I know frittelle with apples, too. Galani (also called chiacchiere or cenci or frappe) are typical Carnival sweets too. - The problem with Venice is to find good restaurants, the ones at and around the typical tourist spots usually all serve junk, and they're also expensive. My husband and I found a few good ones through the years, but they're more hidden.

And they will chase you off if you only want a small lunch etc ... Got engaged in Venice several years ago which was magical on a sketching holiday. Then revisited and unfortunately ended up in the hospital for 3 weeks due to a serious infection in my toe that almost cost my foot! The Venetians/Italians I met there were incredible, as a foreigner who had only spoke a little of the Italian language, they were wonderful and so welcoming. Thank you Venice :-)

Since sin is part of the attraction, what is the crime situation? I'm all for dressing up, but not for sin. Do real Venetians get dressed and go out, or just tourists? Sometimes I wonder if Venice is a crowded European theme park that only tourists want to stay in.

I am Italian and I love dressing up for Carnival, particularly in Venice. The city is very authentic despite all the tourism, just beware of the restaurants around San Marco and Rialto, they don't offer good food. As for alcohol, of course there is a lot of vine etc. but no one forces anyone to drink it. I prefer a good Italian coffee myself.

@@Pomoscorzo Mille grazie for your response. I'm glad to hear that there is still some authentic atmosphere during Carnivale. I have been to Venice, but not during that time. Me piace molto il suo cafe!

I'm also Italian, I work in Venice as i live nearby and meet there with my friends from the city. While it is true that carnevale is extremely busy from a touristic standpoint (you get pretty much stuck in the narrow alleyways and bridges there's so many people... which is really inconvenient if you have a bus to catch! 🤣) I can confidently assume that most if not all the people dressed up in fancy historical garb are locals. Local children also go out in their adorable children costumes, and not Northern Italian will be seen NOT having frittelle, since they can be found only this time of the year. So yes, it is a tourist trap, but not by design: it's simply a very beloved Venetian holiday that got very famous outside of it as well. Also, to think of Venice as a theme park breaks my heart. It's a real city with very real people living in it, people that were born here and try to deal every single day with the overcrowding and pollution brought in by excessive tourism. The most crowded areas are around the station and piazza San marco, but move away from those and you'll see only locals living there and going about their lives... so, I know this must be a popular assumption in other countries, but I kindly invite everyone to respect Venice's status as a real city populated by real people, thank you

@@morgana6435 Unfortunately I often have the impression that tourists who come from the outside believe that Europe is some kind of Disneyland with its palaces and castles, built only for their entertainment. They are welcome guests of course, but someone ought to tell some of them that we actually live here and that our culture grew over centuries and was not made in a few years just so they can come here and enjoy themselves.
