What to plant in your Garden in April [Zones 3 and 4]
Despite your cold temperatures, there are still a few things you can be planting in your vegetable garden in April if you live in Zones 3 and 4. As soon as the snow melts you can get out to your garden and get some cool-season crops planted!
I know you still have some pretty cold temperatures in your Zone 3 and 4 gardens. But there are some vegetables you can be planted both indoors and out.
Zone 4 only
Plant indoors in April
Peppers, Tomatoes, Onions, Peas, Spinach, Broccoli, Brussels sprouts, kale, lettuce, Asian greens, and chard.
Plant by seed outdoors
Lettuce, Beets, radishes, spinach, peas, swiss chard
Zone 3 only
Plant indoors
Onions, lettuce, spinach, swiss chard, Asian greens

Here in 4b winter is being stubborn this year as opposed to last year 2021. Am having to transplant brassica like Napa Korean radish broccoli and Rutabega onions are also waiting to be hardened off before I have room to begin warm weather seeds indoors

Good information. Our snow has just left. I am in 5 according to the zoning but just on the cusp of zone 4 so I air on the side of caution and go by zone 4. Can I put asparagus in raised beds?

I live in zone 5: but zone 4 is always a possibility. I have a greenhouse with raised beds and I have a 2 x 8 ft bed full of asparagus. It is doing well. .

give them pillows too so there heads can be comfy maybe a bed time story aswell makes them grow 2x faster
Zone 4 here. Is it too late to put garlic in??

Garlic is usually planted in the fall. Spring planted garlic will be small and disappointing.
How do I know what zone I’m in? I live in Apple valley Minnesota. I’m so sorry I’m new to this gardening and I’m originally from India and have no knowledge about this weather. I would appreciate your feedback.

I always order a seed catalogue online (I use Burgess, Jung, and a few others) and the catalogues have zone maps inside them. I’m pretty sure Apple Valley is zone 4, most of Minnesota is zone 3, and Bemidji is zone 2 because of an arctic wind that always reaches down from Canada.

Hello Vishali. Bachman's in Apple Valley has pamphlets with information on what to plant and when to plant them. I too live in AV. If you need seeds, let me know. I have extra. Happy gardening.

It can be done! Check the back of your seed packet.
Zone 3 last frost date was April 6th. We’re really not that cold here at all. I’m just confused how you would think this and it makes me not trust your recommendations. Am I missing something? I am new to this. Isn’t NE area zone 3?

That seems really early for zone 3. It varies alot based on region and frost date and zones aren't 100% tied together. But for example I live in a zone 6b and pur last frost date is May 15th. Did you go out to the USDA website and check your zone. Maybe you are warmer than you think.
