a billion times to get clips/edit this video, I started really looking back on it and loving it even more. Despite some of the choices I don’t like, I feel like they really nailed a lot of characters, locations, and plot points. I’m really liking the vibe and am excited for the rest of the season. How are you feeling about it?

As a book reader I’m struggling with how they add scenes to promote “strong women” character but then leave out scenes from the book which show how capable the female characters are. Nynaeve killing the trolloc being swapped for Egwene doing better in the Forrest then Perrin is a poor choice.

  • @Bookborn

YESS SAY IT LOUDER. I've been going on and on about this all day. They are trying to make decisions to make the women seem "more important and stronger" but are actually UNDERMINING the strength of the women in the books. They didn't need to be considered for being the dragon reborn (which doesn't make sense with Saiden/Saidar situation) because they were the most powerful channelers the Aes Sedai had seen in generations. Nynaeve doesn't need to kill a trolloc to be a freaking BOSS time and time again when she lets literally *nobody* walk over her and her Two Rivers folk. Egwene doesn't need to be Ta'avern, she gets crap done on her own.

They also downplay men a lot for example in episode 1 Moirraine of all people says the men who sealed the Dark One were arrogant fools even though in the book they are portrayed as tragic heroes. Now if a Red Sister said it would make more sense given that many of them hate men.

I read the books starting… 30 years ago omg I’m old! I love your videos because there is a lot of stuff where I’m like “that’s changed right?” and glad I can come here to see if it’s just my bad memory or not. The wife and I have both read the series and are enjoying the show after the first three episodes. Events may be slightly different but the spirit of what we wanted to see is there. Really looking forward to the next episodes and then popping in here to find out what I forgot. Last I love the way you talk about things that haven’t happened yet so as not to spoil anyone who doesn’t already know. Is a great approach to see.

In this day and age of "muh grittiness" there is a troubling habit of taking characters who are established as joyous, kindhearted, honorable and lively....and turning them into something depressing in order to "sUbEvRt ExPeCtAtIoNs". It's like the screenwriters couldn't appreciate the joy a Gleeman brings to an isolated place. I'm not thrilled with how the show is treating Lan either.

non-book here as well. i found ep1 a little slow and some of the dialogue kinda going nowhere? the crazy trolloc battle and moiraine's sorcery suddenly snapped everything back tho. as the show went along, it had these slow parts mixed with some iconic scenes, but the dialogue always feels a bit unnatural for me. like they're forcing bits of info here and there, and none of the interactions that the 4 youngsters had seemed to match what they're just experiencing... the trauma of being attacked by crazy creatures and being told they have to be on the run with some mysterious witch-lady. they've been on the run for days if not weeks by now, and they still haven't gotten any details about where they're going and why? what's moiraine been doing all this time? anyway, it's still a fun watch. definitely better than netflix's Cursed, which felt way more aimless. but i'd say some of this journeying could very easily stray into that territory of seeming aimless for non-book viewers, if they skip too much worldbuilding and mess up character introductions.

I also hate the new Thom. Every time one of these new series comes out - a discovery of witches, the new werewolf story with Sarah Michelle Gellar - I think of Buffy. Hate Whedon all you want but Buffy and Angel managed to do dark and light. You could understand why these people not only loved each other but liked being around each other. Maybe those shows weren't as dark as the new ones but they were fun. Characters had fun. They were funny. Why do none of the new shows know how to inject fun? Well some do - Doctor Who. A discovery of witches I think had whole episodes where no one smiled. What was my original point? Thom is funny. Mat is funny. Birgitta is funny. Where is the fun? And not the kind that kills characters and character relationships --Dandelion in the Witcher for example. He is one of Geralt's favorite people in the world. Geralt would do anything for him. They are good friends. Shock and awe is good but I want the fun too.

