@taz biscuit I can't answer for her but I can for myself in thinking the same thing. When you were a kid, have you ever played with your friends, pretending that you were characters from a cartoon or movie or TV show that you liked? I have and I always tried to say I was the character who looked most like me (for instance, out of the Disney princesses I was always Jasmine, because I looked for the one that kind of looked like me). Now, this feeling of wanting to see yourself in characters or people or possibilities doesn't really go away. It's human nature. So when like 90% (and I'm being generous here) of the media, and characters, and beautiful successful people on TV or movies or even famous on KZread are white, you sort of start internalizing that that's the only way to be and that you will never be like that. Even subconsciously you start thinking that being beautiful is being white. I'm latina. And when I was a teen I used to write novels. Except ALL of my characters were white. None were black. None were even mixed, which is the most common thing where I'm from. They were all blonde and red headed with blue eyes. So when I see someone saying that "Oh I'm glad to see successful black people" as I understand it is a recognition that "Oh, I can be like that too. This could be me." It may sound silly if you don't have the same experiences. If you're white you've probably seen a lot of successful white people in your life so that's just normal for you. But it isn't necessarily normal for others.

I agree with your notion taz biscuit. It shouldn't matter if they are Black. Who cares what race they are? French society doesn't obsess about race like Americans do. For me, it's just 3 beautiful and kind women sharing their experiences as foreigners living in a different country.

Ladies! It was a truly pleasant surprise coming across your charming video. The sister in the middle (who reminded me of Oprah's BFF, Gayle King) is holding it down!! I'm so glad that you all are taking advantage of your youth to travel. I made it my duty to do this because of my mother. when I was very young she would say to me "You are a citizen of the world" and encouraged me to have penpals. She died when I was 16 but just before then I asked her if she regretted having 5 children. She didn't of course but said she wished she had travelled more before becoming a wife and mother. There and then I decided, THAT is what I was going to do. My experiences have been rich because I never did the "tourist" thing. It was all about the culture! Just putting yourself in the spaces where the local people 'free-up" themselves is SOOooo rewarding! I've made life-long friends from those experiences. So Go On Girls! Grab those opportunities while you're young and the world isn't (as yet) totally f*%#^d-up!! One day I hope to come to France. This place, it's history, food, music and literature has always fascinated me. Hopefully y'all will still be there. Meanwhile, (as the old folks say in Tobago..."Walk Good!" :)

I just got back from a trip to Paris for the first time. French culture is definitely more formal than American culture in the sense that you have to say bonjour every single time you interact with someone in order to initiate even the most mundane tasks otherwise you'll be considered rude. It definitely took some time to get used to but after awhile, I actually kind of like it. It seems like French society is moreso motivated by respect for your fellow man rather than simply "I'm a customer, I have money so give me what I want."

I wish I'd have learnt French as a child. I was taught it in secondary (high) school, but wasn't serious in my studies. I envy people like Jodie Foster who go to schools prioritising foreign languages. I think to become fluent you really need to start very young. I've visited Paris numerous times via the Eurostar and would love to live there. You're so lucky!

  • @thaiswei4069

You don't need to start super young! I mean, you might not quite get the perfect accent and everything, but don't give up so soon. I learned english at around 13/15 years old. It just takes a bit more time when you're older because you have to "unlearn" the meaning of some words and reassign them. Try to watch stuff in French (no english subtitles!) And listen to french music and read french books. Write a diary in french, hop on a penpal site ! It's never too late to learn

I lived there for 3 years I was married to a beautiful French woman I'm from Los Angeles California I agree with just about everything you said that's bad about Paris but all of the good wipes out the bad yeah there's no sun going to the prefecture sucks anything administrative sucks but you're in France you're living in Paris and somehow that makes it all doable. Sitting in a cafe watching all the tourist and all the parisians walked by while you're sipping a glass of wine having a little cheese a croissant it's hard to beat that I used to enjoy sitting at cafes and watching people walk by I always wondered when I first arrived why there were so many people at these cafes and why the parisians love to do this but I see it and I love to do it and nothing beats French baguette.

Luckily, the weather was absolutely amazing when I went, but it was incredibly hot, and many places had no air conditioning 🤔🤔🤔 I was completely caught of guard with the heat, and I'm from South Louisiana. That's probably the reason why I couldn't really appreciate the food, but, the croissants and palmiers were amazing! I love the walkability of the city amd loved how there were literally hundreds of ppl gathered around the river for picnics/ dinner parties. I was also shocked that it didn't get dark until after 10pm. Paris is life!!!

Yes! A new video! I love seeing you guys in a different location and trying new things. I completely agree with Hanna when you talk about hating smoking. It's been a big adjustment for me as well here in Japan. Although you don't happen upon it a lot on the streets and there are smoking rooms and areas in the main station, you are allowed to smoke in the restaurants here and me being a foodie like you, it's such a turn off. I feel like it changes the way I experience the food because I have the smell of cigarette smoke wafting through the air. So I definitely see what you mean about that! Question: When you mention apparels, are you referring to clothing or does that encompass home decor or the general Parisian aesthetic? I'd love to see what that looks like! I'm also interested in seeing what Maya had to say about the social benefits of living in Paris. The rain interrupted her :( Anyway, great video! Looking forward to the next one! ;)

Oh, people smoking in restaurants is just horrible. Ah! Sutanya was talking about "apéro" and that she will show how she prepares one for you guys soon :) We had so much more to share about the positive aspects about living here so we might talk more about this in coming episodes! Thank you so much for the support!

I hear you on that "no sense of urgency". I follow another KZreadr 'I love Paris". She films people in the streets of Paris and France's coastal towns following fashion. One video she did the streets of L.A. fashion. The first thing I noticed was the difference in gait speed. American women and men have a much faster clip when they walk. I think Americans are so programmed to be productive and have that "get er done" attitude that we expect people in Europe to get on it and get with the program, but it's just not how things are done over there!!! I've been to Paris and other parts of France. It is a really beautiful and culturally rich city. Glad you all are enjoying life in Paris. What a great experience to have!!

Cool video ladies! The cinematography is well done as it sets the ambiance. The biggest one out of the video that resonated for me was the smoking bit. It is amazing that there are still public places (restaurants, etc.) in Paris where folks can smoke inside. Beurk! :-D

Great video ladies, very interesting to hear all three of your perspectives. I've been to Paris twice (only for 3 days each time) but I absolutely love it. The main thing I like is the sense of community and people not rushing around like they do in America. I would love to live there but like you I don't speak French. I was wondering how difficult it would be for me to find work or to live there in general as an English speaker. Ps. I would definitely be open to learning French but I would want to do it immersively instead of trying to do it at home where everyone speaks English.
