The most impactful part of Salem for me was the first execution. The suddenness in which it happens, the special animation that plays, the feeling that the antagonist has made you for a fool and is clearly not an enemy to be taken lightly, it was awesome. The rest of the story was indeed frustrating but i don't blame the writers, its clear that it was left unfinished. It obvious from the suddenness that she disappears, only to reappears right after that there was an entire "Mash is going to be executed" chapter there are some point that was entirely cut out.

I like to think Salem was a "what if the writer tried to emulate Lovecraft's style of horror, with some bumps here and there." It worked well for the most part and despite the writers being different for any outer god story after, Salem set a precedent for the next stories to improve on.

not gonna lie, i would love to see an anime of Salem because i agree that the fights add F* nothing in game, but animating those fights showing the servants struggle? boy that would be cool. I also like how the servants you brought all play into some lovecraftian troupe character, it feels like a Call of chtullhu rpg party.

As a huge Lovecraft fan I have to say I am kind of disappointed with how little the characters are used in FGO. I love Abby but Lavinia probably should have been the one to become the Foreigner especially since she actually has a connection to Yog Sothoth. Also, not making Randolph Carter a servant is a huge missed opportunity given what an interesting character he is in the mythos and all the potential he has. I am keeping my fingers crossed that they might add Abdul Alhazred in as a Caster in the future, or maybe even Asenath Waite since Lovecraft did TypeMoon’s job for them and genderbent her already.

The only bad part about him was a lack of relevance when he was alive or his death being simply "another thing that happened" Maybe it would've been good having him with a plot twist revealing him as a good guy despite being like that but still the character deserved a little more of something He has an important role at the start but when the story is changing direction he's relegated to the sidelines until he dies

I like to think that Mephy's brief interruption in the story wasn't as bad as everyone made it out to be, but only because of the small detail he dropped off hand, that I haven't seen anyone talk about, and that is the date this was all happening, April 30th, or known by its other name, Walpurgisnacht, a pagan holiday celebrated by witches for being the night where rituals and magic being at their highest power and efficacy (I don't remember if that has other requirements like lunar phases). It's also stated that Mephy has a wide interpretation as to what he defines as a hellscape too; in both Ruler Jeanne's interludes, he makes a constant appearance as the antagonist, which at the end, spoilers, reveals he is there because she's actually torturing herself for wishing for wanting to be saved from her execution even though, to her, it was the thing that she felt was proof of her loyalty to God (this also resulted in the re-appearance of "Dark Jeanne" as a justification for Jalter, as we know her now) In essence, Mephy appears to those who torture themselves, as when he appears in Salem, for whatever reason, we the Master, are the only ones that can see him. Wonder why that could be, 5 lostbelts after the fact... This incident, and the others before it, occurred all just over a 4 month period after we defeated Goetia and restored humanity.

Mephistopheles showing up here was BRILLIANT. His appearance - and the fact nobody else can see him - shows that we, the MC, the savior of humanity, are starting to lose touch with reality because of the tension and horror we have witnessed here. It’s the wake-up call that the madness Lovecraft is so famous for is starting to deep in, and thus actually helps us stave it off for longer.

Salem, to me, was incredibly frustrating and drained my sanity. And that’s why I fucking love it. This story of Eldritch proportions inspired by some of the most paranoia filled times of human history perfectly emulates the feeling of anxiety and tension that you get from those situations and makes you keep reading the story hoping to find some answer to your sudden insanity. The story may not be the most masterfully written narrative but in terms of world building and general atmosphere, it’s a perfect work of fiction

The most memorable fights (outside of the fight with Abby and the the first against Ghouls) are the fights as parts of the plays. And that was an ingenious way of having those fights (which admittedly are padding ...) without shoehorning an unnecessary attack by something or needless fetch quest etc. in there. Otherwise to me the key how Abby is used in Salem is Lavinia and her relationship to her. It is more about figuring what Lavinia is doing and why than about Abby having agency in the story - and that is OK for me. To put it bluntly: it is an romantic (non-sexual) two girl relationship with Abby as the apocalypse maiden and damsel on a larger scale. Salem also gets additional background atmosphere points for how t portraits the now soon upcoming shut-down of Chaldea and makes that bitter-sweet sense of finality to "the old age" palatable. (Plus it has Circe and that makes it immediately better, that but of waifu-ism must be allowed to me; "I am not a witch; I am the the queen witch!".)

