What you need to know about internet addiction | Dr. Kimberly Young | TEDxBuffalo

This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. We are all a bit too connected to our smartphones and web-connected devices. Dr. Young helps identify warning signs of Internet addiction and what we can do to manage technology in our daily lives. She also asks “How young is too young?” for screen time, warning parents about the dangers of technology use in children as young as two. She offers strategies for how we can build “Screen Smart” schools, and introduces her new 3-6-9-12 Parenting Guidelines for managing tech use at home.
Psychologist Dr. Kimberly Young launched the first study on internet addiction in 1995, wrote "Caught in the Net" in 1998, and has worked ever since to develop and discuss research and treatment for a rapidly evolving problem.
Young is a professor at St. Bonaventure University and founder and director of the Center for Internet Addiction Recovery in Bradford, Pa. She founded the first inpatient clinic for Internet addiction recovery in the United States at the Bradford Regional Medical Center and her work has been featured in The New York Times, Newsweek, Time, USAToday, CNN, Fox News, Good Morning America, MSNBC News, and The Today Show.
About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

My weakness and addiction to the Internet has destroyed my concentration, many relationships, and generally made me unsocial. When I have to leave my house, I can't wait to get back home and get back on the computer. I've wasted years that I will never get back. I've destroyed my own life with technology.

Honestly I would love to get back the time with my kids when they were little and I was gaming trying not to think about my failing relationships. The moral of the story, life is short. Internet/games/virtual stuff will always be there. Accomplishments there don't mean as much as in the real world.

At some point I removed the internet from my apartment for around 3 months. I was attending an art school at the time and the first difference I noticed was that I was able to study for things I wasn't interested in at all. We had an art history exam. I didn't have any interest in the subject, but yet I had no problems sitting down and study for it. I gained the discipline of a samurai. My creativity could also run freely. I had lots of ideas in my head and had the discipline and drive to make those ideas come true. It was a fantastic time. I think the internet can be really harmful for creative people.

Coming back to this a dear friend told me once that it was about self control, because even before the internet some of us were probably addicted to television, radio, music, etc. Throwing away the internet because of addiction is akin to throwing an encyclopedia out the window just because a spider got into it. But yes you are right that people need to be cautious of this behavior.

You never really know how addicted you are to the internet and how productive you can be until you no longer have it. A year ago we didn't have the Internet for like 2 months or so. And before when our internet was not on I got really bored. I started writing and I'd be angry all the time. I was agitated and on edge. I would come home from school and try the computer to see if it would work. I couldn't focus on anything. I was bored mad. Within the last year I spent a few months off the Internet at home and I started reading. I read a new book every few days. And over time my writing improved and I found myself speaking clearly and I felt a lot better and more productive. Now I'm back to using the Internet and feeling wrong. I'm thinking about taking a break or lowering my usage of Social Media.

I used to read 3-5 books a week before internet was as prolific as it was. From 1998-2003 I would tear through books in hours flat, it gave me great writing skills, so much that I was graded at a masters level when I was in grade 7. The internet has completely stopped that, now I struggle to even read through a few chapters at a time, and get distracted quite easily. It has a very pronounced effect on ones being, something thats addressed not nearly enough in todays society.

A person may not be hurting other people, but may be harming him or herself. Loss of appetite, erratic sleep patterns, inability to motivate oneself outside of internet use (ie: clean the house, shower, take the dog for a walk, etc.) The best friend in your head cannot replace a stroll through the park with a real-life friend or going out for coffee. The touchable world is not instant in gratification, but the internet world is. There can be a conflict of emotional reality between the two. It's like living in a bubble of illusion when a person is on the internet to the exclusion of participating in the world. Communication breaks down in real-time interactions. The internet can be a narcotic balm for the depth of loneliness that far too many human beings feel. On the internet, you can control the environment...or at least in theory you can. Some people can't find the strength to do that, and there are those tragic stories of young people committing suicide because some other user decides to harass them into an emotional state where they feel unable just to turn the machine off and walk away.

