The plague and later Arab invasions 80 years later basically ended the Roman's time as a global superpower. After the early 600s, they would remain just a regional power and never anything more. And the real damaging part of the plague is that it would come in waves every so many years which would constantly beat down on the populations.

The civil war which happened after the Battle of Manizkert and overthrowing of Romanos IV Diogenes, which killed off many skilled warriors who could have helped defend Anatolia, and which put the Romans in a terrible state of military uncertainty, was probably more traumatic than the loss at Manizkert itself.

The continuing waves of plague that hit every few years might have been worse than the first bubonic plague of 542 itself. Archaeologists and historians still aren't in agreement as to how damaging the plague of 542 really was because the functioning of state kept moving along as normal and the historical events didn't deviate much from what they were going to end up doing anyway.

While there isn't universal agreement among historians on the single worst year of the Roman Empire, several pivotal years are often cited as particularly tumultuous or disastrous. One such year is AD 476, when the Western Roman Emperor Romulus Augustulus was deposed by the Germanic chieftain Odoacer. This event marked the traditional end of the Western Roman Empire and symbolized the culmination of centuries of decline and instability.

The Persians never had a chance of reaching Rome, and the Roman Empire was too focused on fighting other fronts to ever actually defeat Persia, getting the perisan capital wasn't enough to defeat them, even if the Romans got it 5 times the Persians took it back every time eventually. Bringing the entire Roman army to the Persian front was impossible, but after all the roman-persian wars the two countries decided to stop attacking eachother, almost no civilians were harmed in any of the wars either, so it wasn't that much of a bad time for the two. The Roman and Persian rivalry is one of the best in history for sure 🇮🇹🇮🇷

406-10 AD was possibly the worst few years for Rome. The execution of Stilicho, the massacre of the barbarian foederati and their wives and children that caused 30,000 troops to defect to Rome’s enemies, which directly lead to the sacking of Rome in 410. The crossing of the Rhine in 406 by millions and millions of barbarian tribal warriors and their families invading into Roman territory, Honorius just sat in his palace while everything was falling apart and letting all of his advisors make the decisions- the unexplainable increased aggression towards the barbarians after the betrayal of Stilicho when Rome was in no position to do so. Just an all around sad and disgraceful sequence of events for the greatest empire in history. Also not to mention that the crossing of the Rhine was caused by the looming threat of the Huns against Rome

I would say 542, as that period has been called the worst period to be alive in history, period. (I think 528 is considered the worst to be alive.) A morbid fact: I saw that the COVID-19 pandemic has killed more people than the Antonine plague. :( Considering how disruptive the COVID pandemic was in the 21st century, I wonder how disruptive the pandemics of antiquity were for Ancient Rome.

Definitely more so than Covid. Covid may have comparable numbers of deaths to some of the plagues in the age of antiquity but if u look at it as a proportion of the entire population then Covid is no where close. The devastation would have been insane. Imagine 1/3 ppl you know dying and the cities being so bare after all the deaths.

But in the past two years, doctors and more doctors came out saying that during 2020, they were forced to put "Covid" as cause of death to anyone who died, whether they fell off a bridge, car crash, or even took way too many pills. So now we don't know what the real number is, and it's the 21st Century. What was the real number back then?

My money is on the plagues of Antoine and Cyprean. These plagues were the direct cause of the Roman decline as they killed millions of people. Some estimates are as high as 40% of the entire population. Without these plagues, Rome would never have suffered the severe Manpower shortage it had in the third century. The Manpower shortage affected every industry within the empire, but more importantly it affected the military. The Army was no longer able to fill its ranks and Rome found that their army was only half as large as it once was. This is why Barbarian invasions became more frequent in the third century. It's directly what caused the crisis of the third century, and it's amazing that Rome even survived that century. But despite the Empire survival, the empire was in Decline after this crisis, from which it never recovered from. From this point on the Empire would continue to succumb to Manpower shortages which resulted in more frequent invasions, more frequent civil unrest, and far more rampant corruption that had ever experienced before the third century.

I mean the Ottoman Sultans were styled as Kaiser-I Rum, and recognised as Basileus by the Ecumenical Patriarch, and ruled from the imperial capital, and had already married into the Palaiologos imperial dynasty before the conquest and did a few times afterwards as well (the dynasty stuck around for awhile as vassals), and were known as Rumis or Romans. If there wasnt a Holy Roman Emperor claiming to be Western Emperor via the Roman Pope and Charlemagne and contesting rule as Emperor of the whole, it would have historically been pretty open and shut
