What we can learn from Walmart: A KEY lesson in INVENTORY

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

I'm not promoting Walmart today! But I do think there is an awesome lesson about managing inventory that we can learn from them! How much can WE manage? And what do we do with the stuff that isn't "selling"? Let's talk about that today!

This is, in a nutshell, the concept of the sunk cost. Most people don't get it but once they do, there's no looking back. Bottom line - the money is spent and you can't get it back, therefore, the only sane thing to do is to cut your losses and move on. Changed my life. ~ Lisa

When my mother died and then years later, my father, my siblings and I had to sift through a lifetime of stuff and figure out what to do with it all. It took months. Ever since, I promised myself that i would minimize my own things so that, should i die tomorrow, my boys would not have as much of a chore to deal with. Do i want someone i love to pick up clothes off the floor, or have to sort through drawers and boxes of unnecessary junk? I keep the house tidy and more minimal now, to help them later.

We have too much inventory and our container is too small. Just a heads up for anyone interested in borrowing things... make sure the "terms" are clear in the beginning of the exchange! When my daughter was a baby, my sister in law "gave" me a bunch of her girls' things. I went through it all, and kept the things I thought I would need, and gave away the things I didn't. Then, years later, she was pregnant again and asked for her things back!! I didn't realize she just wanted me to "borrow" the things, not keep them! Eek! I felt horrible, because I had given away a bunch. Anyway, just a tip to clearly specify if things are being "given" or "lended"!! :)

  • @cathrino

That is a great advice. I struggle a little bit with he fact of borrowing, because things get used, they break, people get upset,... Also, if I choose to live with less, but expect others not to, so I can borrow it from them, that doesn't seem quiet fair. BUT, maybe instead of borrowing, you and your neighbor could go in on something together. My husband got invited to use an ice house from his friend Charlie. Charlie owns this ice house with two other friends. They take turns, or share it. Not every person needs to own one. I think there are many things like that. But even with that, it's important to have clear "terms". 😀

Dawn, I love you and THANK YOU! You are the first person who has broken the messy chains that have bound me for decades. That means I failed at FlyLady, Messies An., The side-tracked Home Ex, More Hours in my Day, etc. You have truly changed my life sharing your simplified tips that work if you are a messy person or not.. I tam using all the tips you and Dianna offer, but it was actually a comment Tom made that made me feel this could work for me. You were telling that Tom didn't really notice when you started simplifying and He said that was because "it read the same." That made me feel like I could try this and my husband would never know if I failed yet again. I started downsizing storage spaces first. It was the pandemic so I used just giving the excess away for free out by the road and it was totally worth it. I kept repeating the process, but the house read just the same when he would come in (chaos). I kept working and also had motivation of having a secret and knowing that I was getting closer and closer to the finish line - even though he never even knew when I started. At last with a small inventory - I started arraigning room by room. He did notice that but of course, (after 28 years of messy), I'm sure he thought it couldn't last. I am not bringing anything but consumables into the house. It is lasting. :) He keeps asking me - what happened???? :) I am so proud to tell you my story.

Seriously. I discovered you about six months ago, and hearing you refer to stuff as inventory and stuff you had to mange really clicked with me and gave me an “A-ha!” moment. My house is so full of stuff and so chaotic with 3 kids that I just never even want to be home. I’ve been in a deep depression for a couple years and am medicated for anxiety. When I heard you talk about inventory in one of your older videos, I realized that that’s the root of a lot of my issues. I’m smothering I junk that I don’t need. I’ve been decluttering since then, and it’s been a slow process with the kids and a job (and a husband who keeps bringing random junk home lol), but I’m finally getting to a point where I can breathe a little easier. So, thank you for that 😊

I love how minimalism has reduced our more permanent household goods significantly. When it comes to consumables like groceries or toilet paper, our family is not minimal. Every family has to find their own comfort level, but we are fine to fill the designated spaces for those consumable items. We have a space boundary that I work within, but I still like to stock up on sales of things we use up. And twice a year I do a pantry challenge, using up what we have as a reset. So in our case, having more in stock does not lead to food waste. With the uncertain times we are living in, I’m fine to have some consumables well stocked. Toilet paper supply in March showed us that you can’t always count on what you need at the store to be there the day that you need it. We went to our regular store and also found no fresh meat and I was really glad I had some at home in the freezer. Where we live, we have plenty of stores nearby but if our family needs to quarantine again, I’d like enough on hand to make good meals for several days. But the pandemic has also been freeing (in our situation), with the realization we don’t need more clothes, housewares, furniture, etc.

