There’s several of these reconstructed watch towers in Germany along the Rhine. When I was a young boy my dad was stationed in the Rhineland and I got to visit at least one of these.

Makes me nostalgic for my own days in the army. The guard watches, the small cities we would make out of a bivouac site, endless poker games in the barracks, sitting around at a range nibbling on rations, even the simple transition from full kit to t shirts and soft caps when we have to load crates or something. Lots of people say that war never changes, but I think for soldiers it’s the peace that never changes.

That's been my experience as well. Well said and described.

For anyone intersted in visiting the Limes region, I highly recommend a daytrip to the Saalburg. It's a UNESCO World Heritage site as the most complete reconstruction of a Roman Cohort fort in Germany. It features a fascinating museum, traditional Roman breadmaking and a fantastic restaurant where you can try out actual Roman recipes. The Parthian chicken and Lucanian sausages are particularly delicious! Greetings from Germany.

Damals mussten sie das Asafoetida aus Parthien über die Seidenstraße beziehen, heute hat das jeder Gewürzgroßmarkt. 13,90€ für ein Hauptgericht find ich OK, aber keine Ahnung, wieviel das in Sesterzen ist. Apicius hat leider nur das Rezept überliefert, keine Kassenbons 😄

@@HT8008S Concerning Roman stuff, there is a lot in the area. Trier with its famous Porta Nigra is always worth a visit, it's the oldest German city founded by the Romans to convince the Germans how great the Roman lifestyle was. A bit closer to the Saalburg, the "Museum of Ancient Seafaring" in Mainz is also pretty interesting. It features several reconstructions of Roman ships that were found in surprisingly good condition in the 1980s. Further north in Kalkriese, there's the "Varusschlacht-Museum" about the battle of Teutoburg forest. Teutoburg forest, while not the actual site of the battle, has the "Hermannsdenkmal", a pretty impressive statue of Arminius. But honestly, almost every slightly larger town in the area probably has a Roman past and will have some local archaeological finds in the town museum.

This content is so engaging! The partnership with Imperium Romanum has really elevated the most recent content. I loved your looks at everyday Roman life such as justice, criminal investigation, diet, travel, e.t.c. The little skit with the stop and search of the smugglers is the perfect example of visual media that live-action actors lends itself to! Can't wait to see more 🙂

imperium romanum sounds so badass

an rpg drama in the style of KCD solely focused on peacetime frontier defense and duties would be so awesome, especially if it's made with it's own storyline, for example, just before and during a germanic invasion(like the cumans in KCD), or if it's set during the late empire - hunnic, gothic etc., would be soooo cool

What is remarkable to me is how similar this system is to the great wall of China. The Roman network was built through deep forests, so wood was a practical and logical construction material. While in China their defensive network sometimes spanned mountains and open plains, so stone was a more rational choice. Both system were essentially a network of communication using towers and roads as a early warning system for barbarian invasion. It's just fascinating to me how two very different but powerful empires on opposite sides of the globe came to similar conclusions and defensive measures. I think both the Romans and ancient Chinese would have had a huge amount of respect and mutual admiration for each others civilizations.

Out in the open plains and desert leaning areas, the Chinese actually used rammed earth and compacted clay to create the walls, such as in the far west of the country. It's just the the majority of these walls have fallen to the decay of time and mostly resemble nothing more than a small hill or ridge running across the landscape.

You know I've always watched these types of documentaries even from all the way back when the history channel used to actually show history. Having joined the military myself now, it's super interesting to see that pretty much nothing about being a soldier has changed in thousands of years.

The life of a soldier has never changed...Same thing happened in Afghanistan. We had guard outposts, went on patrols and the locals would come to the commanders with their grievances and if possible the commanders would try to solve the issues before they escalated into bigger problems.

The new reenactment format is quite intuitive and immersive to me. Keep up the great work, folks.

This format does so much to give life to these stories, and humanizes these peoples in a way that broad stroke narration fail to capture. Loving the content and the contribution of Imperium Romana, hope to see more!

The interesting thing about the lorica segmentata is that at the time of it's introduction it was considered cheaper in man hours to produce than chainmail. At the time for Rome money was not a problem but having enough artisans capable of producing the requisite armor for the legions was a huge problem. The lorica segmentata was faster to produce than chainmail and the requisite skill level for both were similar. The big difference between both armors is that you needed better base materials for the lorica segmentata than you did for chainmail.

the reason why lorica hamata was still favoured later on was that, while lorica segmentata is cheaper to make, lorica hamata was cheaper to standardize, repair and maintain. you see a lorica segmentata (as well as any sort of plate armour) has to be tailored specifically to the wearers body (the waist area being especially important) to be both effective and comfortable, which also means that the different plates that make up a lorica segmentata have shapes unique to that particular set, a damaged plate would have had to be recreated by a blacksmith and the armour of a retired or deceased soldier could not be easily fitted to someone else. a lorica hamata on the other hand does not need to be as well tailored, since you can tighten it to the wearers waist with a belt. repairs are also easier since rings and rivets could be standardized, allowing the legion to carry a supply of spare parts on campaign.

