A couple professional opera singers I follow were shocked by this. FYI - my *understanding* (could be wrong) is that Rob actually had opera training in college…but hadn’t done anything with it in years. Also my understanding is that Austin has contemporary musical theater training. He didn’t try to “fake” full opera, and instead delivered a really wonderful modern stage rendition. Like pretty much everyone, I was stunned at how well they did this together.

A commentator familiar with the course Austin followed explained that in that school the opera kids and the music theatre kids took many of the same classes, the music theatre kids were held to the same standard as the opera singers (both following classical training) and all of them had to prepare the same audition pieces for the college shows, both opera and musicals. Most of what was studied was not modern. His teachers wanted him to switch to opera but he decided against it. Those not familiar with modern opera think that there is such a thing as an "opera voice" - a showy dramatic tenor, overblown like the dreaded Pavarotti. But in contemporary music, and in European countries where there is a tradition of concert singing, a lyric tenor like Austin would make a fortune, as a reactor with a background in opera explained.

Rob had training in opera, but hadn't sung it in 15 years. When Austin asked him to record something he said he would if Austin would sing also.

Rob studied Opera in college and Austin has a musical theatre degree, and Austin had been pestering Rob to do and they finally....it's so dang pretty

Absolutely stunning!

In an interview with Patrol Gaming, Austin said he really wanted to show off "opera Rob"; however, Rob said he wouldn't unless Austin sang it with him. He went on to say that he thought he'd been okay but that Rob was fantastic. I love how they support each other. Rob had extensive opera training, Austin had some; however, his degree is Music Theater.

Music Theatre at the school where Austin studied meant classical training to the standard of the opera students, and preparation of many of the same pieces. Austin has a fine lyric tenor voice, which these days is more in demand than the traditional Italianate voice.

Great reaction! I have never been a big fan of opera except maybe some Andrea Bocelli & a few others. But I have always appreciated the talent it takes to sing opera. I was pretty impressed with Rob & Austin's version of Nessun Dorma. I have heard this famous song done by Pavarotti. I think I was more surprised by Rob's range & powerful delivery than even Austin's. Pretty good for a couple of country boys! Nice to see them dressed up in suits & looking classy. Rob had some opera training about 15 years ago & Austin has been trained in musical theatre.

My mum used to listen to Pavarotti. I'm not much of a fan of Opera...but as you said, I can recognize the immense amount of work and talent it takes to sing like that! And they looked quite spiffy in their suits!

I have watched this clip many times and get goose bumps and tears every time! Only thing that is annoying is that the title says TRY singing Opera, they are not trying but ARE singing Opera magnificently. 👋👋👋👋👋👋

Rob has had some classical training. In an interview Austin revealed that robs voice has the same wavelength as Pavarotti when singing opera! It’s so much fun to see a different side of these two great singers! Nice reaction

Country Boys can survive...and sing too! El Mirage, Arizona

Both of them trained. Robed is trained in Classical/Operatic vocals Austin is trained in theater vocals. There is also a former Pentatonix bass, Avi Kaplan who is trained in Operatic singing. You never know what might be the vocal background of a singer.

Great that you appreciated this so much. I don't know why, but the ending always makes me laugh. It's partly the way the music comes up, but also maybe in relief that they got through it on such a "high note".

Rob is classically trained in opera. If you want a different take on this aria, check out Dan Vasc's cover. This was written for a tenor and Dan Vasc is a baritone and it's really quite something to hear a baritone belt this out.

Both took voice lessons at the university level, so they are classically trained. Lundquist has much more classical training than Brown, and neither had performed classical music in years.

That was great. Made me think of Catholic Mass done in Latin which I think would be awesome.

For the record ..... ONLY AUSTIN (Tifton, Georgia) is a "COUNTRY BOY" .... Rob is a Minnesota fella from the City ! They are both phenomenal singers .... Rob has the formal training in College - neither have done any Operatic work .... until this project.

Rob has classical training and can roll his R’s, but Austin has not been trained that way and cannot roll his R’s. Rob actually sounds like one of the three tenors.

Sorry, but many Italian commenters praised the pronunciation of both men.. Austin did quite a lot of opera at college and in any case anyone with a trained voice can roll their Rs.
