This color educational film, one in a series entitled "Wheat - The Staff of Life" is about the milling of wheat. It was apparently made by the General Mills, Inc. corporation. Copyright is 1947. Directed by Rand Kellogg and Frederick R. Jones, the film was released by Simmel-Meservey.
Opening: WHEAT---THE STAFF OF LIFE (:07-:33). Title: The Milling of Wheat. A huge wheat processing facility, the General Mills factory in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Samples of wheat are ground in a small mill. Germ, bran, and starch are separated. Flour is tested by a technician. The protein in wheat, or gluten, is tested,. Sample loaves of bread are made. A baker makes dough. He puts it into an oven. Finished bread is cut in half (:34-2:43). Grain goes through the mill. Wheat goes through a separator. Wheat seeds are screened out. The wheat loses its rough impurities in a mill separator (2:44-4:15). Wheat flows, without seeds, in an aspirator. A row of magnets pick up pieces of metal, including nails, that accidentally fall into the wheat. Air blows wheat over vibrating screens. A worker walks by. Tempering is when the bran layer is toughed with steam. The machine is shown. Tempered bran. Machine moves (4:16-6:01). A man checks a mill machine. Wheat flows down through steel rollers, freeing starch from germ and bran. The effects of the first break is held in a man's hand. Bolting claws help separate. A man looks over a machine (6:02-7:20). Purifying the flour is next. Air passes up through a purifier to help separate bran and dust. Vibrating screens sift the flour. Flour of different grades. Air blower furnish power to carry off bran dust. Reduction rolls are meant to make the flour very fine. A man checks the flour by hand. He opens a machine, flour falls. Gold Medal Flour is weighed and packaged in bags from a machine. Gold Medal Flour is bagged and goes down the assembly line. Bags are sealed and tipped (7:21-10:06). Flour bags fall down a chute onto a belt. Flour bags come down the belt, men grab them and load a railroad car. A train with its cars on the tracks(10:07-10:58). End credits (10:59-11:03).

    I find it amusing that one of the producer-directors of this film- Rand Kellogg- worked on a film promoting their cereal rival *GENERAL MILLS!*

    Few things of life are as fragrant as delicious as a thick slice of home baked fresh bread topped with butter. Real good back in the day and now.

    I lived in Europe for two years in high school. I was amazed at how good the bread was. I don’t know if the difference was due to this, but some investigation showed that in Europe, they didn’t process the wheat like in this film. They still ground the germ, bran, and starch all together. The bread was so good that I usually bought two loaves at the bakery because I knew I was going to eat most of one on the walk home. The stuff was like crack. I have tried to find bread like that in the USA, but have never been successful. I have heard about wheat classified as “ancient”, but haven’t tried it.

    Incredible. Such innovation. Back then it was really cheap to purchase. Today it is relatively cheap but look out! Wheat will not be available this fall. Stock up! Wheat will be a luxury soon.

    As of the time of this coment Memorial day 2022 we have a world supply of 10 months of wheat! think about that.

    Oh geez.......and to think where our supplies of Twinkies would go....Oh, Wait! Do they contain wheat? Not sure. I'll miss triscuits though.

    Europeans are upset that the Ukraine war will cause wheat shortages, but it has always been bad for health. As soon as the domestication of wheat happened, people's bones became thinner, and they became shorter and had--for the first time in human history--lots of cavities. Starch in general tends to make you fatter, and there is no such thing as an essential carbohydrate. Do yourself a favor and make animal foods the staff of life: meat, fish, dairy and eggs. Plant foods are fine for condiments, or as survival foods.

    It's a fine message, but your timing is a bit off. 😁We're going to be facing dire food shortages across the globe due to supply issues in the bread basket known as Ukraine. In the more destitute regions of the world, there WILL be many who die of starvation in the coming years. in 2022, I'm just thankful i live in the west where we have the ability and the resources to purchase wheat and various grains. We can afford to avoid wheat here if we choose. In other areas...it's going to be essential. starving people would be happy to eat shoe leather at some point. 😐 Hows your 21st century going? it's not what I expected.

    😐"We don't do thangs in moderation round these here parts, do we paw?" I've never run across stomach problems or brain fog, but yes... With what we know these days, I treat breads as if they were little more than sugars. I nice treat once in a while, but easy does it. There are some days where i miss the old classic "food pyramid" though. 😁Remember all those grains and carbs and sugars at the bottom? That's part of a balanced breakfast and found in your grocers freezer, where _ALL_ fine food products are sold!

    Not really. Whole wheat and its derivative products are healthy and beneficial to our bodies as we, being omnivores crave. Unfortunately some of us do not tolerate wheat well; no need to malign it for the rest of us.
