The management office No. 14 has an invitation for executives, which is a kind of special feature where they stay and eat when the deputy general level comes down from Pyongyang. When executives come down from Pyongyang, they will select women aged 21 to 25 with even faces among female prisoners, bathe them, and dedicate them to the executives. Executives use these women as all kinds of tricks and secretly kill them as "runners" to keep them confidential.

Soon the USA would be out of entitled and snowflakes and North Korea could deal with them, while the USA have some great new citizens who wouldn't call the manager because the one who doesn't work there won't help them to find stuff... My country (Romania) abolished communism in 1989, but we still live under it's effects even to this day, considering that most of our politicians that came after the Revolution were the ones that had some influence during the communist era and corruption is still a huge thing in most Eastern European countries. In my opinion, communism is the worst thing that ever happened during the history of this country and most of Eastern Europe. • @kgs2280

Yes, she’s comparing Socialism to a Dictatorship. They’re NOT the same thing. The Nazis and Russians confused people (on purpose) by putting the word “Socialist” in the name of their party (Nazis) and in the name of their country (country). Neither was Socialist; both were dictatorships (and the Nazis were even further right than Sociaists even though people on the right in the U.S. accuse it of being a far-left system). Since then, people all over the world think Socialism means a dictatorship. That’s why so many right-wingers get freaked out when people on the left hold up Scandinavian and other European countries, in any way, as good examples of good governance. That’s why I always use the term “Democratic Socialism” to explain these country’s social system. Democratic Socialism is NOT pure Socialism either, and is a combination-style between Democracy (and Capitalism) and pure Socialism. In the U.S. I refer to our system as “toxic” or end-stage Capitalism”, because our corporations really run everything, including our government and politicians, and EVERYTHING has to be all about profits for the corporations, no matter who or how many people get hurt. In those more left-leaning countries in Europe, things are purposely run to actually help the people who do the actual work and pay taxes, and the people live very much happier lives in general. I highly recommend watching Michael Moore’s documentary “Where to Invade Next”. It’s an outstanding documentary about how various European countries run various aspects of their societies, including work, education, politics, legal institutions (like prisons) women’s rights and vacations. It’s a real eye-opener, and i even cried during it thinking how much better our lives here in the U.S. could be if we instituted many of those policies. But, the corporations (and the corporate-owned politicians) would never allow it because those things do not increase THEIR profits, but actually cost them money. We are nothing but slave labor to them, ironically much like a dictatorship. It’s called a Corporatocracy. What they don’t understand (or actually really don’t care about) is that healthier, better educated, happier people work better longer and produce more for the country and economy in the long-term, not to mention that the crime rates go down because happier well-paid people commit fewer crimes. But that doesn’t factor into authoritarianism. Sorry to go on a long rant, but I always feel the need to clear up the misconceptions about the word “Socialism” that are being spread to invoke fear in the populace.

All NKoreans are already living under threat of death at any moment at the whim of a madman. In South Korea, (as well as many other countries) it's illegal and punishable by law. You also mentioned about people who struggle to make ends meet under a capitalist society. However, just because the US has better conditions than that of North Korea does not mean that there is no plight, and should not mean that people are unable to be critical of their own situation. It is always a good idea to remind yourself of your blessings and to get perspective from others situations, but often times change comes from criticism and activism. Where would the US be today if everyone just said well at least it's better than North Korea? The civil rights and women's rights movements were in the last 100 years. I understand that this is better than you experienced, but there is always room for growth if the system isn't working for the majority of it's people.

In Scotland, we have free education (even undergraduate degree level) and free healthcare (something I think everyone should be entitled to). We all pay fair taxes (which are calculated based on earnings) and this pays for these kinds of things. It shocks me to hear that people in America often don't call an ambulance if they are seriously injured or dying because if they did they would be bankrupt. Of course, North Korea is worse than America but that doesn't mean America is good. I am so grateful not to be in either of these countries, to be honest. And as you say, there is always room for growth. Scotland is not perfect either.

Many of the Americans who might say they want socialism are those who cannot afford healthcare, childcare or education. What they want is not necessarily socialism but social policies and programs. These concepts are regularly conflated with socialism because of political rhetoric in the US. US media and politicians often capitalize on the fear of communism and socialism to prevent progressive legislation from passing.

I am greatful for the freedom I have in my country. Mostly to my ancestors and people today who were like defectors. Fought and died for freedoms and justice that were denied to them for hundreds of years. From Native Americans, to indentured servants, slaves, and victims of hate crimes, it was their strength, tenacity, courage, and Voice that has shaped this country the way it is. Our government be it republican or democrat, rarely enact laws for the benefit of the people unless it’s protested for and pushed for by the people. That is why I will always encourage people to use their voice, peaceful protest, and influence to push for changes they want to see in this country. I believe there is a difference in being unaware of your freedom, and just wanting to make this place as equal for all as possible. It can become dangerous to not question or call out officials and policies on either side. And finally, we must always work on systems that benefits the countries citizens, so we are never in a position where we are just numbers to use and discarded as she explains in North Korea. It is important to note, this is an easily researchable fact, that the top countries to live in in the world (judged by poverty rates, average house income, quality of life, affordability, crime rate, etc) have a mixture of capitalist and socialist policies. They normally are capitalist with socialist policies on things such as education, healthcare, and other government programs. The idea the two cannot exist in harmony is proven to be false by so many countries. As well, there has been unfortunately horrible dictatorships in capitalist societies. At the end of the day, one can abuse any system (ism) for their own agenda. Capitalism and socialism are not exempt from being used to abuse citizens.

