New Leaf was updated 4 years after. We may get one if we are still using the current Switches in another 2 years.

I wish they would just have a smaller team for basic item additions or just more tiny things to do. New leaf seems to have way more than new horizons.

As someone who isn't really into decorating I prefer new leaf. I love the island mini games and the villagers seemed more real. Even pocket camp villagers seem to have more personality than new horizons. I still like new horizons but it just feels like a fun vacation while new leaf feels more homey.

right that’s the ONLY thing lacking that the team could’ve done better. it feels like, for NH, they lost the influence and goal and mindset that eguchi had when making the first few AC games…

Yeah I've been looking into new leaf recently as I liked new horizons and realised that yeah there's more to it but you can barely customise anything. if you're not white then tough luck, go tanning on the beach for four real life hours if you want to look like yourself.

I miss the Pelican characters. I liked having an actual post office. And I miss running around doing errands for villagers.

I think the way to compare them is that New Leaf has more gameplay options, while New Horizons has more customization. So it comes down to what parts of Animal Crossing a person enjoys more.

Customization doesn't amount to shit when you get bored of it

new leaf was just so fun, i remember begging my parents to let me stay up so i could watch kk’s shows and i remember working at the roost and intentionally screwing up orders of people i didn’t like and the letter i sent welcoming poncho to my town he showed me 5 years later and crying because of resetti

ACNL just has so much more personality & heart to it! It’s a true AC game. NH is a great game for sure & is a massive improvement for graphics & design but was poorer in all the areas NL shined in! Same franchise, 2 very different games! ❤

its not, a true ac is all about arriving in a broken down town with a strange tom nook that builds houses and a town hall. well acnh has the arriving and tom nook, but wheres tom nooks house? Why dont i have a shop from the getgo? wheres the town hall?

I miss the island with all the minigames from new leaf! I feel like the multiplayer in new horizons is lacking 😖

I wish they'd implemented the island visiting from pocket camp. I don't want to coordinate with another person to visit their island. Just match make me with a random person so I can get my darn apples!

I like New Leaf more because it had more charm to it and felt like living in a town while New Horizons feels more like a diorama simulator, more decorating than actually being a member of the community.

I do! I like being able to put things outside… but the fishing tournaments and bug hunts are so much better in NL… and Capn’s island! I loved being able to take a vacation on a tropical island! I do like the crops and cooking in NH, but overall prefer NL!

New leaf has more personality New horizons has more of your OWN personality None of the villagers have any “personality” in new horizons but in new leaf the dialogue and conversations were a lot more interesting :,) I can go on about it but it really depends on what you enjoy the most

New Leaf for sure. Sure, it is my first Animal Crossing game, but it is just so much better than New Horizons. It felt more rewarding to pay off Public Work Projects and finally have something outside, where as NH, you can easily buy something and call it a day. And the Gold Tools... don't even get me started on what NH did...

New Leaf! I loved how Main Street was setup!

I love ACNL. Defenetely my favorite game of all time. Unfortunately people aren't so active anymore....

New Leaf was the first mainline Animal Crossing game I bought within the year it released. The music was calming, the player villager redesign was inspired, the animal villagers felt like they could exist in the real world and didn’t say the same dialogue line back to back. In my opinion, it was a more living, breathing world than what New Horizons gave us. That being said, I love New Horizons, I just happen to be very nostalgic. 😅

For me I find the NL graphics better…? Obviously NH is objectively better with it being HD. But NL colours are more true to the past titles. The grass is a darker green, everything is saturated, where as NH had less color?? If it makes sense

The music is what really made the games for me, so new leaf takes the cake. I do like new horizon’s clothes though, it’s way less tedious to make an outfit all at once.

Honestly, I feel like new leaf has a lot more events and gameplay, it focuses more on those kind of things rather than the designing side. But with new horizons, it’s mostly the other way round. With more decorative features and less events. I think I liked new leaf because there was a lot more of experience rather than just grinding loads for certain items. I also enjoyed the feature that you could get your hair done at Harriet’s but in new horizons you did it yourself. I would take the time each day to go to her shop and I also loved the fortune cookies in Timmy and Tommy’s shop. The post office was also really nice and I loved shrinks place too, he was one of my favourite Mocs aside from pascal and scallops are also my favourite animal. In new horizons, I feel like some things were changed to be easier and more accsessable but in new leaf I liked having to go to lots of different places and explore. We also have the mini games on tortimers island in new leaf, but in new horizons, it was only happy home paradise island we had. I also for some reason like the kind of cubic ds style games, just a little preference for me sometimes.

I think new leaf is better in almost every way. The only thing new horizons has over it is better graphics. I still like new horizons but when i bpught it i wanted an animal crossing game not a village design simulator. Where is the personality of the villagers, you know the heart of the series?