Consumables we use every day bought in bulk or on sale and savings galore! However, for the rest of “stuff” I reeeeely like the approach she shares on this channel! I never worried about toilet paper or meat to eat during the Pandemic. If I needed too (which I didn't) I could of used Kleenex, wet wipes, or paper towels, etc. Meat is not something that is a requirement. The more red meat we eat the greater our risk of heart disease and stroke. More people are low on fiber than will ever be on protein. People can get protein from veggies. I got off topic 🤣😂. I think your idea is great because it works for you and your family!

My whole perspective has shifted about how much of my life I’m willing to give up for things. Working for the money to buy them, shopping, cleaning, finding storage, and ultimately disposing of them. So I decided to use a small space in the basement, but in order to avoid having to buy doubles or not knowing what I have, so I have a list and everytime I take something out it gets scratched out of my INVENTORY and is used. When I make my shopping list I just restock what is NECESSARY.

It happened about 3 weeks after I cleaned out my kitchen, minimized and organized what I had. then in the last 3 weeks I realized that I had a crazy amount of food in my house at one time and that we have an Aldi 5 minutes away. D.U.M.B!!! To give myself a headache to store organize and take a long inventory each week when I can just buy what I need and USE it! :) Thanks for all that you contribute!!

I needed a fan for about 2 wks and that was all. I knew I didn't want to buy one (even though they aren't expensive) so I borrowed one from a friend. That way I wouldn't have to store it! I want to add that I gave her a gift card when I returned the fan to her just to show appreciation. Yes, the gift card cost more than the fan. But the idea was to NOT have to store the fan if I bought one! :)

Thanks, Dawn! Good message! I wanted to mention that you inspired me to try intermittent fasting in the form of restricted eating hours. I’ve never been able to stick to the goal of not eating past 7pm, but this mind shift has been pretty easy for me! I started with eating 8:30am to 6:30pm, and now I’m doing 9am to 6pm. I haven’t changed what I’m eating, but that will be the next goal. I can tell I’ve lost some weight, and I’m snacking less between meals or not at all. I used to be so tired after work that I would often need a nap, but I don’t struggle with that any more! I am about 170 pounds overweight, and am thankful to have found something I’ve been able to stick with so well! Thanks, Dawn, for inspiring me in so many areas of my life!

Love the concept of borrowing instead of buying! But sometimes it can be uncomfortable asking neighbors or family members to borrow their things, so there's also the option of renting! Think outdoor tools like wood splitters, hole diggers, etc. You rent for the day, then return, no hassle with storing it or maintanence, etc. Just use it and return it! This excites me for some reason! ;)

Hey! I know this comment is more related to other videos... I’ve been catching up and loving your channel the past month! It’s helped so much! I also wanted to let you know, some of your conversations about keeping a home clean for your husband might not be well received because there are many out there with husbands quite different from Tom and what you’re used to. My sweet husband was basically blind to all responsibilities at home for years. Seriously. Finances, yard work, trash, car maintenance, holiday/family events, kids clothing and hygiene needs, dr appointments.... it wasn’t until I made a list of every possible thing it takes to run a home and family and asked him to confirm what he felt he took responsibility for, that his eyes opened up. And we both work full time. Just wanted to let you know that there really are women out there, that are trying to do it all for their families and husband’s, and maybe need to be directed that this advice (to create a peaceful/clean home) is not necessarily going to solve the arguments regarding house chores if 1 person is truly doing 95% of the home & family management work. I appreciate all you and your family put out into the world through this channel! Just wanted to give another perspective. God bless!

The key to all of what I have been learning since signing on and also doing the "Take back" series was we live in a container and within that container is the places we store our items (today was about our inventory) This was something I have struggled with in 2 areas my makeup and art supplies. These are 2 things I enjoyed. So yesterday as i begin the real purge (some of my makeup was 5-10 years old and I would not let go) ran out of room years ago and just kept adding container to house it...I got rid of 85-90% of my make up and how did I do it, I put most of it into Quarantine. Since I retired i do simple makeup and it fits into one container. I am now applying the same thing to my art supplies (these go back years ) and in this past year I gave away at least 50% and still have too much. I know what I really like to do and the rest I am donating to my ex-co worker who teaches Sunday School and they love the supplies i gave them last year and now I have another load to give them. When you find a "good cause" that helps me to let go of the guilt and then it is not money wasted You often suggest Market Place but think about Women's shelters (if you have new clothing and it is work appropriate), I also think I could donate to a senior center my art supplies. Thanks Dawn this Walmart story is something we can relate to and also learn not to guilt myself for mistakes.