***** But, as you say, you are spending time exercising, cooking, and hanging out with people. That is a lot of time not being on the internet and probably doesn't qualify under my own definition of internet addiction. When I had my internet addiction, I never cooked meals, exercise was on the treadmill while listening to KZread videos, and I didn't want to hang out with friends or go anywhere with my boyfriend. I wanted to stay at home and do something on the internet (KZread videos, shopping online, social media, or Netflix). I would try to do stretching but I would end up on the internet while on my stretching mat for hours. You may spend a lot of time using the internet, but it doesn't sound like you have an addiction, or at least a severe one.

When i was 16 my Father bought me a laptop and i started spending hours online and also watching porn. I also played a lot of playstation. All of a sudden my cognitive abilities declined. I started developing social anxiety and depression. Was it the internet? Maybe. But all i know is every time when i spend a lot of time on the internet / video games/ porn it ruins my mind.

+Jonét Harry There r 400 different approaches to counselling. Some r better in dealing with addiction than others. Client-counsellor relationship is also paramount. Find counsellors who r very knowledgeable in the field (a specialist maybe). Cbt is good n gives good results, but sometimes not really long lasting. Gestalt therapy is very good to deal with addiction. Many other types too. But a good counsellor would probably utilises various approaches rather than one. I had chosen different approaches/counsellors at different stages of my addiction. I am learning psychology at Uni too now, so I know the effects of things on our brains and emotions and behaviours. With things like these the clients normally don't realise how much power they have within themselves. It can be done, trust me.

Maybe not for good, but maybe for a few months, long enough for people to be forced to start thinking for themselves, rather than going to their cell phone to look up something and remembering/learning how to interact with human beings in a healthy way. My boyfriend's cell phone tower DID go down a few weeks ago for about 1 day. He was finally forced to use my land line to talk to his net work provider and he would often say I don 't need my landline! lol He got it straightened out and can use his cell phone again, but I was glad to see that it can happen and it proved to him that it's a good idea to have a land line.

I’m writing it for those who are still addicted. First, take heart from the doctor’s examples of all the types of people who have received treatment. Let us assume that many recover. You can too. It will be painful. Now you have to be willing to give up all of your Internet activities, if the digital diet doesn’t work for you. Digital nutrition is a bit of a joke I think. Books are better.

I just read (in 2021) that screen time starts thinning the neocortex (thinking ability) even in adults (brain fog, anyone?) and impairs our executive function skills as well. It's not just a dopamine addiction, which is bad enough, long hours on the screen are causing mental impairment. Right now, many of us are isolated due to lockdowns, and we're more prone to screen addiction.

Wanted to maybe write this in a journal but maybe I could write it here in case anyone relates, I’ve been struggling with depression for a while now and I used to think my digital addiction was a result of it but I actually now think its vice-versa. Im feeling sad and tired all the time because I’m so much more concerned with enriching my digital life than my real life. Im only happy when Im watching tv or when I’m scrolling and once I’m pulled out of it to go to school or work or even to hang out with friends, I get frustrated and all I do is count the time until I can endlessly watch or scroll again. It was enough to make me think that I will never be happy, I will never love my job or love what I’m learning or connect deeply with people. I have no hobbies, I feel lonely, and Im anxious when Im out of the house. This addiction is real and I am just now coming to terms with it. Ill try out this 48-hr detox next weekend and come up with some more strategies to combat this. Maybe now that I found the root of my depression and anxiety I can cope with it much better. Glad I found this video, its validated what I’ve been thinking...

I used to heavily disagree with idea of technology being addictive for years. I'm 20, and I completely agree now. If I was forbidden or restricted in using internet, I think I would have never come to this, and one day when I get "off the chain", I would completely destroy my life, not ever stopping to take perspective. Please don't be harsh when you limit your kids and loved ones. Only give them perspective, wisdom and love, but do not restrain or limit them. They need to see it for themselves.

