WHATS IN THE BOX? VINTAGE SOVIET ERA 1980'S; MIR MODELS 1/72, GRUMMAN F6F HELLCAT. KIT REVIEW No. 86

Ойын-сауық

I hope you enjoy this video. This is my eighty SIXTH "WHATS IN THE BOX" kit review and I hope to be completing this model when i have the necessary skills to do it the justice it deserves in a bout 10 years time. I have a model collection/stash of 33-40 1/72 Spitfires which i am currently building badly for the amusement or to the annoyance of my fellow KZreadrs, As my competence levels are not sufficient to complete this model it will be held in reserve for when i deem the time is right. If you would like to see the of 33 Spitfires there is a link to my collection below. As a novice modeller my intention is to learn the various assembly techniques and skills required, especially that of painting, so as i can produce half decent looking models, I concluded the best way to do this is to start with something simple, personally i think the best way to learn a new skill is repetition; try, try and try again. Hopefully by completing these 33 Spitfire models i will learn a few tricks of the trade. Whilst doing this I am also hoping to improve my VERY basic KZread skills, so far just uploading these videos has resulted in tantrums of titanic proportions, yes unfortunately i am also techno-phobic.
Follow me on my novice modelling journey whilst I try desperately to overcome my midlife crisis. Questions and suggestions always welcome. Please like and subscribe and follow me on my ride!

Thanks for the review of this Soviet era release of a FROG mold. I am fascinated with how kits were produced around the world back in the day. When you can see how the same kit was issued by different countries you get really see the differences. I built the Original FROG kit back in the 70s. My first FROG kit as a kid. I had built several Airfix kits by that time and found the FROG kit to be a nicer representation. I really enjoyed the FAA colour scheme as well. I recently acquired another one of them and will be featuring it on my channel in the near future. Keep up the great work!!

Hello there @CelebratingVintageModelKits and thanks for watching, I see i am conversing with a fellow novice KZreadr, congrats you have a very nice looking channel. I developed my interest in these vintage kits by accident a few months ago when i assembled a collection of 40ish 1/72 spitfires. I having built a few of my vintage kits i do find they provide an interesting alternative to the hyper accurate modern kits, as a novice builder i actually feel less pressured when building them, as they kind of match my limitations LOL. Good luck with your channel! Perhaps we should exchange production notes at some point, I am currently finding the whole KZread journey quite enjoyable hope you continue to enjoy yours regards andy be seeing you.

This is the old FROG F6F-3 kit. Not bad in overall outline, but as you've discovered, quite rough around the edges. I believe Novo purchased the moulds after FROG went out of business, so it's not a Russian kit. The seat looks remarkably detailed in comparison with the L-shaped slab of plastic you usually get with FROG offerings. Still, quite a good beginner's item with fond childhood memories. Just get yourself another cheap Hellcat to obtain decals-Eduard do a really nice one but the Academy or Hasegawa ones would be cheaper options.

hi Jeremy, was kind of planning on going down the acquire another hellcat with duplicate decals route, though as an alternative i have just got a pot of "The Army Painter, Warpaints; Kraken Skin" which is pretty much a dead match for the green, so i think i will be painting it as per the box. Regarding where this model comes from "Scalemates" agree that the Frog moulds went to Novo first, this Mir kit was produced after that, the address on the box is actually Minsk, so Belarus, so not Russia, but at the time The Soviet Union, USSR, CCCP was commonly referred to by most as well Russia, I referred to it as Soviet for most of the vid but slipped into the "lazy" Russia reference half way through LOL.

The U.S. Navy planes of WWII were either dark blue all over, or dark blue on the top surfaces and light blue on the underside surfaces. I built a balsa & tissue Hellcat, and the box art depicted the plane in the two-tone blue scheme.

Hi Andy. I must say you do like a challenge don't you. Some of these old kits do take some work to get them up to scratch but if your willing to put in the work sometimes it pays off. The important thing is does it have the key parts all there and is there any badly moulded parts. As long as the bones are good then it can be saved. This kit is no worse than some of the stuff that Revell were churning out in the 70's and 80's. This should be easy enough for someone with your skills by now. You,ve made the good kits ( Tamiya ) so now its time to get some more of the bad, remember that first Ventura Spitfire ? That weren't great but you learned from it. These old Frog kits were good in there day. I remember having an Me 262 by Frog in the 70's and I made a right pigs ear of it. But I am sure that you will knock this one out of the park by the time that you get round to it. The decals thing is a bit weird though, how did they expect you to finish the model ? You don't think that its an east west thing do you ? You know, We must not celebrate the decadent west and all that. Any I have seen worse kits and its a good video, so its not all bad. Mind you they did see you coming as you said on that Spitfire kit. FORTY QUID ! Damm. Good luck bud.

Probably tears, a pint of my own tears. Yes well the #40 Spit came from Latvia so half of that was the postage, i just had to have it for my Spit collection, though was unaware at the time that it was a Frog. am actually thinking of realsing the camo scheme as per the box are, choc-o-mint camo i shall call it, will look kind of interesting parked next to the standard grey/green/brown kits anyway LOL. Yes i did for a minute wonder whether not including decals was some sort of political statement, the communists were a weird bunch at times

Old mate the pilot looks like he has a serious case of 'roids but what an interesting kit. I've put together a couple of Russian kits and the new ones are surprisingly good particularly the kits from Svesda. When you look back at the kits that were available when we were kids some 50 or 60 years ago it show just how spoiled we are now with detail and moulding of kits. Flash was just par for the course back then.

i am note sure excessive is the correct choice of word for the amount of alcohol required, for the pursuit of intoxication by alcohol, as this would suggest that too much or an excess, amount of alcohol is actually possible; i therefore consider your suggestion to be an abstract theory, that quite frankly is as ridiculous as it is frightening. I am more than happy with your other two choices and if we can continue our conversations in future, along these lines, well i am sure we can become great friends.