One of the only times i really remember it coming into play was when Lakishmi Bai first saw Sherlock and i thought of shit she’s actively not going to be our ally because it looks like we’re allied with a British man and then it was just briefly swept under the rug right after I’m like you lived your life fighting for the rights of your people against British colonialism I expected a more Penth reaction than a tacit Boudica one

So either the therapist needs Servant bodyguards, potentially violating the confidentiality, or the therapist needs to be a Servant. Uh, no, that's not at all accurate to Lakshmi Bai's history. She was not particularly inclined to rebel against the British, only did because of an association with a massacre against some British officers, wives, and children, that she may not have actually been involved with at all, which led to the Governor General not granting her support against the British East India Company's attempt to annex Jhansi, and fought against the British for about *one* year. She never betrayed the British; circumstances eventually forced her to believe that the British betrayed her. Lakshmi Bai not helping the world-saving squad because of a British *civilian* makes no sense. She'd have more of a beef with Artoria than Sherlock.

Surprised you never brought up the play sections. I personally found them to be a nice way to provide a bit of break from the tension while allowing us to fight with non-gimped Servants for a while. The fight against the Jeannes that devolved into some quasi-three little pigs spoof stands out to me for just how bizarre it was. Not to mention, they also used that for when you had to defend Mata Hari in trial. Then again, I guess that's more of a gameplay thing and not really story-relevant (one of these plays can only be accessed after you beat the main story, even). Just a thing that also stands out to me alongside some of the more tense moments.

The biggest problem I had with Salem was probably the disconnect you pointed out between how weak we're supposed to be and how we still fought alright. The instant Hopkins dared to touch one of my Servants I was ready to crack skulls, and having the narrative go on about how bad and idea that was frustrated me. Nothing was done to make me feel that a couple constables with rifles would be a threat but the story insisted upon it.

Personally Salem is by far my least favorite Epic of Remnant. I have a lot of respect for what it tried to do, and there are some things it did do very well. But as a whole it felt like bigger wasted potential than even Agartha. (Tho I will admit my expectations for Agartha were so low going in that I ended up surprised it was London bad). As you said this chapter has Samson and Mata Hari's best writing by far. Robin hood is good as well. The overall atmosphere is incredible and the chapter has great tension. Really unique stuff. Witchfinder General is a great villain. Some of the exicutions are truly gripping. The problem is everything else. As you said Abbey feels completely tacked on in her own story and is just cute. Her interlude is much more interesting. Nezha just exists which is a frequent problem of her writing. Medea/Circe feel like they exist only to loosely explore the ideas of witches, but don't really do much. She is fun at least. Sheba is a character with so much potential, Solomon aka Romani's former wife. Does nothing. As hard as they go with Mata Hari and Samson, everyone else is left behind. Then there's my biggest problem. The fucking play segments. They eat so much screen time. They are boring. Kinda silly and ruin the oppressive tension being built up. And exist just to tell us history we may already know. They just feel so out of place and really fuck up the pacing and tone of the early chapters. Then there's what you mention. The ending is rushed and anticlimactic, and every fight is a boring slog except Abbeys fight. That was cool. I admire Salem for what it tried to do and what it succeeded in. But it's dragged down too hard by a myriad of factors.