The former was able to leave and settle in Japan with his wife and daughters, while the latter claimed that the regime "had always taken good care of him" with rations of beer and cigarettes.

I understand your point, in North Korea it’s terrible there and it’s citizens lack basic human rights and freedom. I think it’s terrible, but I think that it shouldn’t detract from Americans criticizing our own democratic government. Yes we are way better off here in America than North Korea but our country isn’t perfect either. There are a lot of issues to be solved, homelessness, poverty, racism, sex trafficking, all happen in America as well and we cannot be content leaving these things the way they are. You can be grateful about your rights and still want improvement for the rights of your own and others. We should never stop developing and changing, when we always have the possibility to make things better.

She’s not claiming America is perfect and she never has. But to compare the problems in the USA to North Korea where human rights don’t even exist is beyond ridiculous. If you value human life, you don’t look at NK communist regime and think, “they’re doing something right, let’s try that!”

@@Steveinthailand No she's not. She was born there. You have obviously not watched any of her videos. She escaped when she was 13 but ahe didn't think of it as "escape". She was starving and she could see China across the river. She just thought if she could make it over where the light was (because they hardly ever have electricity in North Korea), maybe she could knock on someone's door and they would give her a bowl of rice. Just because you went there as a teacher (probably in the area of the highest social class) you don't know what it's like for those people living over there.

Before I even finish watching this, I just want to say: It's important to realize economies all SIT ON A SCALE between two EXTREMES. Socialism and capitalism are just the words we use to describe how that scale is leaning. All countries lean one way or the other, but NO country has EVER been purely socialist or purely capitalist. Not even North Korea, or the USA, or Soviet Russia, or Germany. Pure, genuine socialism would be a utopia but pure socialism is NOT POSSIBLE with humanity's current technology. The closest we can currently get is a dystopia where everyone is equally miserable, like North Korea. And pure capitalism can't exist, because in order for pure capitalism to happen, there would need to be absolutely no government interference in the economy, in any way, ever. No regulations protecting workers. No taxes. No limitations on what people are allowed to sell. No requirement for businesses to be honest with their marketing. In other words, in order for a government to function, it needs to regulate the economy. And in order to be "fully capitalist", you would need to have 0 regulation, meaning pure capitalism can't exist in a place where a government exists. So, every government exists somewhere between those two impossible extremes. Socialism and capitalism don't represent 'equality vs inequality' and neither one of them is good or evil. A better analogy would be comparing them to 'the sun and moon'. Both are equally important, and every place needs some amount of each, even if people have different opinions about which one they want to see more of. If the words capitalism and socialism didn't exist, only a few countries would have developed their economies differently. And in my opinion, North Korea isn't really socialist at all, and as far as I know, it never was. In order to be truly socialist, it would need to be a place where everyone is equal, and where the government uses it's resources to provide the most benefit to the most possible people. North Korea is, in reality, a fascist state wearing a socialist mask. China IS socialist, but it's also fascist. North Korea is JUST fascist, with a thick coating of socialist propaganda covering the truth.

Before anyone gets mad at me, just know I also agree with everything she said - I'm really just elaborating. She's right that the people trying to move to North Korea are making a very bad decision. But North Korea isn't genuinely socialist - it's just fascist. None of the dystopian countries that have been labeled as socialist ever really achieved socialism.

I feel compassion that you suffered greatly in North Korea and I do welcome you to USA. I also thank you for sharing your experiences. Yes, in America we have way more freedoms. I feel there should be a balance between capitalism and extreme socialism (communism). For example, we should be able to teach our own children if we choose as long as they know the basics: math, English, History and Science. We should be able to have rain barrels and there are town or communities that forbid this because of the Water Companies. Our huge businesses rule the country. China is not a pure communist state anymore but tyrannical and North Korea is like America was 100 years ago when the common people or majority barely scraped a living. I had a Chinese roommate who has a green card to work as a professor in the University I worked. I got an earful of info. America is not totally free but yes, I would not want to live anywhere else, may Canada. Korea is an extreme tryannical government. In the 60's there were hippie communes and the people that governed the communes got the better food, clothes and shelter, they were not take care of. I agree Communism doesn't work. Russia, China, North Korea, Cuba, North Vietnam for examples, overnight became Communist. Should be a balance. I have lived through different presidents for many decades and I realize you only have been here for a while. I appreciate your comments but I think you need to look into the large corporations who pay $$$ to government officials to pass laws that benefit them and corporation lobbyists who horse trade (negotiation to get bills passed for corporations to pay 0.00 taxes). Yes, we have it good in comparison to Korea, you are right, however, since we have more freedoms, like freedom of speech to critically challenge the corruption in our government that is supposed to serve the people. Since I pay taxes, I deserve help getting on feet during the pandemic and so do others. If we don't get paid a fair wage and huge corporations do not pay taxes, our economic health is at peril.

My parents escaped from a communist country. I understand that the ideals of a communist or socialist society seem very appealing to many, but the realities are very far from what people imagine it is. It is hell. To further illustrate what Yeonmi said: my father was a lawyer, but when the communists came in, they took his law degree and said "You will now paint train cars." If he had refused, he would have been shot or taken to prison. He had 2 siblings: 1 also left, another stayed. The life of the 1 who stayed was very different from the 2 who left. I can't imagine the regret of those who choose to move to such a place and live under such oppression. Why would you idealize a place that does not allow anyone to leave??
