What To Look Out For When Buying a Ford Focus ST MK2/XR5 Turbo 😅

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Hey everyone, in today's video I discuss what you should be looking out for when purchasing a Ford Focus ST MK2 / XR5 Turbo. I chose what I believe are the most common and known issues on the cars themselves and talked about the symptoms and what to look for. If you enjoyed be sure to like and subscribe as it really does help and never goes unnoticed. Hope you are all doing well and I'll see you in the next one, Cheers TheGearChange ✌🏼.

Hello, One important thing that you missed was camshaft timing belt replacement. The Ford replacement interval is 150,000 Km or 10 years service, whichever comes first. All XR5's are now well over 10 years old and if there is no service history of the camshaft belt being replaced, then it needs to be replaced on priority. If the timing belt breaks a lot of engine damage will result. It's normally good practice that when replacing the cam belt the water pump is also replaced along with the cam belt tensioner and both alternator and AC pump belts. I would personally also replace camshaft and crankshat oil seals at the same time for added insurance against future oil leaks. For any people that are new to the platform and looking to purchase an XR5, I think it's worth noting that a lot of these cars have been tuned and modified and not all with proper supporting mods for the tunes applied. Sadly there have been a number of situations where a modified XR5 will have an engine failure (normally cracked cylinder liner) for the new owner from dubious modifications and abuse from previous owners. So buyer be ware on modified cars. The key to enjoyable XR5 ownership is to make sure it is serviced regularly and not to abuse it, treat it with mechanical sympathy and it will reward you with one of the best driver experiances, especially on a nice twisty road. Also all of the XR5/ST225/Mk2 RS Volvo engines are an open deck block. I'm not aware of any "fixes" for cracked liners between the pre and post facelift XR5's. However Ford did make a change with the Mk2 RS engine. To increase it's power output it fitted a bigger turbo but it also reduced the static compression ratio of the engine compared to the XR5. That may be the reason why an RS is less likely to suffer from cracked liners given it's increase in power from 166Kw (XR5) to 224Kw

Thank you Alan, do you mind if I pin your comment on this video so others can read through it 😄. I knew I had missed something when I finished recording but I've had some quite bad weather here in Queensland so I haven't had as much time to record videos as I've wanted and I did do this one in a little bit of a rush but tried my best to make it easy to follow and concise. I appreciate you mentioning the camshaft timing belt replacement as I didn't mention it in this video, and exactly right if you treat these cars with mechanical sympathy they will reward you with an amazing driving experience every time 🙌🏼

@@TheGearChange Hi, Yes no problem, happy for you to pin the comment. I've owned my XR5 for 7 years now, 2010 LV Series 2. Apologies, but I don't think I ever caught your name.

Cool vid ! Have a question about the fuel rail pressure please. Did you just have a P0087 code with no loss of power ? Cheers

Hey mate, the issue I had with mine was the car was using excessively high amounts of fuel and the readings were fluctuating between 15L Per 100Kms or 34L, and the car was also in limp mode as there was a distinct lack of power and yes I had the code P0087 which indicated that the fuel rail pressure needed replacing. Once I did that and reset the codes and turned the car back on it was back to how it was 😄

@@TheGearChange Thank you sir. The limp mode you suggested would be like a fuel starvation prob I thought was wrong in my car ? Also had codes of misfires in 3 cylinders. Cleared the codes and they come back on random stagers with the 0087 sometimes when I try to put foot down. The engine has a miss at idle now with no codes until a drive. I will change the plugs first and move on from there. Let you know how I go :D

What’s a preventative mod to avoid having cracked liners?

The best mod to do to prevent that would definitely be a block mod and regular and consistent maintenance on the car 😄

Oh no, what points did you have for the video, just some general feedback or some points about the issues that XR5's can have, with the bad weather up here I recorded this yesterday and was in a bit of a rush to beat the rain so I may have missed a few key things 😄
