What to Know About Parkinson's and Voice

People with Parkinson's Disease experience changes with their voice and swallowing. Their voice often starts to become hoarse, quiet, and they begin to mumble. Speech therapy is something that should be started right away.
This video reviews the voice and speech changes that are seen in Parkinson's Disease, and more importantly, what to do about it. (Yes, you can do something about it!) Please watch and share if you know someone with PD.

Great info. Just diagnosed and my neurologist didn’t mention any of this. I went to an ENT to try to identify what’s wrong with my voice. They didn’t know. Thx to you now I understand what’s going on and how to get help. Looking for a speech therapist now. Thank you so very much

Hi, thank you very much for the video. You mentioned the muscles are getting weak not because of the PD directly but because they are not used. Would you mind elaborate on this bit? Why are they not used?

I read somewhere Parkinson's involves reduced dopamine, while Huntington's involves increased dopamine. Since both diseases involve problems with swallowing, that sort of seems like a contradiction. Do you deal with patients that have Huntington's in your practice?

The problem is caused by two different problems, with different difficulties and symptoms, resulting in problem with swallowing and communication. With Parkinson’s disease, the motor movement are impaired because of a muscle weakness caused but the reduced dopamine. Whereas with Huntington’s disease, the increased dopamine causes the muscles to be too tight. I hope that helped :)

@@MelleClaireJ Yes. Thank you. Does that mean people with Huntington's have overactive immune systems?
