What causes it though, is it artificially held by the ECU? I'd have guessed heavy flywheel, given its so slow to rev upwards too. But I don't know anything about the z!

@@rossturnure1816 its not the new exhaust that's causing the rev hanging, it was there before the new exhaust in case you couldn't hear it, but its put into the ECU by the manufacturers to meat EPA guidelines. for all the ECU knows, nothing has happened to the exhaust, or the body, or the suspension

it would be easier to stall which is why its so heavy from factory. The more mass in the flywheel the harder it is to stall, but it revs slower

The rev issue is most likely due to the weight of the flywheel. Manufacturers usually put heavier flywheels in manual cars so that you are less likely to stall the car. Because the flywheel weighs more it has more inertia and takes longer to slow down.

Rev hang might be related to emission but is also programmed to make shifting easier for daily slow acceleration. If the revs drop too fast on slow shifting, you might need to "rev match" on up shifts. Not everyone is banging gears like a rockstar in stop and go traffic

@stradman it's called rev hang. A lot of newer cars are forced to do it for emissions so they burn the excess fuel when you let off and meet epa standards. It's very common among manual japanese cars. It can sometimes be removed by a tuner

James, you need lower downpipes on the VR30 platform to really open up the exhaust! There's four catalytic converters and removing the factory lower downpipes takes out two of the cats and opens up the exhaust note.

As a former q50 3.0 redsport owner be careful with tunes, you have to use very good gas cause they like to blow up and the turbos like to go

“Rev Hang”. My old WRX did it as well. The revs take longer to drop back down. I used a COBB tuner which hooks up to the OBD2 port. It eliminates the rev hang

The new Z has a crazy heavy flywheel to make it easier to drive and not stall for newer manual drivers. There are a few videos of guys who’ve swapped lighter flywheels in and the rev hang disappears mostly. But too light of a flywheel and it’ll stall as the revs drop.

There is a few reasons why the revs are hanging. As many people are saying it could be ecu tune or heavy flywheel. These are both probably true. I would not recommend a lighter flywheel as some are mentioning. On a boosted car one typically wants a heavier flywheel allowing revs to hang a little to help keep one in optimal boost range. The other reason one may not want to jump to putting in a lightweight flywheel is torsional vibrations on the crank. a heavier flywheel can help keep your engine from lingering in rpm ranges where resonance frequencies are at their worst.

At 8:57 your check engine light cane on after you floored it might need to get that checked lol

The nissan z has always had an issue with rev hang. A lighter flywheel always seems to help. Also opening up that exhaust (headers, cat delete) seems to help as well. The bov also can be upgraded for less hang (and better sound)

Hey James! I believe it’s the flywheel to blame for the rev dropping down so slow. I’m not sure if a sport or race flywheel would make a difference as I’m not sure what’s in there at the moment. Hope that helps

Nissan Tech here, and I can confirm, the rev hang/RPM limit is due to the Electronic Throttle, for emissions purposes. The car doesnt let you rev up all the way in Neutral, the ECM will limit the throttle opening past a certain point, prevent excess emissions coming out of the tailpipe, as well as hang the RPM to help burn off the fuel that didnt finish in the combustion process. Thats why the car doesnt do that in gear, as its expecting you to drive the vehicle Like others have said, a tuner should be able to eliminate that- but if you are in an emissions state that **might** not pass emissions testing

The Nissan Z has an idle control valve in it the prevent the revs from dropping quickly. It works with the ECU to make sure it can anticipate the shifts and this is necessary for the rev match feature. This can be fixed with a tune however.