I remember when everyone in NL days would complain the dialogue wasn't as harsh or interesting as past games.. wild Nintendo never listened after 7 years

New leaf had far stronger writing, music and gameplay (especially when it comes to online multiplayer). It is in my opinion that it is the best animal crossing game, as it takes everything from the previous entries and fleshes them out beautifully. It released complete only receiving minor bug patches before one big update that added quite a few NEW features. As opposed to adding features all of the previous games had very slowly over the course of two years. I personally play way more new horizons but that is because I love decorating, if you don’t absolutely love decorating it is a far worse game in every way except visuals.

I hope the next animal crossing isn't on an island, it was fun for this one to be different but I miss the Og style tbh and I hope we can go back to something like thst (especially with the train station at the back)

I really enjoy ACNH and I don't think New Leaf will get this high in my love... but I really enjoy it from time to time

I love both games, new horizions for the decoration and all of that, new leaf for the tiny nostalgia that I have from like 2019 or 2020

New leaf

i like new leaf, you can actually be mayor, and in new horizons, your more of a community service worker than a mayor, and the term "island" makes you feel more isolated, and town just feels more better, i don't like being totally isolated, even know there is a low pixel count, the game just ROCKS! and the villagers have more personality, and you can make your island like north korea in new horizons, and i don't like that, villagers can't leave the island without your permission, and in new leaf they can leave and move in when they want, (well, that kind of stinks when you have rare villagers, so i'm gonna split that point between new leaf and new horizons) so final score: 3.5/0.5, new leaf wins!

New Leaf had a better story line and depth of play. ACNH has more decoration aspects. Both good games but I would prefer ACNH mechanics with the depth of ACNL.

I genuinely don't care about terraforming and decorating the city. New Leaf had so much to do and was actually fun to play. It felt alive.

My biggest complaint about NH is how everything feels so barren just to you to mess up with the whole "city planning" idea. They could just expanded the NL mayor capacities in the late game. But in NH you're essentially GOD and you choose what to do and not.

I feel like even after the update, new horizons just doesn’t have a lot of content. It’s almost only about decorating, but to me animal crossing has always been so much more than that. So in terms of gameplay, new horizons is seriously a downgrade from new leaf 💔

How I think the next animal crossing should be is keeping everything in new horizons with better graphics and more furniture and other cool stuff but add more things to make villagers and NPC’s more interesting because when I’m bored in the game I like talking to villagers but if they did more interesting stuff then it would be so cool just imagine watching your villagers interact with stuff on your island and overall just having a life there instead of walking around and occasionally sitting down on a chair or singing

If the next AC game mixes the town evolution and upgrades from NL with the “start from scratch” and customization from NH, it will blow both games out. I love New Horizons, but it’s NL by a landslide

The villagers in new leaf were definitely a love/hate relationship for me. I used to play new leaf on my brother's 3ds and since he was the mayor he set up a house for me cuz at the time of playing I was pretty young. So I just went out and befriended several villagers, but my bff was Blueberry by far. Then came Halloween, when she ruined my special clothes by throwing mud at it and I got so sad I cried and my brother bullied her for me until she left but didnt tell me till years later, just saying she left by herself. I still hate her till today tbh. Also Blanche once came up to me FUMING bc my brother asked in a letter if she was a duck or goose and she angrily told me to tell him she was a SWAN, not a goose or duck, and it was hilarious.

The only reason why New Horizons will always be better is the fact that we can place items outside

I really think this opinion may vary between those players who don’t care that much about personalization and are rather more immersive with villagers/npc’s and those who love flexing their creativity the most. I find myself being a bit more identified with the last group :)

I think a neat idea for the next Animal Crossing is the option to pick any song according to the hour from any animal crossing game for every hour. For example, say I don’t like the 5pm music in the next animal crossing. I go to my nook phone and I choose “change music” and go down to 5pm and select “new leaf” for 5pm.

From someone who discovered AC with New Horizons and went back to try New Leaf, I agree with many others saying that New Leaf just has so much heart 💓 New Horizons wins in so many areas but it is disgusting how good New Leaf still is. I really hope that the next one is a perfect blend of NL and NH, then our souls will be happy 🥰

New Horizons was the first AC game I've ever played, and I love it so much. But I got New Leaf on X-Mas and I have been obsessed with it. I really can't choose.

If you have a gamecube I highly recommend trying the og animal crossing

New Leaf holds a special place in my heart because my Mom and I one hundred percent completed it together, she passed away 27 March 2020 :/ she never got to play new horizons

I feel like if animal crossing and new leafs good stuff combined it would be the best ac game.

I never played NL but I played WW and PG, and NH. Honestly all the games are magic because you can use them as tools for divination, and your layout makes a difference. Honestly I’m just happy that Animal Crossing now gives you a whole island. The next one should be an MMORPG.

