What Toys & Exercise Does My Chin Need?! || The Official Chinchilla Care Series

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

Hi everyone!
Hope you enjoy our Exercise and Enrichment episode, I'm so excited to have finally finished it! We get a LOT of questions about safe toys and playing with chins, so I really hope this video helps answer those questions. Here are a few key points of the video:
1. Exercise is important for your chin's mental health and physical health; their gut needs motion to work properly!
2. Toys provide mental stimulation and dental care by wearing down their ever-growing teeth.
3. Make sure all toys are free of any chemicals or pesticides, and sticks must be on the approved woods list for your chins to have. (Backyard sticks are not safe; they must be processed correctly even from the safe trees!)
4. Hay is such a critical part of a chin's enrichment; foraging, dental care, and mental stimulation are all big components of hay for a chin!
5. Check our approved vendors list!
6. Wheels are a cage staple but must be at least 14" diameter, no mesh or plastic, and no center bar. We like Silver Surfers and Chin Spins.
7. Playtime is super important for physical exercise, bonding, and mental engagement. A wheel is not a complete substitute for out of cage time.
8. Creating a safe space for a chin to play can improve your bond and teach them that your presence means good things await!
Thanks for all the love guys, see you next time and don't forget to consider subscribing and joining out Patreon! ❤️

I’ve just recently received a chinchilla as a Christmas gift from my sister after two of my three rabbits passed away one passed away in my arms. An I’ve been using these videos and others like them to help learn the best to care for her. Right know my major goal is to win her trust and affection. Shes still young and small so but I hope someday she’ll allow me to hold and pet her someday.

My chin is super shy, she doesn’t like to be held, but she loves scratches. I have to ask her permission first, if I don’t she’ll be mad at me😅 she definitely responds to when I talk to her which is nice too. It’s been hard to bond since her sister passed.

Such a great video!! They really need huge cages and a whole room to run around in (just like you have) I have a double critter nation for my girl with a 16" wheel and let her out for playtime in a big chin safe room at night. Chews are definitely a running expense!! I love pandamonium pets 😊

Love your channel!! My family recently bought 2 chins for Xmas for me and I love them so much!! Your channel has helped alot.. also I was told by the person who sold them to us.. that if I'm ever unsure about toys.. that bird toys are actually good for them too because the majority of them would be just wood toys and chins are ok with these.. mine seem to love the wicker balls and boredom chews ATM but I want to buy them more of a variety so thank you :)

Great content! I feel guilty now for not letting them out to play as often as I'd like. 1/2 times a week for us, but usually for at least an hour while we clean the cage. We have 2. One *loves* what we call pillow treats - niblots flavoured treats that look a bit like shreddies. One refuses most treats but will try to steal human treats like crackers and fig roll. Love my boys ^^

All such important information!! Would have loved to know a few more of these tidbits back when I rescued my first chin. 🐭 My chin floofs all love the sticks from NOLA Chin Rescue, per your recommendation to us! 🙌🏻🙏🏻 Question for you, if I may ask? - Have you ever had a batch of sticks (from other sources than you listed) be less “dried out” than you’d expect? I’ve seen a stick or two in one of our batches look a little green on the inside, and that worries me. Especially since 3/4 chins have suddenly had unexpected gut issues after being completely fine? The only common denominator is the green-ish sticks? ☹️ Could be something else affecting them, but the environment, food supply, play area have all been status quo? Maybe a bad batch of hay that didn’t affect 1/4 somehow?

  • @chinpals

I haven’t had a bad batch before but that 100% sounds like the culprit!

great video!! if you happen to be answering questions, i was wondering if you could give any advice. we recently adopted some chins and while they've clearly been socialized well previously (walking up to us when we approach, even climbing on us from the second floor of the cage) we're not sure how to transfer the chins from cage to play area without grabbing them. they're obviously not big fans of that and while i plan on training them to see if ican get them to at least tolerate it id like to not resort to that until then. they're clearly getting a bit pent up and while im waiting for a chin spin, id like to release some of their energy. what would you advise?

I live on a farm so all that chinchilla material is very necessary. A wheel a handful of grass and above all safe wood. There are dogs and cats so chinchillas would have a life expectancy of thirty years or less.

I have never kept my chin in a cage, ever. I have never owned a cage. It is hard to do, it takes major preparation and work to keep it safe. After 2 years he has never had any health issues, plus no vet trips. You MUST chinproof everything you own in it's room though.

I know that this is a random question, but since you have male chinchillas, what do you do when they go through a hor*y stage. Especially when it seems uncontrolled and every day. I didn’t think that they could be like this when I got him from the pet store, and there was no warning.