  • @NotSpecialDude

I'm in the same boat about them plays. I had no guilt skipping their cutscenes once I realized their irrelevance. The only one I liked was the Circe play done in the bar. The deal breaker for me was actually the ending. Yeah, Abbey being underdeveloped was disappointing and the add-on Servants felt underwhelming, but none of that bothered me since they still could be used in gameplay. That ending with Carter, now that was stupid. Lovecraft reference or not, that was not a satisfying way to end it. Especially since if you're not blessed by the gatcha gods (i.e me) you wouldn't get Abbey and thus her interlude. The worst part of Salem for me is that, it's the prelude to the lost belts. All the other chapters in EoR had some foreshadowing to the LBs in either tone, theme, plot, or a mix. Shinjuku set up the clocktower's discontent in the beginning. Argatha has you destroy three kingdoms with it's respective people disappearing upon the leader's defeat, culminating with a battle in the sky. Shimosa was DRIPPING with foreshadowing. And Salem... had only Meph foreshadowing Ritsuka's torment in Arc2. Personally, Shimosa should have been the final act.

Looking back on this, I feel like if Carter were to be a servant he'd make for the perfect "Voyager" class we never got. He, like Dantes and Musashi, could have multi-dimensional hopping powers (like Zelrich's Second Magic) and could be the perfect counter to the Shielder class should Lasengle try and add in more of them. What could've been better would be that his appearance at the end was him finally succeeding in breaking through the barrier through using magecraft and that he had been trying to do so since the beginning of the Remnant.

The concept of combining the Crucible/Salem witch trials with the Dunwich Horror/Lovecraft in this sigularity was a stroke of genius in my opinion. The execution of story itself was solid, but a little rough around the edges, especially the ending (as you mentioned). I loved the aspect of servant mortality combined with the lack of knowledge regarding who the real enemy in the singularity initially is. As a result, the characters are forced to spend the majority of this singularity holding back their growing anger and frustration with the innocent townspeople as they accuse one another (and of course your servants) of being their enemy. It's a refreshing change of pace from all the previous singularities, and even most of the lostbelts, where the citizens are just helplessly caught in the middle of the battle. Even with the finale feeling lackluster, the painful and emotional mystery leading up to that climax combined with having an innovative concept involving two completely different works of fiction that just mesh together so well, made Salem my favorite singularity in the entire game thus far. I only hope against hope that we get Lavinia as a servant someday... She deserves it.

Honestly, I would say the Ooky managed an even stronger sense of pressure than Salem, given how we wake up one day having lost everyone but 4 people in Chaldea, and know that every single one of our comrades have been turned into materials for building an enormous labyrinth. So every single one of their lives are in the hands of Kama, and boy is that scary. The Ooku is great, one of my favorite events ever

They did explain. Da Vinci was doing a summoning experiment before the Clock Tower sent their experts to close shop. In the middle of it Sheba, as in the system that monitors the data received from CHALDEAS detected Raum and his singularity. It took immediate action and it summoned the Queen of Sheba into the singularity (by using itself as the catalyst). The action itself also made Da Vinci’s experiment “fail”, unknowingly summoning Circe (likely because of the Witch Hunt association). It is a very short and brief explanation, but the game does provide it. Heck, the entire chapter begins with Da Vinci complaining of strange issues with the Sheba system, and that food resources were missing (stolen by Circe).

I think they should have went with at least 5% fighting while the rest being story for Salem. I like most of the Remnants chapters with my two favorite being Shinjuku and Shimosa. Those two remnants had balance in their stories and the battles were incorporated at the right scene making the play through more smooth compared to their predecessors. Argartha and Salem suffer from to much fighting and less storytelling. Lasagna should of had the fights cut back and focused more on the story telling for those two arcs because MAN those two were a PAIN to get past and the fights were HIGHLY unnecessary when it came to a lot of avoid fighting scenes! Specifically for Salem because we aren't supposed to stand out to much and the ones for Argartha could have been avoided. I don't know if anyone made it far, so please don't read any further if you have not played LB1 (Lostbelt 1) but. In LB 1 they gave us options to either fight a big boss, or take out a wave of monsters to get to a camp the players needed to get to so they can get some help. If they did it like that for both Argartha and Salem, but a choice between fighting or no fighting, players would then have a choice to either fight for not in situations we needed a choice for.