I've given it a couple of days, and I'm at peace with the changes, mostly. I feel they were made due to budget/time constraints, the fact that they aged the Emond's Field characters (which I like), and to kind of condense scenes in the books. I'm seeing many of the things in first season so far being true to the spirit of the series if not scene for scene for Eye of the World. There are some cuts which hurt more than others, and changes with which I'm undecided, but overall I enjoyed the episodes we've gotten so far, and am excited for the rest of the season. I was pleasantly surprised at some of the scenes that were added that aren't in the books. The attack of Winter's Night, and seeing the Whitecloaks with the captured Aes Sedai for instance. Fans just have to remember that this won't be exactly the same as the books, and that's okay. As so many have said, we have to think of this as a new turning of the wheel. Similar, but different. As long as it stays true to the spirit of the series I'll be happy with it.

I used to be more... picky... about changing things from the books before putting them on screen... But over time I've learned that on-screen adaptations have some restrictions that books don't have to worry about. On the other hand, there are certain advantages that on-screen mediums have over books. Whenever a book gets an on-screen adaptation, it is certainly reasonable for book fans to be hyper critical... But I've also found that adaptations aren't bad simply because they have differences with the book (and, in a very few cases, some of the adaptations are significant improvements over their source material). Couple reasons that I think lead to an adaptation being bad are when the adaption creates holes in it's plot, or when the adaptation changes the original author's message and intent behind the story. And I think the TV show is doing a pretty good job so far as to being an adaptation. Also, I agree with the thought that the show is doing a better job at presenting the romantic relationships. For me, Nynaeve and Lan are two of my favorite characters in the books, but it really bothered me that I didn't understand where their romantic interest in each other came from, and I just had to accept that their romantic subplot just had a start that I totally missed. But in show? Oh man, I am appreciating the interactions between Lan and Nynaeve so far. And I'm also curious how the show is going to handle Perrin's character (Perrin probably being my personal favorite). I did a double-take in the show's scene where Perrin's pregnant wife is introduced, and in my head I was like "wait, if Perrin has a wife and child, why the heck would he leave Emond's Field? Something is suspect, and someone is probably going to die." But then he's the one who accidentally kills her, and that wasn't what I was expecting. ... And then Matt tries to console Perrin by giving him a dagger she made. And then Egwene tries to console Perrin by saying, 'It's not your fault she died.' It's hitting me a little hard. And that feeling when someone tries to comfort you by saying it's not your fault, while you in your own head know that it's your fault... Man... Yeah, I dunno. I definitely find some things strange, and there are a few scenes that I really want to nitpick, but I haven't found anything that I openly hate yet. I'm actually anxious for the next episode because I think I like this show.

I believe that they gave Perrin a wife because they needed to show how he has to always be careful due to his size. Ever since he was young, he took extra care around others due to being bigger and stronger than everyone. Having him have a wife then kill her in that way really condenses that plot line. Plus it will continue to add to the further plots of the “changes” that he will go through.

The reason they cut characters like Bayle Domon in TV shows is because it's hard to engage actors for small roles that would just appear less than once in a season. Imagine someone hiring you to shoot a 10 minute long scene, and telling you that they may need you for another 10 minutes in two years if the show is still running. So they either remove them completely, or compress their roles, so that it could be carried over with just one short time appearance.

First about Thom, he's been onscreen for all of seven minutes so far, and with the way the episode ended, I don't think his personality will end up being that far off, but I guess we'll have to see. Moving back to the Whitecloak scene that didn't happen in the book, seeing this scene puts to rest the Perrin being married and killing his wife for me. That group of Whitecloaks is led by Geofram Bornhald. After the encounter, they go west, Eamon Valda, who I don't ever recall being mentioned as a questioner but is here, and the questioners go south, and the party goes east. How is the equivalent Perrin scene showing his rage/beastiality and killing a person from the book supposed to happen? The Whitecloaks aren't going to be where they need to be, unless we run into yet another group of them running around Andor. Plus I don't know that I would have wanted to wait until episode 4 or 5 before we start to get some better depth on Perrin's character. So while I'm still on the fence with the whole fridging trope usage, I get relocating the overall event to episode 1 so that things farther down the line in the whole travel sequence can be shortened down for the show, and we get some better insight into Perrin from the get go.

