    Liverpool fan here - The "Trent in midfield" debate I do agree with, it's not working as anticipated with England, however the narrative is minimalized, I'll explain: I've seen Trent play a more advanced midfield-like role for Liverpool for a full season in the season just gone, so he can do the job, we know he can, we've seen it... The problem is when he gets on the ball he's constantly looking for that long ball over the top of the defence, which relies on the forward players making that run in behind the defensive line constantly, as soon as Trent gets on the ball for Liverpool Salah & Luis Diaz instinctively know to immediately make that run in behind, whereas for England Trent will get on the ball, he'll look up, but Kane/ Saka/ Foden/ Bellingham don't make that run in behind, it's as though Southgate is telling them not to run in behind, so Trent's only option is to play the ball sideways or backwards... So the problem isn't Trent, the problem is Southgate not knowing what to do with him or having a positive attacking system that gets the best out of him, it's like Southgate has a Ferrari he isn't taking out of 1st gear, same with a lot of these really talented players to be fair...

  • @stuartswanton1676

    @stuartswanton1676

    spot on, nobody is running forward so Trent has more time on the ball and gets closed down quickly, loses the ball and ends up getting the blame. Watkins made one run in behind and had a shot on goal, it's not rocket science but Southgate just can't seem to see it.

    I honestly think it is easy: GK: Pickford Defence: Walker - Stones - Guehi - Trippier Midfield - 6: Rice - 8: Bellingham - 10: Foden Attack - Saka - Kane - Gordon I don't understand everyones obsession with Bellingham playing the 10. I understand he had a great season for Madrid, but that was a completely different setup. He played basically as a false 9 with the wingers cutting in. In the 10 for england, it was never going to be the same and was always going to be less space. Also look back to the World Cup in Qatar. We played Bellingham in the 8 next to Rice and he was arguably our player of the tournament. So I don't understand why people don't think he should be in the 8 as a box to box. Foden plays better in the 10 and I would say is better suited to the 10 role. I imagine the 10 as a more creative player, can turn on the spot and drive at defence and then sit on the edge when it is delivered. Foden plays this way, compared to Bellingham who wants to arrive into the box, which he could better in the 8 role as a box to box midfielder, similar to the role Gundogun performed at City. Gordon on the left is for keeping the width and having another winger who wants to attack the line just as much as cutting in. I like Eze but don't think he offered much and suffers the same issue of wanting to cut in or be central too often which we don't need and I don't blame him, he is more naturally a 10 anyway. Lastly is Kane, I think someone needs ot have a word with him about discipline. I understand he wants to drop deep and receive the ball but we don't need that, we need a Haaland esk player who is willing to sit high and doesn't care if he only touches the ball 4 time,s as long as those touches are shots on goal. If Kane can't keep the discipline to do this and stay, then we need to consider Watkins and Toney who would probably be more than willing to do this role, to get a chance at playing/starting. This to me the the simple solution and with this structure, I feel we can then work on better tactics, as we have players who can press in there position and as a unit. I also feel against Denmark our passing was off and so with this improving, we should naturally be better here and also hope the pitch isn't fucked like it was last game. Curious to know what other people think about this potential team?

  • @NSorSomething

    @NSorSomething

    5 күн бұрын

    Completely agree. Foden has been built up since the academy to play in that 10 role. He was our next David Silva, then De Bruyne claimed that space after Silva left and Foden will be the one after KDB. Hes just talented enough to slot into the team wherever. His strengths all lie in the 10 which is why this has been his most prolific season cause he had the chance to play for extensively with KDBs injury. Bellingham is a very talented player, but he's not a 10, especially compared to Foden. He's a box to box player who played the start of the season as a false 9 so people saw him scoring goals from midfield and assumed and lauded him as a 10. He's so combative it just makes sense to play him deeper in midfield. Trent's defending isn't his strength (it can be blown out of proportion but it is his weakness) and so putting him in the most all action, combative part of the pitch puts us at a disadvantage and Rice clearly isn't comfortable next to him and has to almost babysit him and we don't get the strengths of Trent's passing because he doesn't have the time he does from RB. Kane's tendency to drop in requires wingers to push on, so Saka needs to do that or allow Walker the overlap and we need pace on the other side so Gordon is the right choice and a forward thinking player. In years past, our defence was our strength so we relied on that and the tactics made sense. But our defence is weaker now and we should be going for the Liverpool or City 17/18 approach of attack and just hope to score more than they do. Sitting back won't work.