Art supplies - especially high quality - retains most of its value on the secondary market. A worthy cause may appreciate the money raised by a sale of your supplies more than the supplies itself. Especially stuff like oil paints or canvases ... unless it's simple arts and crafts, resell it to artists who need the discount.

I had my first realization of "inventory" when I started college, although I wouldn't' have been able to explain it that way. Growing up, my room was always messy, and even after cleaning it wouldn't take long to be messy again. My dorm room only had the basics, clothes, books, etc. I enjoyed keeping things tidy and organized. The challenge is doing that with kids and a busy life. I found your channel this past summer, and your description of inventory helped me further simplify. I've also noticed that if I hang on to things I've bought but I'm not using, I'm more likely to make the same mistake again. (Because in my head, I still think I'm going to use it- someday.) If I acknowledge the mistake and give it away or donate it, I'm less likely to make the same mistake again.

But we could have done way better.... we just started to sell our baby gear and it is nice to see that there are people who can use the stuff. I really like your approach with managig inventory. It helps me a lot. We are still in the process of decluttering our house. Today my hubby drove to the recycling center again with a car full of unusuable stuff. Even the kids start to declutter. They decided to let go of some toys very easily when we asked them. I was surprised but it showed me that they observe how we are doing.

Yes I agree with this. There are tons of videos on KZread with people showing how they decluttered their kitchen or clothing, etc, but Dawn (and Joshua Becker) have made the most difference to me in rethinking how I want to live.

I have never though like that, I was the inventory manager for years in a big company and now I am in charge of the logistics department in smaller one, but never though to run my house as I do my job. I am going try to do my grocery shopping as I do ordering stock for the company I work. I will have to do some previous work but then it may work. Grocery shopping it is my problem as home. My family may think I losing my mind.

WOW I too had to manage inventory at work, we did not have a storage issue but I could not run out of certain supplies and that was a constant. What i got from that is when to buy and when to not buy. I struggle with my "panty" and now i know that I have way too much and I live across the street from Safeway LOL, They can store my pantry for me and only keep bare essentials on hand.

This video seriously helped me see why I've been beating myself up for YEARS. I always wondered how I could be so organized but things always feel so out of control. I've been downsizing for a while now, but always felt like there was something wrong with me. The problem isn't with my organizational skills, it's saying NO to all this excess stuff that is stressing me out. I put her lesson into a formula: Less Inventory + Organization = Peace Thank you, Dawn! I agree with Christen Jones - it should be the very first video someone should watch before decluttering.

This video has been very helpful. I don't want my house to become a warehouse for wal mart , hobby lobby , home depot or any other store. I just keep only what is actually used and keep home decor down to a minimum. This just made decluttering so much more easier and letting go was no longer a major emotional battle. Hobbies no longer take over my house. If repairs have to be done that require expensive tools,, it's best to call someone to do it instead of my husband doing the repair which is once in a lifetime and the garage or backyard ends up with a lot tools that are never used again.. We just have to accept that we are not Master carpenters , electricians,, plumbers ets.and it allows someone else to earn a living doing what they are experts at. I don't have spend all that money on tools and in the process make a lot mistakes.that just end up costing us more . Thank you Dawn,, Cass, and Dana. Enjoying this new found freedom.

Dawn, the biggest reason I’m even posting this is because I want to thank you if u ever get to read this. I can’t imagine how you keep up with these comments. But after I send this, because of you I am getting up and going extreme. I’ve been watch ure videos and u are just amazing. Pure beautiful heart. I’m the same. I’m fighting for my kids because I was misdiagnosed and got addicted to pills. It went one for about 8 years. I was with my ex 14 yrs. we have three kids and I lost him. I had an opportunity to get clean and no one thought I would. I left and did it at a friends house cuz I didn’t want my kids bullied for their mom being in rehab. I lost myself but never them. I love the way u raise them. Rn my mom turned on me cuz she controlled me my whole life and won’t speak to me cuz I spoke to my biological dad. She’s the one who turned my husband against me and most my everyone else. I had help moving half a house when he decided he was moving back in with his parents and it’s been taking up the house I’m in. It’s memories and my life. But lately things have been going a little better with the custody. I spend a lot of time with them. And that’s what keeps me driven. Your declutter videos wouldn’t make me fell so excited to do this. It resonates with everything im going thru with all areas of my life. I just want to give thanks. 🙏🏼

My 17 year old has been giving me a hard time because I got rid of big things like old vans, a trailer and a campers.... he wishes I would have kept them but I told him we don’t have the space! We live in town so we don’t have room to store extra stuff.