Well reasoned! I still wish they went with someone else for Perrin to kill...maybe even his mentor (which would suck but avoid fridging). I also felt cinematically these first three episodes intentionally added scenes to feel more like lord of the rings fellowship movie. The ferry scene, going into shadar logoth( Moria), the lore about shadar logoth is reminisce of the betrayal of the ghost that can’t rest in the mountain of Lotr ( cursed). I feel they created a lot of similar concepts for the show because it worked for lotr.

A few things pissed me off like Matt's parents becoming bad parents, the characters using real-world curses instead of randland curses, but I'm still optimistic. And yeah, when I saw Thom's face with no dropping mustaches I was also disappointed. I just hope the writers have thought through the implications of the changes they've made. Changing Matt's parents changes the whole moral character of the Two Rivers - because the town allows their bad behavior. Burning an Aes Sedai alive without her being blindfolded changes the rules of channeling, because she should be able to free herself. And the dark friend in episode 3 doesn't talk about the dark one's promise of immortality, but about his desire to break the wheel. Which means it'll be harder to justify how widespread dark friends are in this world.

I enjoy your content and vantage balancing both perspectives as a fan/reader of the books and watching the Amazon mini-series. I never read any Tolkien growing up and my introduction to fantasy was the WoT by a work colleague. I can recall a verbal outburst when the trollocs attacked the Al'Thor farm. It was shame that scene wasn't realized on the silver screen as portrayed in the books. The relationship and the revelations of the conversation between Rand and his father trying to get to the village after the attack is foundational the rest of the story, but for obvious reasons they were not able to include any of that. I am also not a fan of the 'adult' take Amazon has chosen to employ here. While I accept Amazon at its core is a business and sees the marketing valuing of appealing to as wide a fan base as possible, one of the off putting elements to GoT for example was the graphic sexual nature, yet WoT was much more pure and adolescent, without being childish like the Hobbit was. While I suppose implied or at least reasoned by the reader, intimate male and female relationships between Warders and Aes Sedai were not a topic of defining who they are and how they needed to respond to the world. It is also disappointing the need to represent different sexual appetites too as this was not an element of any prominence in the WoT. I don't feel it needed to be in Amazon's version either, if the intent was to portray the story and hold true to the values and ideas told by Robert Jordan - but that's Hollywood and the industry as a whole; impossible to separate entertainment from politics. The protestations of some 'book fans' complaining about the TV series seems ill placed. The books are not written as a screenplay and by Robert Jordan's own admission were not suitable for the silver screen. So why the vitriol? Doesn't make sense. Overall I think Amazon have done a wonderful job creating the world of Robert Jordan and have adapted the story moderately well - the notable exceptions being the sexual politics, story arch intended to create mystery which only serves to annoy book fans and how to value the power of women other than at the expense of lesser men. Cast and writing are very well done. Moiraine, Egwene and Nynaeve are great women characters to get behind. Matt so far is the most engaging male Edmonds 5. I agree that the Thom in the book is - at least to this point - far more likeable than the TV one, yet there is an undeniable draw to the TV iteration that is compelling and captivating. Lan is disappointing though. It is refreshing to have a story that portrays powerful, capable women, with the story line centred around their control and vision. What is a let down though is they have to belittle and manipulate men to achieve that - ultimately that is not flattering. Robert Jordan's main theme throughout WoT and essential to its ending is the harmony and balance that unites the male and female aspects of life. Different yet equally important and one without the other can not achieve the best outcome. Up to episode 4 female dominance comes at the expense of male failure.