I do genuinely believe it's managerial. It's always been the case and until England gets a manager that suits an English Premier league style, maybe has more pedigree then being relegated at club level, there won't be success. Saying the squad is “a bit lacking” is ridiculous. Kane, Bellingham, Rice, Stones, Walker, Foden, Saka. That’s 7/11 of the starting lineup that can genuinely say are world class. You then have Palmer & Watkins who have 20 goals & 10 assists in the premier league this season. The tier below that of Trent, Bowen, Trippier, Shaw (if he ever gets fit) are VERY high level and Mainoo & Wharton are great young talents. The squad is STACKED! Absolutely no excuse

    To give an outsider prospective on things, it seems England are confused in every single aspect. The fans don’t know what they want, Southgate looks confused, and the players seem confused with the instructions. In my opinion you can’t expect to figure it out mid tournament. That’s what the qualifiers and friendlies are for. England just use them as tryouts instead of already having a squad set to gain chemistry together.

    England played the SAME in both games and had the exact same game plan for both games. Southgate has them playing for 1-0 wins when they should be playing for 3-0 smashings with the talent they have. they should be on the front foot just like Spain and Germany have been.

    England, compared to the talent they have, & had, haven't clicked for decades. The English might not want to admit this, but it must be a deeper reason than just the manager, even though I think he is a big reason. Is it the media? Expectations from fans? Culture? Lack of a clear football style/identity? Because England have had this same problem under lots of managers.

    I've been resigned to believing that we cannot keep possession of the ball & pass successfully in international football. In the Denmark game we were trying to play out from the back but were pressed so high we panicked & couldn't find a man. Eze came on & lost the ball tons trying to force it. Watkins stretched it immediately & Kane needs to be off at HT if he continues to play so deep. The least you expect is some pressing & running in behind from English players but this is over 20 years + of England player squads. We sadly will not have a better chance to win a trophy than we did in a home tournament in Euro 2020 in my lifetime. Prove me wrong England!!

    When Gareth fill's out his team sheet who is he building the attack around? I can't tell from watching. Is it Trent as a deep lying playmaker, is it Kane holding the ball up centrally for runners in behind, is it Bellingham as a CAM? It does not appear that anyone seems to know what style they are playing. Trent can't make long passes into the box if Kane is dropping to CM. Kane can't hold the ball up if he has no runners other than Saka off the right. Jude can't create if Kane and Foden are crowding the same space. At least in prior tournaments you could see that the attack revolved around Kane getting in the box and looking for crosses from Walker or Shaw or holding the ball up for runs from Sterling or Rashford. It was not pretty, but there was the outline of a system. Gareth does not know how to deploy these players. He brings off Kane and Trent, drops Jude deeper, then brings on players like Watkins and Bowen to make runs that would've suited TAA's passing or Kane's hold up play. Make it make sense.

    I don't think this group of England players are coping with the pressure of the expectation their overall level of talent has brought them. The spirit of recent years seeing themselves as underdogs can work well enough but it's a whole new level where they can be expected to give more. That shows a lack of leadership at all levels where players stop doing even the basics right and mentally retreat instead of pushing each other on. The lack of reaction in game tactically and individually is tragic.

    From at outside perspective just coming up with it on the spot rn. 1. Why play Trent in the midfield if you have no one supplying the runs he needs to be impactful? 2. You have game changers on the bench but the manager is too scared to upset the “starboys” you have in the starting 11. 3. Absolutely no tactics or any sense of identity as a team. Just send it long and hope someone makes something happen out of nothing. 4. Foden, Bellingham, Trent all playing out of position. 5. Manager is Below Average at best.

    Yes, Grealish had a bad club season. Was battling injuries & issues in his personal life. Regardless, he wasn't good. But Jack's game is tailormade for international football. Where his ability to hold up play, work rate, unique ability to draw fouls. Can win you the free kick, that makes the difference in a tough international fixture.