​@@windhelmguard5295 since the legionaires had to pay for their armor up front, and then pay to maintain their armor, it's quite likely that the contubernes would provide advice regarding which armor was more affordable vs which was superior in combat, an important consideration for any auxiliary. The chain mail might be more maintainable by an individual soldier or his group thus saving money, but the fitted armor would more likely require the services of a busy legion armorer....

I can't put into words how amazing this content is. This is how you "teach" history, by making people forget they are being thought while still providing an amazing perspective of history, great job to everyone who worked on this!

Many thanks, Invicta; this format is excellent! The auxiliary donning his armor (02:29) was very interesting, as was the view of the watchtower and the depictions of the clothing worn by the people of that time and place. Hopefully, it will be possible to produce and present more videos like this.

Love this format, it highlights the more mundane daylife of the soldier's duty and his interaction with locals, which is interesting, since soldiers didn't spend most of their duty fighting, contrary to the biased depiction we have from mainstream media. As for the production aspect, this is top notch. The format makes it very professional and instructive, for the filmed part is perfectly complemented with the narration.

Seeing the auxillary put everything on reminds me of change parades when I was in the army. Basically when the commanders want to haze us they tell us to put everything on/off within a certain time frame, and they would punish us if we failed to meet the timing. Sometimes with weird clothing/equipment combinations too.

The similarity to the security operations in Afghanistan and iraq that I participated in are very striking. Everybody thinks its all firefights and calling airstrikes, but more often than not you were manning a post, occaisionally catching drug smugglers, and having locals pester you about some small local issue.

Damn. Pairing Invicta’s knowledge and storytelling with Imperium Romanum’s detailed reenactment is the recipe for greatness. I hope to be witnessing the start of a new era for Invicta!

Having stood guard duty in the depths of a German winter, I can tell you that standing duty in an elevated tower meant that you were going to freeze your nadgers off. For soldiers from more southerly latitudes it must have been hell on Earth.

If I remember correctly, by the time of the Empire, a majority of soldiers would serve relatively close to their place of recruitment. So a majority of legionnaires from the Rhine frontier would be from Gaul, Rhaetia or Noricum

This was wonderful! I would have loved to see a bit more information though. I think a great opportunity would be things like, "what's the schedule like", "What'd they eat?" and "What's the watchtower actually have in it?". Even things like "How many people were actually at a watchtower at once?" is stuff I don't know and would have loved to find out. Such a engaging video though! And so amazingly informative!

This is really cool. I do wish we got a bit more about what they would eat and how they would stay in shape on duty, or what shifts may have looked like, as well as learning how the towers were supplied themselves. I imagine there would have been a system of logging food so that if something were to run short the next group to come in would bring a box or sack of whatever was running low and take the empty things back. Understandably we might not have any sort costing accounts of such things, but I think some of that could be professionally inferred.

I'm loving the day-to-day stuff like this. Do you have enough sources to talk about the day-to-day of a Roman governor? I believe it was your How Did Rome Maintain Peace in the Provinces? video that made me curious about the zoomed-in view of what they got up to all of the time.

I love this fascinating reproduction historic docudrama. I've always wondered how the legionaries lived and coped with daily lives in home base fortresses, stationed in fortlets, watchtowers, and daily marching camps. As spoken in the docudrama, 99% of the time was watching the grass grow and the remaining 1% involved in dealing with incidents like banditry, trespassers, civilian complaints, et al. The unlucky legionnaires who are in the wrong place at the wrong time get caught up confronting a major Germanic raid or even an invasion. Then all sh*t goes to hell. If a legionary recruit was lucky, he might have entered the legions during a time of prolonged peace. His only scary times would be confronting bandits, highwaymen, thieves, smugglers, criminals, et al. It is possible he might have had to deal with small groups of bandits requiring him to fight. But he would face the high risks of battle with barbarian invasion or incursion. The new legionary might spend his whole 20 year enlistment in relative peace before retirement, probably electing to remain at his last duty station with his local, native wife and children, taking the parcel of land offered to farm or else the lump sum retirement to start a small, mom-and-pop business.

Now that’s legioning.

I've always wondered what guard duty was like for romans along the Hadrian's walls, I've seen the garrisons, I've seen the wall and the views are both melancholic and breath-taking, though I imagine if you are keeping barbarians out a bit different

Given that most of the Germanic chiefdoms on the border with Rome were friendly, vassals, or partially Romanized, those outposts were more likely to be used to collect customs tolls than to stage military operations. The clearly delineated map of the Empire you always see in books is simplistic. The borders were always blurry.

Yes modern Europe wasn't defined as it is today back then, but that doesn't change the fact that we now consider the ancestors who inhabited modern day Europe in Roman times to be European ancestors, and in that sense yes acient Romans were absolutely European. To say otherwise is just more post-modernist relativist bullshit.

I'm loving the reenactment acting, makes me feel I'm there, living as a disgruntled and insanely bored centurion on CQ duty. It adds a different perspective into the lives of ordinary soldiers, whereas other material seems more like a documentary.