But Salem is the more unique one Edit: I have a grailed Sanson because of Salem. He was the one character that stuck with me in this story. I didn't know why i liked him in the story. I remember Salem terrifying me because of dramatic irony on my part. The fact that Abigail was on rate up made me know she had to be used for something in the story. So I looked up who she was in history to get a better picture of what maybe was going on. To my surprise shes barely even a footnote. But since I had already seen the signs of Eldrich horror on the horizon there being nothing on Abigail Williams made it more terrifying because it felt like I was reading a book with no words. There being next to no tangible information on Abigail Williams meant that anything that was happening with her came to a surprise to me. Overall still my favorite Epic of Remnant chapter.

Salem worked because right out of the fate they made very clear that the servants could die nornally. This is a a very different tone from the ususal they can die against a powerful enemy and in a heroic last stand. That makes reading the story immediately intriguing. At the same time its a trick they will never pull off again. Otherwise they risky into cheapness. Unfortunately the dome setting (a soviet film and novel) was done to death from marvel to fate and cheap warner series. And rendered that apesct of the story very very boring.

Salem for me is like a book that you cant put down, its so immersive that you think that you are there in Salem itself. The hangings was my favourite part of the story. It felt like a train wreck, its bad, its going to hurt, but there's nothing you can do about it. I havent felt this hopeless and miserable in an FGO story. Hopkins was so good, one of the intimidating and powerful villain in FGO despite being an ordinary human. The ending's kinda meh but i still like it. As of now, Salem is my favourite story in FGO.

Weird, story felt worse as I went further into reading it, ended up just skipping a lot of it near the end. Hopkins sucked as a villain for me, didn’t like his attitude at all and it didn’t make much sense how he could do much with the human body he had.

For me Shinjoku is the most well written storie from Epic of Reminant, slightly above Shimousa. Salem try too hard to have a dark tone, but at this point the Lamus from Babylonia prety much desensitized me for everything. Seriously, those are by for the most gruesome, cruel and terrifying things FGO ever had and only sexual assault is missing for those things to become Berserk monsters.

I personally despise Salem. It has a plot that only works by depowering every single character and then handing them the idiot ball. Everyone is wildly out of character. And the two themes of it heavily contradict each other. The point of Lovecraft is that there are very real and unstoppable outside influences on humanity. The tragedy of Salem is that there were no supernatural elements at work just human paranoia and hate. Inserting lovecratian elements just removes the freedom of choice that makes the Salem witch trials so disturbing.

I feel like the important context here is of an RPG not a story. For those who might not know, the Call of Cthulhu TTRPG is popular in Japan. Ridiculously popular, to the extent that CoC sells more copies in Japanese than it does in English. To me, Salem reads like a campaign the author ran for his CoC group, just rewritten with FGO characters awkwardly shoehorned in. That's why most of the good things in Salem are kind of unrelated to FGO, and most of the bad things are specific to the overlap (e.g., filler fights or servants being a bad fit for a story that wanted ordinary human investigators). You didn't mention to me what was the worst part of Salem--the bungling of the stakes at the end. To me, the end result was the worst of all worlds for the Sanson character arc: Sanson getting resummoned at the end meant that there was no negative from his getting killed in Salem; him being resummoned with only his pre-Salem memories meant there was no positive character growth from going through what he did in Salem. Since I agree that Sanson was basically the MC of Salem's story arc, erasing any impact of him having been in that story seemed like an odd choice to me.

  • @trdl23

    @trdl23

    Жыл бұрын

This was before they had the guts to DATA LOST someone. It worked for me because without those memories, that wasn’t “my” Sanson anymore. My Sanson died on those gallows. This one is replacing him, and he’s very similar, but he is not and will never be the man who found his convictions at the end.
