I am not a doula but have been contemplating this for about 4 years or more. I think I might be ready but there are a few things I need to take into consideration. I’m a homeschooling mother of 4 children and don’t have very many people I can drop the children with if I needed to go to a birth. That is a whole lot to consider.

After I had my daughter I knew I wanted to become a doula. I was a young single mom. My mother and sister wanted to be with me in labor and they weren’t the most supportive (extreme understatement) I had 24 hours of back labor, no one listened when I said something was wrong. I knew about the flipping babies technique. They didn’t acknowledge me. They knew we were back to back. No one cared. She was stuck on my spine.... they lost her heartbeat and it was rushed into an emergency c-section where they gave me too much epidural and it almost went to my brain. I almost died. My baby was born healthy and HUGE with a massive bruise on her head from my spine.... I want to be a doula to help other mothers be HEARD! No one deserves to be treated like that. Out medical system is so beyond broken. It’s shameful.

I’ve not been to anyone else’s births except my own births, but I grew up wanting to be an OBGYN. That became unrealistic for me, I had my twins at 19 and just had my son at 21. I LOVE anything L&D and birth related. Now that I’m considering going back to school, this is at the top of my list aside from ultrasound tech & cosmetology.

All the things you pointed to and all the things you didn’t point to let me know this is what we need. It’s true you don’t have to go to school to be a Doula. Information can become a powerful tool and create a great birthing experience. This is why I don’t appreciate when I search for doula training and instantly all it show is “business business business” I don’t want to commercialize my services and be all competitive/thinking about money when I become a doula.

Best video I've come across so far about what to consider when considering becoming a Doula. Merci beaucoup Adriana! I'm praying about becoming a doula after having a hb3c last year. I have so many Questions. Are you doing a Q&A anytime soon?

I’m an BSN RN 4 months shy of 15 years. Im three months shy of finishing my MSN/MBA. I’m looking into becoming a naturopathic Doula. What trainings or education would you recommend or is a training/certification even warranted for this career?