  • @Bookborn

I completely agree that we have an issue with the success of Game of Thrones. Now *everything* seems to have to match it in tone or "it won't be successful". I personally never watched GOT because I just don't enjoy that sort of graphic stuff, not my thing. So, it increasingly makes me nervous that that is the precedent set for something to be successful. And like...I don't know. It may be true. It may be that the general populace isn't interested in fantasy unless it's an extreme, dark, sexualized version. That would make me sad, and I hope it's not true, but I do think some show runners think it is. "female dominance comes at the expense of male failure" is something I see a lot in media. Now, don't get me wrong, I care a LOT about how women are portrayed in media and have talked about it extensively on my channel. Most people call me a raging feminist 🤷‍♀️ But this new trend, which you nailed with your quote, is just annoying. That's not what women want in our portrayals! Women don't need men to be weak for women to be strong. It's something that happens a lot, and it's lazy feminism, it's lazy good-character writing. (The best example I saw this in is the comparison between the movies Wonder Woman and Captain Marvel. In WW, men and women both succeeded at what they were good at. Diana being strong didn't negate other's strengths. In CM, every man had to be an oppressor or incompetent to showcase Captain Marvel. That...isn't what a strong female character is.) That being said, I don't feel like i've seen it too much in this show yet. Rand, Mat, and Perrin have all been shown to be strong, as well as Lan.

@@Bookborn Well said, I accept that many in the world connect to stories with the flavour of violence and sex, and it is clearly marketable; Wheel of Time didn't connect to its audience using or relying on those tones. Not that those things didn't transpire in the books, the engagement to the story wasn't that platform and that's what I hope the show runners haven't exploited to gain a greater audience. Imagine if (the made up for film) Tauriel and Kili did the nasty on screen during one of the Hobbit films - just wouldn't fit the tone of what the story was about. But that was an acceptable example of taking literary license and promoting an element of romance to increase audience capture, even if it never existed in the canon of book writing. Amazon though are trying to skirt the 'mature' audience, much like the compulsory Warder butt scene. Same relationship would have been accomplished if they were already both in the bath. And Rand and Egwene bit - just not the tone I hope the show continues to expand upon. The Aes Sedai are dynamic, capable and powerful women - well most in the books are. What I struggle with is in this modern world, if we are going to justify mature themes that weren't forefront in the books using the reason that this is the way the world today connects with things, then make an effort to showcase women like many dynamic women are today. A stupid, weak or cowardly man doesn't by de facto make a women strong or better. Because I don't want to be a hypocrite and only offer criticism without a solution or idea...how about when Nynaeve is creating the poultice for Moiraine and Lan is watching, she could for example, teach/demonstrate what she was doing and why, and share her experience and capability of a skill she has acquired. Instead all she communicated was "this will hurt"...dumb dumb man not able to understand.... Rand, Matt and Perrin have been great, but I think this has mostly been to their skills as actors rather than how the story is developing with them. Matt is the only character at the moment with any identity. I get the purpose behind Rand being bland at the moment, but surely if the shows intent is to keep the audience guessing, isn't there going to be a massive backlash once the real Dragon Reborn is revealed? Will this not create a wave of sexism criticism all over? This element and the pacing are the two main issues they have to start getting right. The balance and harmony between female and male, and how ultimately they complement each other. And the sheer amount of detail in the books. Trying to take license and present slightly different versions of story arch's than the books (some of which is necessary) if not done correctly may be problematic later. I really enjoy the show though having said that. keep up the great work with your videos!

I've said in a few other videos and threads, I think reserving judgement is the best idea, need to at least have the full s1 to understand and rate, both extremes of praising everything or hating everything are wrong. And the Boy or a Girl, cause that simply destroys the lore of Saidin and Saidar, to the point of it being more than a different turn but a different world. It's 2 huge ones in my mind that most people seem to ignore. But let's give the benefit of the doubt and follow along, like Mat so eloquently said in episode 2 "Don't be an ass" lets all wait and see and hopefully we all will end up buying the changes and loving it.