Hi Dawn. Thanks for your videos. I wish I had this concept when I was a working mom raising my kids. So freeing. I want my house to be a home, not a storage facility. But it is something I am even finding useful now as my kids are each graduating college. We are in a state of transition and I am getting rid of sports equipment, school related items, etc. If we no longer have a use for it - I want it out. As they move out - I have them go through their things and purge what they don't want.. I am finding this younger generation does not want to be burdened with stuff especially paper items like photos and momentos. If they really want to "keep" it - they will take a digital picture and let go of the items. We will always have the memories of the experience. I also want a simple cleaning routine - which is more achievable with less stuff to clean! I love that you and other minimalism moms I watch are confident and express that minimalism should be whatever you want it to be. Just simplify to a level that gives you more life and joy in your day!

Thank you! Now I have a better idea of inventory. And inventory doesn't just have to be material things, skills can be a great trap for gathering clutter. Out sourcing a few tasks removes tons of equipment, supplies and waste from your home (unless your lawn care folks have to use your own lawn mower, or your house keeper has to use your vacuum cleaner, etc.)

I have been realizing a lot about my wardrobe. Ty to you and Erica Lucas. I’m taking in to consideration of what colors I like on myself. When I get a complement on what I’m wearing or if someone says that color looks good on you. ❣️I remember that when buying myself clothes. I have given a lot of clothes away. Now I pick and choose what I want. Not what’s on sale. Ty

For a long time I was upset with my accumulation of things, and I was trying to find a solution among the innumerable contents on minimalism that exist on social networks. But I tried again and again following their advice and immediately gave up because the ideas they defended didn't work for me in the end because they were too frivolous or superficial. I've finally found you a few weeks ago and I finally see the practical side and I'm beginning to understand the philosophy of minimalism that does agree with my personality. Thank you very much for your advice and I will continue with you

You articulated this so well!!! I knew I had this problem with buying extras and storing too much but I could never really explain it. My husband only buys things when he needs it and he does run out of things but he is such a minimalist and it seems less stressful sometimes to live like him, with less inventory. He also purges a lot easier than me bc he doesn’t have that much to begin with. 🤯🤯🤯 This was such a helpful video about explaining the pros of downsizing and making more conscious choices about buying/storing less.

In New Zealand we have toy library so we go and borrow a high end item or items like other toys, books and baby swings etc we cannot afford and return it. Toys in New Zealand are very expensive compared to usa. I had a toy that cost $280. In nz. It cost $80. In the USA. I was sooo lucky to get it for $2.50 in America. Very rare if I found that in nz in a used thrifty shop. People tend to pass on goods or sell on line to recap some $$

Where I live there is a DIY center in the public library for lending tools and commonly needed items like wedding cake tiered pans, sewing machines, craft tools, wheelbarrows, shovels... They also hold classes on how to do the jobs for which these tools are used - such as sewing or installing wood/laminate floors. All of the tools needed for one Scout's Eagle project were borrowed from the DIY center - 4 wheelbarrows, shovels, metal rakes, hammers, etc. It's a big plus for those with small homes and little storage - like the once or twice a year a rake is needed.

LOVE THIS. I have come across so many organizational videos trying to be the next smartest hack - because no ones original organizing ideas stay implemented - but they're just skipping over the bigger problem... It's not that we aren't good at organizing, but we have too much stuff TO organize!! So thankful for all of these principles!

I love the little neighborhood libraries where you can borrow and donate books! In our town many folks in need check them for other things, so it's a great place to donate small items like mini soaps and travel size items. Non perishable foods that can be consumed w/o cooking are good too.

Until yesterday, I didn’t understand what you meant about “managing inventory.” Some days, I wake up with the thought that I need to get rid of a particular item. It could be an item in the garage, or a pair of shoes in the closet… Yesterday, it was our electric can opener. I had put that in the garage along time ago. We might not have used it for a couple of years. I’ve been using a handheld one. I kept it because I was worried about my arthritis, but they have so many easier to use inventions now. The thought of using that Hamilton Beach can opener, wasn’t attractive to me. So I’m guessing that somehow, my brain keeps track of what we own. Because I never have found i have problems finding things. I’m very organized. Come to think of it, I went to dollar tree 2018 and got all those shelving units because I needed to have more space before! Thanks for your awesome tips
