I wish I could take lessons with you. I’ve been following your instruction and very encouraging methods. Haven’t played in 15 years and just started back again. Just had a "gifted” lesson with a local University Professor who basically told me my Gemainhardt flute stinks. It’s all I have money for. 🤷‍♂️

Thank you, Tatiana. Your advice is so appreciated! I am gratified to find out that I'm already following a routine that you describe.

Other aspects I'd reccomend are ear work (take some piece and learn it my ear), as well as rhythms (listen and clap them by ear, worry about notation later).

great video. i've been playing for two months now and still can't hold long tones longer than 8 seconds, grrrr (tenor sax player too!), hoping it gets better soon

Don't worry, it WILL get better. I play Alto and Clarinet and find that the reed acts as a airflow control restrictor. There is no airflow control with flute other than your embouchure and abdominal muscles. It will take some practice to be able to balance the two.

I really love scales and arpeggios. I could spend all my practise time on that, T&G Reichert LOVE THEM I really don't like etudes. :( and then the dessert of my practise time TOMPLAY!!! Love playing duets, quintets, pieces etc :)

I wonder if we could grow your love for etudes just a little! Would be fun. The secret is finding etudes that are easy enough to do in 1-2 week!

30 min a day isn't enough time to learn both general skills and repetoir. If you are a student working with a ensemble or solo piece and you only have 30 min to practice each day, I would recommend scales, arpeggios and intervals in the key of the songs you wish to perform. Your teacher should be able to help you select these. If you do not have a teacher, just ask a musically trained friend to help you identify relevant scales and arpeggios that would be helpful warmups. Lastly, spend time away from your instrument to listen to performances of the piece on Spotify or KZread. This will help you to become more motivated to practice with the right emotion and ear for other musicians. 30 min eventually becomes what can you do to perform the selected repertoire musically and confidently in the shortest number of days.