It's been awhile since I read the books and this is a great refresher on it! Thom is a huge change that I am surprised about. I am interested to see how he is with Moraine when they meet up later. We need to see more for me to say if the change is working for how he fits in the show. Overall I like the changes, they can't faithfully adapt every detail from the whole series so changing things to streamline it makes sense. I think they are also hinting at how a woman channeling too much of the power can be a danger like in the story Moraine was telling, so they could spin it that way to say the Dragon reborn as a woman could be a danger and give more importance to the women as possibilities as the Dragon reborn. I think it has a good start and am looking forward to more

I could be wrong but i think they gave perrin the conflict with killing his wife so that he had reason to be more cautious about decisions. Perrin was always slow to act, thought deeply and was a gentle giant. fearful his blacksmiths hands could do unintentional damage. As we dont have the same amount of time with the characters and have lost the internal monologue, this change will give that character trait more weight for those non book readers. So yeah the show went with the trope of using a female characters death to develop the male character but i think it works... Also I think his wife was a darkfriend. She had a sadness and you could argue that this is because of the guilt she felt for betraying him / the village knowing the trollocs were coming... Also, she appeared to be attacking perrin with the hammer. but it was left vague enough to go either way - however the nail in the coffin for me was the wolf dream... the wolves protect Perrin in the dream world and having the wolf (Hopper) do what its doing could be seen as the first step in protecting perrin from his dreams/ guilt and in a way opens it up for Perrin to be able to forgive himself for what he done... maybe

I'm not entirely bought into the darkfriend theory, but I do see how people are leaning that way. Perrin's does have an event similar to that in the books - all they did was move it to episode 1, and further scenes show that how the event played out in the books can't happen at this point without changing characters around because they won't be in the right spot geographically (i.e. Geofram Bornhald).

BookBorn: MAJOR SPOILER ALERT: You wondered about the foretelling of the door scene. I'll try to be vague to protect the uninitiated. Here's the hint. It looked to me that in the episode where they are traveling Moraine gave the horses healing and energy, but she didn't give it to all of the horses... the last horse she walks way from without sustaining it. The book mentions this too. All of the story architecture is in place. This particular archetype is the least fleshed out compared to the other archetypes. But it's there.

So far almost all the changes seem unnecessary, and don’t make a ton of sense to me. I’ll keep watching, and hopefully it gets better, but at the moment I’m pretty disappointed. Yeah, it's not the approach I envisioned either, but looking at it big picture, it's making sense to me. First off, the showrunner did say they are trying to keep the identity of the Dragon Reborn hidden as long as possible for non-book readers to keep them guessing, hence the "boy or girl" references and lots of missing clues that by this point in the story have basically all but outright confirmed who the Dragon Reborn is. I don't find it that important to know who it is right from the beginning, and it looks like the end of ep.3 might be starting the dropping of subtle hints. From the beginning in the book to where they introduced Thom in the show, did he really contribute that much? Not really. His role really developed once the party split up, and so now he's there. Baerlon and Min missing makes sense when you don't want the clues as to who the DR is too early. Nothing else really important happened there, and Min can pop up elsewhere and still contribute exactly what her character is supposed to. Perrin's little episode happens in book 1 to someone else in a different location, so I'm not too upset about that. Mat's changes are sitting too well with me at the moment, but we've got a long way to go, and I've mostly forgotten it by now. The opening scene of ep 1, iirc, is slightly mentioned later in book 1, and then referred to again in book 4. With the way it happened, it may have fit into the prequel trilogy that New Spring was supposed to be part of. Chronologically it makes sense. Maybe RJ had left some notes detailing the characters other than the male being chased that were in the scene, but I think it was plausible artistic license. I won't spoil it for you though.