What a great talk, a lot to think about for sure. I've been addicted to internet and social media in the beginning. I was 12 when I had my first computer and I think around 13 when I had internet at home and it's always been struggle to balance it. I needed to learn for myself what was ' too much time' and figure out that spending hours online wasn't making me happy at all. I felt even more sad and sorry for myself, jealous of all the cool people who did wonderful things, who had ' a life'. I've changed over the years, learning that people mostly lie on the internet and only show the good things in their lives. I'm now trying to see the internet as a tool to learn, connect and grow and it's helping me spend less time online. I really liked Dr.Young's three tips, they sound so simple but it's really hard at first. But, it does help so I'll keep doing it, with ups and downs.

No, the problem is that everyone, including yourself, are on the Internet. Even if you quit, you won't have a social life or friends because everyone else will still be looking at their phones. Being home schooled is a whole different challenge. But I will say this, living on your own with time to reflect on yourself isn't as bad as society would have you believe.

She did not stress enough most important point - Internet is Actually BAD. All those lies we tell our selfs that we have more and easier access to quality information are WRONG. Information is USELESS without practice (action). Same as money is USELESS without ability to spend them. MORE easy information and MORE easy "COnnections" is NOT NOT NOT good. That what she had to stress about. Being half addicted is the same (almost) as being addicted. Scientific fact we have to learn is - a lot of INFROMATION IS BAD. Same as a lot of SUGAR is bad, a lot of sitting is bad. Internet is actually HARMFUL. NO need to idealize and godify it.

My parents had to order me out of the house to get me to go outside and play. I'm a senior citizen now and just got rid of my TV a few years ago. I have found myself to be prone to internet addictions of all types. I just uninstalled 3 video games yesterday and came up with a better alternative for gaming: board games and in my case wargames. I may make a therapeutic video to that effect sometime soon. When I find my life at a standstill because of various addictive behavior I evaluate and analyze my situation, I look at alternatives for a constructive solution to whatever problem is standing in the way of my progress. You can too.

***** I totally agree with you that Drs and companies can have ulterior motives. It is a shame. However, that doesn't take away from the reality that the internet can be an addiction. People don't need pills or a higher power to quit. I have seen people kick addictions without these resources. I am not a big advocate for pills because that in itself can turn addictive. I believe that God has helped some kick addictions. But when it comes down to it, the addict has to WANT to kick the addiction. Usually it doesn't happen until the pain of the solution is less than the pain of the problem.

In the course text, research that suggests young children (before 3rd grade) who are allowed to play lots of video games and use technology unbridled are indeed making strong neural connections. However, these connections tend to be ones in the right hemisphere of the brain, and that AT THE EXPENSE OF THE CONNECTIONS in the left cerebral hemisphere. The left side is used for verbal-linguistic tasks. No wonder we are seeing more and more reading deficits in students!

my brother is severely addicted to the internet and idk how to bring it up to him. he won’t listen to me and be in denial i feel so bad but i’m not gonna tell my mom either because that’s not my place but it’s fuckin up his life and i never noticed till now because i got out of rehab and it’s all making sense he isolates, hasn’t went to school in years, is irritable to everyone, lost basic social skills, and depressed i wanna help him but there’s only so much i can do to get through to him bc he gets so defensive.

With new technology like apple watch or smart speakers, people are constantly connected more than ever. Companies are trying to make "connecting" as easy as possible. Internet addiction is not getting better, but starting to move from an illness to a new norm. This trend will definitely continue. Smart glasses, VR, BCI are the examples of new tech. Will people abandon reality, and be swallowed into online world?

I'm addicted to youtube when I'm home, I get fascinated by porn, but I don't have any impulse for illicit drugs or online gaming or gambling. Seeking death and living life all at the same time.

By the way the media is also several things. So it is really hard to figure out why the internet/whatever media content is effecting people a certain way. Is it really the screened tool that’s causing a pronlem or the content? Another thing is to try and see what content people are looking at if they are having issues.
