Hi guys, In this video I talk about the insider information about the EECS and CS Major life here at UC Berkeley. There are a ton of things that nobody talks about and secrets that nobody tells you, but I spill the beans today! Let me know if you guys found these points useful in helping to guide your college decisions. Hoping everyone is staying safe during these times! I just found out my internship got turned virtual so I'm pretty sad about that but at least it's not cancelled. Let me know what you're going through and comment down below anything I can help you with!
Xo,
Mere

Straight facts - I can confirm everything said here is true. One thing I would note is that even though working 10+ hrs a week is enough to get your tuition paid, most TA positions are either 8 or 20 hrs, with 10 hrs and 15 hrs being more rare and usually reserved for grad students, so you could potentially be working much more than that.

Awesome video! Can you give me some advice about applying L&S vs EECS for CS? I have good test scores/academics, very CS-focused ECs, and a decent amount of awards(CS and non CS) but nothing extremely extraordinary(not in the ballpark of Siemens or Intel Semis), and I'm out of state. I definitely do want to get into Berkeley, but in your opinion how great is the EECS applicant/admitted pool? Does everyone have like extremely impressive ECs/awards compared to L&S? Thank you!

Berkeley loves people involved in the community-start your own club at your school helping elderly during the pandemic doing grocery delivery. Then write good heart based essays focusing on the core pillars. That community service can be with 3 friends, all ivies and Berkeley love self starter and problem solvers in their community- far more important than clubs at school, or athletics. My daughter just got into Berkeley- we switched priorities around junior year.

Wait, how can you just DIY your own CS path? Cause every major has set classes you have to take like the intro classes 61a 61b 71, but there’s already a set plan for the rest of the classes that you need to take to graduate? Unless you mean the 12-16 units ofnelectives?

The truth is that the in-class curriculum is maybe 80-90% as good as Berkeley's, but keep in mind what people get out of Berkeley isn't just the classroom instruction quality. It's about working with talented peers on startup ideas and club projects, or doing research in some of the top labs in the world. The Berkeley brand name will also carry you far in Silicon Valley. No matter where you go, though, you can take it into your own hands to succeed. Talk to your TAs and professors, do leetcode to get summer internships, and hang out with people you respect. Ivies don't inflate grades 🙄. Berkeley students are just not as good (don't take this the wrong way). Berkeley classes are actually easier than Ivies and Stanford in most cases. Berkeley is a good school, but I do get annoyed by hearing all this dumb shit from Berkeley students. I'm not sure I could stomach being surrounded by this environment everyday. I also think the teaching quality is better at private schools generally which may also improve student performance.
