What We Discovered About the Paris Opera Palais Garnier

In this Paris vlog we tour the Paris Garnier (Palais Garnier or Opera Garnier) which was the inspiration for the PHANTOM OF THE OPERA. Mystery writer Gaston Leroux's most famous creation is "The Phantom of the Opera." The novel was a celebration of a particular city, Paris France, and a particular building, the Paris Garnier Opera House. When we visited Paris, it was a must see attraction for us and we recommend that you put it on your itinerary for your own trip. We take you on a tour of the Palais Garnier and tell you the story of how it inspired "The Phantom of the Opera."

❓ Answer to the trivia question at the end of the video: On May 20, 1896, at exactly 8:57 p.m., during a performance of the opera Helle', two 360 kg (about 792 lbs. each) counterweights fell from the chandelier above the audience, which killed one spectator and injured many others. The chandelier was supported by a system of counterweights that insured the fixture's attachment to the ceiling. The chandelier was connected to weights by "wrist-width" steel cables. While they were supposed to be kept insulated from the cables, electrical wires ran alongside to a power source. "Forensic specialists at the time speculated that, based on the distinctive break in the cables, one of these wires came in contact with the two cables, short-circuited the system, and generated enough heat to melt through the steel of the cables." Awesome video! Do you have to do the guided tour to access the auditorium or can you access it on your own without a guide?

Thanks! Glad you’re coming along with us. No, you don’t have to do a guided tour and can access it in your own. We did that ourselves and got the audio guide, which we enjoyed a lot. Have fun!!

Hey there!! Thanks for the comment!! We loved the self-guided tour as there are a lot of people and we liked having our own pace and ability to hear through our headphones. It’s a beautiful place, and being able to do your own thing really was our preference. When are you planning to be there? Let us know what you think. So glad to have you coming along with us:)
