WHAT TO LISTEN TO NEXT... after THE RITE OF SPRING (DG Original Source)

Музыка

"The Rite of Spring" is one of the great orchestral blockbusters, and the Original Source Series AAA vinyl reissue of Claudio Abbado's classic DG recording is stunning. But what if you want to explore some more records in a similar vein...?
I talk about Abbado's series of classic Stravinsky recordings for DG (and the best sounding versions available), other audiophile recordings of "The Rite of Spring", and then delve into some similar works in the same vein as Stravinsky's masterpiece. These suggestions will set your turntable on fire and rattle the windows of your listening-room!

Wow, such a wonderful in-depth video as always! I really love Carl Orff's 'Carmina Burana' and not solely 'O Fortuna', although that is such an iconic piece and as you mentioned, it was featured in 'Excalibur' (1981) to great effect. As luck would have it, several years ago, I bought the André Previn 'Carmina Burana' album you showed and also the album by Riccardo Muti; both of which I found at a local Salvation Army Thrift Store for only a dollar or two at most and in pristine scratch-free condition. I tend to keep my eyes open for various versions of 'Carmina Burana' as well as Stravinsky's 'The Rite of Spring', Prokofiev's 'Peter and the Wolf', Rimsky-Korsakov's 'Scheherazade', and Holst's 'The Planets'. :)

Terrific video! Your love and intimate knowledge of the music come through. I hope you do a lot more! I have the Bernstein Rite of Spring and it is very impressive. But at 75 years old with already a partial hearing loss, I’m not anxious to test my ears with other versions! One is plenty, no matter how good the sound is…

Wonderful video, with some of my favorite music! The Boulez "Rite" from 1969 ties with that of Markevitch from 1959 with the Philharmonia, for my in any case. Wonderful! The Boulez "Mandarin" with New York and Abbado tie for me; Abbado has a narrow soundstage but, oh boy does it have a terrifying dynamic range. Dorati's "Scythian Suite" is a marvel; don't play if your neighbors are home. I have Chailly's Varese box set and love it, but I have Boulez as well. The end of "Ameriques" is just apocalyptic.

For the Boulez Bartok there is the Dutton Vocation dual layer CD/SACDs which are fabulous. For the Varese you are kinda stuck, unless you have the Boulez Complete Sony edition which, alas, is out of print. But if you must have the Varese, I would consider picking up the vinyl for a few bucks.

I _love_ The Miraculous Mandarin! It's one of my favorite pieces of music by anyone ever made. If you have the chance, look out for Christoph von Dohnányi's recording with the Vienna Philharmonic on Decca. It's out-of-this-world stunning, and what's more, it contains an _organ_ in the background during the climax of the Mandarin's chase. You'll never hear that organ on any other recording. It also helps that the Vienna Philharmonic play like demons in repertoire entirely outside of their usual Fach (Beethoven, Brahms, Bruckner, Schumann, Wagner, etc.).

@@musiconrecord6724 I have no idea if it's available on vinyl, but it is on CD and streaming, courtesy of Eloquence Classics, which has done such wonderful work restoring to print, even if temporarily, long out-of-print recordings from (primarily) the Decca (but also Deutsche Grammophon and Philips) catalogue, for which I, as a younger classical music listener who isn't old enough to remember vinyl recordings, am incredibly grateful. I also appreciate your efforts in bringing to light these vinyls because you still managed to introduce me to new music that I wasn't aware of.

Wow what a treat getting new POP and MOR content so close together. Hoping that it will be possible for both of you to be able to provide occasional content with all of your other commitments without it becoming a chore as these channels are very special. I’m so pleased to hear that there is a chance the Abbado Scythian may be coming out on OS as although my copy has a great sounding Kije the other side pressing is pretty duff sounding to say the least. As far as CFP/MFP repressings of Cluytens I did try quite a lot of them after Michael had reported some success. I’ve got to admit I haven’t come across any copies yet that have impressed me sonically in contrast to the World record club Cluytens versions which are more scarce but do sound special.

I heard this work done live at Proms with Boulez conducting, followed by his own "Sur Incises" (similar orchestration - 3 pianos, harps and percussion). Now THAT was cool, and a fantastic pallet cleanser after Bruckner 7th with Haitink and Dresden Staatskapelle.!

New subscriber and thank you so much for this. I still have my original Abbado DG Rite of Spring pressing, and you're absolutely right whilst I admired the performance, sonically it was always a bit compromised. I always thought this was a combination of bad mastering and DG's predilection for excessive multi-miked productions of the time, so not sure how they have improved that particular aspect in the new pressings? Indeed, at the time, it put me off buying DG and I turned to others (I started exploring Decca and Philips catalogue - Haitink's wonderful Petrushka with the LPO, or his fabulous Debussy Nocturnes & Jeux with the Concertgebouw for instance - seemed much more naturally recorded). As for Mirraculous Mandarins, do you know Chailly's with the Concertgebouw? Whilst I got to know the work through Dorati's later, curiously underatted but super IMHO, Detriot digital version Chailly's is just stunning!). Thanks again.

The Boulez Rite and the Cluytens Daphnis were both released on Japanese SACDs. Surprised you did not mention the Munch/BSO Daphnis Living Presence, thought it was widely considered one of the reference recordings in terms of both performance and sonics.

The Boulez Columbia recordings are underrated so it is good you highlight them. I have the vinyl in box sets with German pressings - they sound fine. In the 1970s CBS UK issued 3 disc box sets of Stravinsky ballets ( 79318) and Bartok (mandarin/wooden/Bluebeard 79338). Labels are dark beige with some yellow lettering. They also issued 4 disc sets of Schoenberg and Ravel. The pressings are German and good. I have never seen any of these for sale on discogs so there may have only been a few issued at the time:.