I don't mind the customization limits in new leaf actually; I feel it allows more room for creativity in what you can do to make your town look nice and it gave it more personality

ACNL! Horizons was great over lockdown, but I realised that having restrictions made being creative more fun!

I'll say it this way: New Horizons is a better game, but New Leaf is A BETTER ANIMAL CROSSING.

New Leaf was my first Animal Crossing game. No joke, it literally taught me how to spell when I was a kid (almost every word, phrase, or social skill I have is all because I learned it from New Leaf). That’s why I’m thankful I didn’t grow up with Wild World lol, if I did I’d probably be walking around calling people Coconutters or something

As someone who even loved designing, I still like new leaf better! It was far more difficult to obtain money for furniture in new horizons. Not to mention the number of wallpapers and furniture items that got taken out of new horizons. New horizons has no soul, no heart. It’s just appearances and even then it lacks to me.

I think New Horizon's only qualifies that make it better than new leaf are the graphics and outdoor customization, but pretty much everything about new leaf was better. Better music, more special npcs, could work at the cafe, more store upgrades, the island mini games, better dialogue, more house customization options. The constant updates new horizons got were stupid as well because they were just adding all the stuff that should've been there from the very beginning. New horizons was just a shell of a game when they first released it. This has not stopped it from being one of my most played games ever though :/

Did you know you can beep the horn in the rv and anyone outside can hear it in New Leaf..also to me, they are tied. They are both really amazing games!

I miss errands! I miss the npc's! I miss the island and the minigames! I miss the shopping districts, the different shops, the good music (I'm sorry but the New Horizons' hourly music SUCKS. Lacks personality everywhere, not a single memorable fun track.)... There are just WAY less variety of things to do. New Leaf felt like developing a very lively town, while New Horizons just feels like an empty blank canvas you can customize to your liking to make it look cute. That's all, it really is lacking in every other field... Still a very nice game tho.

If new horizons and new leaf combined a lot of what made their stuff really standout I’d be so hyped. The character customization in NH and the town feel and all the shops in NL is what I really loved about both. I play both now that I finally got my hands on NL lol Awesome video!!

I would honestly argue against the consistent updates that you mentioned in favor of New Horizons. This resulted in a game that was somewhat unfinished at launch.

Honestly: if I could have New Horizons graphics and gameplay but New Leaf NPCs and setting, I’d have the perfect Animal Crossing game.

I feel like new horizons could’ve had a lot more updates, since it just gets….old after a while

i currently play new leaf on my 3DS and have only ever played that and city folk. from personal experience, new leaf is the best. from seeing other people play ACNH, definitely that.

Also, if you have New leaf NPC's amiibo cards, you can invite ALL of them into Happy Home Paradise to create a home for them ( Shrunk, Katie etc. )

And new leaf Isabelle didn't sound like a dying rat when she was singing

The only plus to New Horizons is graphics and island decorating. It has practically no content. New Leaf wins, hands down. It’s not even close.

I love ACNH and I probably do like it more between the two because online play is much easier and convenient and you have the ability to decorate your island with custom designs and furniture, as well as terraforming. That’s definitely my favorite part of ACNH is theming and decorating my island as well as seeing other’s themes. I like the ease of online play and completing Nook Miles tasks (although New Leaf had something similar, MEOW coupons). That being said, it definitely feels unfinished even with the 2.0 update. Maybe it was just because I was a lot younger, but it really feels like there was so much more to do and work towards in New Leaf than there is in New Horizons. I love both games, I just feel like ACNH just has more potential to it that was unreached. I still play, but it’s a very died out community compared to 2020/2021. They should release more updates to this game.

you know what i miss from new leaf?the minigames from the island, i used to play with my friends all the time there it got pretty competitive too ahahaha in new horizons you just.... go around your city and thats it, it gets boring pretty easily

One thing I don’t like about acnh is the repeated dialogue- but I’ve never played any other ac games, so I’m not sure if the earlier games also have repeated dialogue

That's a fair opinion, if you are someone who really loves decorating and making the island your own that I think New horizons is definitely a better game for that. It really focuses on the player being able to create their own world and I think that's really cool. But personally I prefer new leaf, I really prefer the setting. Main Street has to be one of my favorite locations in any video game, I just have so many incredible memories there. Not to mention I like animal crossing a lot more for the character part of it, I'm not too great at the island design and I really prefer to focus on the characters and collecting items and stuff. I can't tell you on the island just catching bugs, I know that new leaf doesn't have the best villagers, that's when they started to get a lot nicer. But in my opinion the villagers are significantly, like way way more interesting than the New horizons ones. They still feel like they have for the most part unique and interesting personalities. New leaf is definitely my favorite

I didn’t play New Leaf. I played City Folk and Wild World but missed New Leaf somehow. I’d still like to play it cuz it sounds fun. But I like being able to put things outside. Island tours wouldn’t really be a thing if we couldn’t put things outside.