You need a cold air for that Z I think that would really give the exhaust some extra good sound and if not the turbo a cold air at least

I might go as far as to say, it might have been tuned that way to give you instant power when you shift into higher gears but it's generally about tune

I like how he said “this guy spent 5 figures on a exhaust” I’m 16 and can’t even afford to fix my jeep cause I come from a really poor family and I spent all the money I had on it and broke it within 4 months

Dear Stradman.. The engine idling down slowly is called rev hang. I tune will eliminate that issue. Get a intake. Not sure the set up, but a long tube intake preferably.. you’ll get all the turbo sounds up front. I drive a Subaru 12 STI hatchback. Ovb completely different platforms but Japan turbo cars non the less. Cheers brother

Lighter flywheel will do little or nothing if the intake vacuum reduces slowly. Probably drive-by-wire is slowing down throttle closure. Switch to mechanical cable throttle.

Slow rev drop is likely due to heavy flywheel. Throw on a triple disc clutch with a lightweight flywheel, should help out a bunch.

@jwalster9412 Yes, it can. The weight of the flywheel helps when slipping the clutch on launch. However, going with a triple disc will help mitigate that some. Also, if he chooses organic instead of ceremaic pads.

The rev hang thing is because you probably have a heavy flywheel, the exhaust may sound A LOT better (and turbo noise) with some aftermarket downpipes for the turbos, also wouldn't hurt to add sport cats as well..

The Aventador being parked next to the Revuelto just highlights how much better looking the Aventador is

I completely agree, the Aventador is an all time great looking car and the Revuelto doesn't come close for me. I'm excited for James because loves the Reveulto but it doesn't so anything for me.

If you want to hear turbo noises swap out the stock intake for a aftermarket "cold air" intake. The factory air boxes can really hide a lot of intake/turbo noise. Its a cheap and easy mod

The rev hang is very good for sports driving - it prevents the revs go too low between the shifts so you loose the optimal power range. It's an advantage for sports driving not a downside and eliminates the need for slightly hitting the gas pedal between shifts when driving on track.

My 2019 370z with a full motordyne exhaust and art pipes did the same thing with the reving. It also did it with the stock exhaust. Whenever I got the Ecutek tune it helped a bit.

The flywheel is probably why the revs don’t drop fast. It depends what you want, a heavier flywheel is nicer for drifting/tracking it (with stock motor) because when coming out of a corner the revs are still high. With more power the revs dropping won’t be a problem because they will climb fast with downshift or a clutch kick

I have a Q60 Redsport with the same motor and my rev hang improved a ton after I put HKS BLOWOFF VALVES and they sound great. Good luck

Reason takes so much for the revs to drop its probably due to a heavy flywheel. Generally used to make the car more drivable than a lightweight version. Retains momentum in driving better. There also might be something in turn with throttle as well

It's called Rev Hang. It happens when the flywheel is unnecessarily heavy. If you put a light weight flywheel in it you'll see it be way more 'responsive' (revs drop fast). Don't go 'too' light of a flywheel or you'll get gear chatter at high rpm (not dangerous just annoying to listen to). Usually a 25% reduction is ideal.

Hit the rev matching button by the shifter should fix the hanging revs

possibly a balancer on the fly wheel i think or something like that, the focus ST has one on and can be removed

Get a tune on the z! It's a mix of the tune holding the rpm up, and the weight of the flywheel.

id say that is is most likely to keep up the boost on the turbos to prevent to much tubo-lag. but i dont know. or its just to heavy of a flywheel. Manufacturers like to put heavier flywheels in manual cars so that it´s harder to stall the car.

Most likely the flywheel on the nissan Z is a dual mass and that contributes to that slow decel, Swap to a single mass lightweight and wont completely solve it but will improve a lot. My 2012 3.7 mustang was slow in decel too and after going lightweight flywheel it decels very quick now.

Strad I just picked up a manual 2023 Supra 3.0 premium and it is amazing I absolutely love the car so much it’s so much fun even without ripping it Would love to see a manual Supra on the channel one day

Ok this is maybe far fetched but… the Z have rev matching set right ,so you can down a gear or 2 and be on the right revs to let the clutch go flawlessly , it’s sounds like the rev match setting is acting even when the car is on neutral, that is why go down slow , trying to find on what revs you are going to set the car on gear, that need to be recalibrated on the ECU