They replace the lightning scene in the books with Rand knocking down a door (hilarious), this is the Dragon Reborn, meanwhile, to put this into perspective in later episodes we have Nynaeve being able to hold off Manchin Shin, performing mass healing and linked with Egwene (and a couple of Aes Sedai), taking on the entire Trolloc horde at Tarwins Gap! Anyway, back to this episode. Rand and Matt, being the big 6+ foot men they are, run away from a smaller female barmaid! and this is the scene they choose to depict the many pages of the two getting harassed by darkfriends on their way to Caemlyn (white tower in this show). This was the scene they went with, and it's not ridiculous or stupid (Bookborn didn't seem to have any issue with it, because you know girl power! I will say Not Tom, was one of the few male characters that does anything useful in the show and isn't stupid or cowardice. Bookborn sees no problem with this adaptation, because hey when a man kills his own wife and is over her in less than a week, well nothing more I can say really

i think every (or nearly) book fan who is angered by this show understands they will never see a 1:1 perfect portrayal. that said, there are things that are understandable changes ie: condensing story to fit time, casting (especially hard to get a huge number of main characters to be similar enough to pass as menetherin bloodline) choices, altering non-relevant (or mildly relevant) plotpoints to fit timeline/pacing of a broadcast show. things that are not, ever understandable are rewriting major history of the source, inserting characters that never existed, major changes to source that are completely unnecessary. just look at what they did to the show Titans.. its about the same as far as loyalty to the source material.

Honestly, I never wanted a one for one translation. But the fact is, this could have been WAY better and didn't require all the cuts and changes they've been making. We know this because there's been a previous example of this being done right: Game of Thrones. (At least until the final seasons.) A Song of Ice and Fire is a sprawling epic across continents. And yet somehow, Seasons 1-4 (and maybe 5-6) of Game of Thrones were REALLY well done. And they weren't a carbon copy; changes were made, but all while maintaining the heart of the story, etc. Somehow, Benioff and Weiss pulled off several seasons of arguably great adaptation while maintaining the heart of the settings, characters, and narrative of the source material. So considering Judkins had Amazon money and supposedly had a crazy budget, there's no excuse. **Unless he was misrepresenting his limitations, which I consider likely.**

As someone who's read only a part of book 1 (I stopped when they arrived at Shadar Logoth), I gotta say I'm loving the show. I stopped at that point in the first book because I was tired of characters being bland, so the character treatment in the tv show is so up my alley. Again, I don't know what's going to happen, but I liked the things done to Matt and Perrin, I think it made their characters more flashed out from the beginning. I don't know how it fits/doesn't fit with the future events of the book, but so far, I'm liking it (other than the fact that a female character had to die to give some depth to a male character). I was a bit on the fence in the first episode, it felt a bit clunky and awkward at times, but, in my opinion, it just keeps getting better and better.

The characters get way more fleshed out later in the series in a way I really like. The show removes the need for the characters to grow up, which I don't LOVE because it leads to less character growth, but I completely understand the decision and figure it'll be more popular with audiences. I think Mat's the only one that's really changed his personality. He needs more light-heartedness.

  • @davidb6900

I get most of the changes. The reason it took so long to get this show is because the book isn’t a good direct translation to screen. And I started feeling pretty good after episode 3. Mat is my favorite character by far, and I like that he has gotten some good burn before the change happens unlike in the books. BUT, then I watched the animated short and they did the story of Jearom and the farmer with the quarterstaff…and now I’m super worried they are going to cut one of the most iconic scenes of the entire series! There are just so many changes that I worry how large of a change to one of the main characters they are willing to make. The excitement gets mixed with dread as I worry they are going to screw something up lol.

The pacing in some of these episodes seems too fast. I think the time in the two rivers should have stretched more. I'm a bit concerned the pacing isn't allowing proper character development for people who haven't read any of WoT. I would have liked Thom to have been introduced in the Two Rivers. I didn't like the "four" Ta'veren or Perrin's wife or beard changes. I would have liked the male actors to look a bit younger and Nynaeve to be a little bit older. Like i'm feeling as if the plot is going to need Mat to connect to Thom and as a result, with the Mat backstory choices they made, this more shifty Thom was required. We'll see but I think the actor is nailing his part either way. Ummmmmmmmmmm Layla i'm on the is a DF train, I think that would explain a whole heap of stuff.
