    great video explanation! I currently have been brewing with this unit for about 6 years and I was looking to maybe change for another system only because you don't see many home brewers using the Anvil system but honestly you guys explained it so well that at the end of the day you don't need any fancy equipment, you just need to concentrate on brewing a good beer and Anvil Foundry makes it as simple as that. Thanks for making this video, you guys made me fall in love with my system all over again! Cheers!

    No neoprene jacket required. The temp has an offset, so the reading your getting is really closer to the temp of the lower center of the mash. Plus the 120/240 is amazing! One of the first, if not the actual first to have low density burners to reduce scorching. Simple, cost effective and a great bang for the buck without a lot of things that could stop working on brew day, like WiFi or Bluetooth connectivity.

    After brewing for 15 years on a 3 vessel rims system i tried the 10.5 foundary to make brewing quicker. And it did! I have shaved off hours with set up, tear down, and cleaning. And, it makes great beer and is fun to use. I highly recommend.

    I've had a 10.5 for a few years now. You forgot to mention that it can double as a fermenter. I've fermented two beers in mine. Step mashing is a little tough with it, it can be done, but you have to be able to run the pump at high speed to keep the wort flowing over the elements and only turn the elements only as high as is needed to get to the next temperature. If not, you have to lift the grain basket/bag out scrape the sugars off the bottom, and reset the high temperature limit switch that sits dead center on the bottom of the unit. A pretty well thought out video.

    I would like to see perfs at least half way if not all the way up the basket. I have found (and others too) that when using the recirculation pump a kind of pressure differential occurs causing the water flow to only travel from top to bottom and then up again to repeat. The water on the sides between the malt pipe and the kettle wall does not get pulled into that flow. Gravity checks from the top of the mash and coming out of the valve show close to equal readings but water taken by a pipet between the pipe and the kettle measured considerably lower. When you pull the malt pipe at the end of the mash it's like adding water to your mash and the gravity you checked before is now lower. The way to get around this is to lift the malt pipe slowly a couple of times during the mash. Just enough to incorporate that still water with the rest of the mash. You can also do without the malt pipe and go with just a BIAB bag but the results are about the same. I've had a 10.5 and now have a 6.5. Both have the same issues. Conversely I also have the SS Brewtech SVBS which has perforations on the entire malt pipe and I have not experienced anything like the Anvil issue. If Anvil/Blichmann improve the malt pipe with a fully perforated malt pipe they can vastly improve what is already a nice system.

    The 240V option with same equipment is very attractive. Seems like a pump would be highly recommended (almost necessary). Wish the 10.5 supported a bigger grain bill... Presume you are referring to aluminum foil instead of tin foil. The latter is only for hats these days.

    Personal experience here! stir frequently when adding the grain it will help. I stir about every 10-15 minutes while in mash. Adding rice hulls will prevent compacting. Lifting this can be a bit of a pain to haul the entire thing up(if you don't have much upper body/shoulder strength), its not messy the drain works well. But if you have somewhere to attach a hoist it really makes life easy! Otherwise... This is literally an extremely easy brew system out there. I can brew beer without interruption to my day. The only thing that takes a little time is clean up. As they said it beeps at near boil, it also beeps to notify you that it hit steeping temperature as well! My one major tip I found.. After lifting the grain basket out to drain, set it to boil(110).... essentially the time it beeps at you to boil, the grains have drained most of the liquid off! Major tip 2 i just hose off the basket outside, But if you have the recirculation pump. I scrub it out, then run a small bit of sanitizer through and put it away until next brew.

  • @RobNorton

    @RobNorton

    3 ай бұрын

    Oh also.. if you have recirculation pump.. you can use the wort to sanitize it for transfer to fermenting vessel, the pump is rated up to a certain temp. Going off memory I think i set to recirculate at like 170 or something like that.

    I have the 10.5 system, looking to upgrade to 18 gallon soon. I'll use the 10.5 system for sparge water. I have a rope ratchet, I use it to hold the malt pipe higher for sparging, easier to see the markings inside. I don't use a bag to brew, but I use a wheelbarrow to take my malt pipe outside and dump. If you buy a dedicated wheelbarrow and flex seal it. You can fill it it with hot water and PBW, have a giant sink to wash malt pipe in outside, if necessary. I've had almost 9.5 gallons at pre boil more than once. I've never boiled over at that level, using Foam axe in the boil. If you have a pump and use a hop basket, or bag. You can periodically circulate during the boil. Not necessary to whirlpool after that way. I don't have one yet, but CIP ball would be nice for cleaning. I'm loving my machine!

    I bought this system about 5 months ago and I really like it. I have been brewing for over 35 years. I was also happy with my cooler and turkey fryer system. The beers come out great either way. I think that most will be happy with the system, but I don't think that people should feel like they need to spend the money for a system like this (or other more expensive options) to get into all-grain brewing. I just don't want to scare new brewers away by thinking that they need one of these systems to get started. Just my two cents.

    I have the 6.5 gallon and on my last brew day I was recirculating and the pump ran dry because it had pulled all the water from the bottom and it was all all sitting on stop and basically not draining at all. I used a few handfuls of rice hulls, stirred it periodically and had my flow rate running very slow. I’m not sure why my mash is getting stuck like that, but I was considering using a bag like they did on the video, but on the inside of the basket, not outside. Anyone else having this issue? Did I have too much grain? Do I need more than just a few handfuls of rice hills? Don’t think I can lower my flow rate any more.

  • @KevinPeffley

    @KevinPeffley

    3 ай бұрын

    I have the 6.5 system and I had a stuck mash the first batch I did. I foolishly didn’t pay attention to the instructions for using the pump. It recommends that you let the mash settle for 10 or 15 minutes before using the pump. After talking to Anvil support, I decided for all other brews that I would use a BIAB system inside the mash tube and as a precaution use at least an ounce of rice hulls for every pound of grain. Also, I always keep the pump running very slowly. You can do this by using the device Anvil gives you, but I ended up purchasing a stainless steel pump head from Anvil and a quick release kit from Amazon. This allows me to control the flow much better. It’s extra money, but for me it’s worth it, as it gives me peace of mind. I hope this helps.

    What plug does it have on the cord?

  • @KevinPeffley

    @KevinPeffley

    3 ай бұрын

    It comes setup with a cord for 240v, but if you want to use 120v, it also comes with a short 120v extension cord. Just switch the Anvil system to 120v, then attach the 120v extension cord to its 240v cord, and plug it into a 120v receptacle. You may also want to have a spare 120v extension cord, as the Anvil system has a pretty short cord.

  • @KevinPeffley
    @KevinPeffley3 ай бұрын

    I purchased the 10.5 system with a recirculation system. It’s worth it, believe me. Then I finally broke down and had a 240v 20A receptacle in my garage along with a 20ft extension cord. The total cost was outrageous, but hey I’m retired and I love making beer. The other thing I recommend is purchasing the stainless steel pump head from Anvil and a quick release system from Amazon. This gives me total confidence that my pump will run slowly so as not to cause a stuck mash. Doing a BIAB is extremely helpful, too. Who wants grain in their wort? Lastly I use one ounce of rice hulls per pound of grain. I once had a stuck mash and I never want that to happen again.

    Sadly this thing sucks. I have had two of them and both had major issues after just a year. The 10.5G I gave away. The 18G should have fixed those issues with the screen but the circuit board randomly shorts out, I have replaced once. And the 20A breaker has failed as well. Blichmann sells you replacement parts for about 300% markup vs OEM.
