What you can't do on the indoor rower - and why...

Спорт

Lewis sent me his footage and asked for a review. Having only rowed for 18 months, his technique is remarkable. No question. However, there is this interesting and inefficient motion of his upper body and his seat just before the catch. The reason for it is a major difference between the linear drive erg and the boat native set-up.

@@thomasj8105 Yes I agree, his shins go beyond the vertical, not really needed for such a tall guy, this might be also why he is slightly shooting the slide when starting the drive, this is however very good technique !

Olivier Chailloux How does one fix this particular issue with the shins going past vertical? As a 6’3” beginner it’s more comfortable getting to that position but I’d love to break that bad habit early if possible.

I find that it often occurs because there is not enough forward lean of the body. That in turn can be caused by lack of flexibility that prevents you getting far enough over. Check that first. Another possible cause is simply trying to reach too far forward. Given your height it’s unlikely you need to try to row really long. If you are getting your body over from the finish it may also be that lack of flexibility can allow your seat to move forward under your shoulders as you approach the front of the slide. It can also occur if the feet are set too low in the boat. That makes it very easy to “fall” over your feet at the front of the slide. It’s less likely for someone of your height though.

I'm surprised there's no mention of the loss of connection with the footplate. You can see his toes start to lift halfway through the drive. The body appears to swing all the way to the finish, so he can't use the arm draw to maintain connection. Some 'feet out' rowing should help.
