    This was a cool video! I love to watch and analyze rolls. I will definitely watch videos like that. - I record and post all of my rolls and it has helped me immensely. (People at the gym says it really helps them as well.) Things that take weeks or months to notice, I am able to recognize after one viewing.

    Dead on accurate, I don't think any of us who have done BJJ for a bit haven't experienced the things you noted, especially the mat burns, lol. I do 2 classes a week, unless that pesky "work" gets in the way. One thing I did to supplement my training was to buy the mats like you have, I started with 4 of them and now have 8 which all connect with velcro. I clear space in my basement and have invited other people who want to get extra training over to drill and roll. When I'm done, I clean the mats and make sure the furniture is back in place (wife's rules, lol). I now have 10 people who are on my group text list and I generally train both Saturday and Sunday most weeks, along with an additional day during the week. This has helped me a lot. All the people I invite have to understand we all have jobs and families, so it is a rule, "fast to the position, slow to the submission", anything to aggressive will not get you invited back. When you get more reps it definitely helps. Also, when you get to try stuff while rolling more often, you eventually start being able to execute with a resisting partner. A motto we have is "just try things" while rolling. Worst thing that can happen is you mess it up and end up in a bad position or being submitted, so you learn from it.

    Great comment! I’m hoping to move in a couple of years and would love to buy a house with a finished basement or separate space for some BJJ...not to start my own school but to just practice with some like minded friends (like you’ve done) ...my kids roll too so it would be nice to have some space to practice...appreciate the comment! Hope you consider subscribing. 🙏👊

You can also just go through the warm ups, technique - and not roll until you’re comfortable….its fine and may guys do this..:or you can just jump into the deep end of the pool…they’ll be gentle. Im also 44. I have visited a couple of BJJ schools in my city to take a free trial class however I kind of lost motivation due to the fact that it was very exhausting despite I realized I have natural grappling skills.The warm up just killed me, not to mentioned they mixed all belt level's in one class which put me in disadvantage. The teacher dedicated only 5 minutes for technical teaching and the rest of the time was dedicated to matches...I wish I could find a school where I can find more beginners like me and they go little by little 😥 .

    Many gyms have different approaches. I really recommend finding a gym that has a beginners or fundamentals class so you can gradually ease your way into it. If you find a Gracie University training center, they have a great beginners program where you learn fundamentals before you do real open sparring.

    Hey man great video. I have a question about getting started. Right now I'm currently finishing out my contract as a Marine but I plan on jumping into jiu jitsu as soon as I get out. I already know jiu jitsu is gonna have a lot of humbling and humiliating experiences but I have great interest in it but in all reality I probably know next to nothing about it. I really have little to no martial arts experience other than the Marine Corps martial arts program. I was only a grey belt (only the 2nd belt up) and it's really nothing compared to jiu jitsu other than a couple techniques that seem relatively related and yes we grappled and had to test and master the techniques in order to earn tan belt, grey etc. But it really isn't anything compared to jiu jitsu. I suppose my question is what's it like to first start out? How would you recommend practicing at home (especially if you have no one to practice with) etc. I know this sounds silly for me to say since I haven't even started yet but I really don't see myself quiting. I lack martial arts experience but I've played physical sports all my life and I have great interest in this. Why do most people fail? I heard it's hard being a white belt learning a lot of moves and was wondering what the first 6 months to a year generally looks like, thank you.

I’ve had a total of 5 knee Surgeries and 1 Foot / Ankle Surgery. I’m a Big Guy 6’3” 350lbs. I’m not a fat Slob, but definitely outta shape. I've never had a fight in my life, so i dont know how the body works when youre fighting, hence i cant work out how the techniques go, amd i'm dyslexic so i cant learn the techniques properly, so theres embarrassement about that too, it takes me 5 times as long as everyone else to learn. I hardly go because i feel so out of my depth.

    Thank you for being candid about your situation. We all have negative “self-talk” that hinders progression and, unfortunately, it’s not limited to just BJJ. You’ve made a tremendous accomplishment by putting on that white belt and stepping into a world you’re completely unfamiliar with. BJJ can be very confusing to understand without the complication of dyslexia. Here’s what I’ll say based on my experience with BJJ: typically when a woman or older person (I’m 48) steps on the mats, I’m impressed. I don’t want to speak for the others at my BJJ school but I think most of the rollers feel the same. If you feel embarrassed and it’s in your head, just get on the mats more…watch BJJ videos in your spare time and focus your video search on the moves/techniques taught at your BJJ school that you didn’t quite understand. Don’t be afraid to ask the instructor to “show the move one more time”…I still ask my instructor this question if I’m lost (which happens a lot). Lastly, make sure the folks at your school are sensitive to your situation. By your comment it seems as though most of the negativity is self induced which is totally common-so I’m sure the people are great! However, if that’s not the case don’t be afraid to try other BJJ schools. Thank you so much for the comment! Keep Rolling! 🙏

    do it! Way better than any of the fake self defense bs out there plus it'll make you tougher while giving you a good workout. It's tough but fun. Plus, if some dude in your highschool gets in your face you can choke him out haha

    Can you tape your feet?

  • @midlifebjj

    @midlifebjj

    4 жыл бұрын

    Yes...I’ve seen people do it but I’ve never had any luck with the tape staying on - or I hated the restricted feeling when stepping or using your foot to drive off the mat. Your foot expands and flattens when you step and releases or contracts when you’re not using it to drive and step...this constant expanding and contracting feels restrictive to me...but it may be just me. Thanks for hanging out, watching and commenting. Consider subbing if you haven’t already! Thanks, brother!

    I’m 33 years old and had a kind of bad first class 😢. The class does not start with warmup and goes straight to a sweep that is super complicated (at least for a loser like me 😅). Nobody was interested to train with me. It felt like to be the lone kid in the elementary school 😢. The instructor after some awkward minutes paired me with a blue belt that was not so friendly and for the most of time he was irritated that I could not perform the sweep. I did my absolutely best. And that what we did for the class. When we moved forward for the sparring I received a 5 min crash course from the instructor of how to sparring and the rules. Luckily i had a purple belt that showed me a lot of techniques and that was super helpful. So perhaps I will go on, but man that was not the first class I thought it would be.

    Maybe just a bad first class. Give them the benefit of the doubt and visit once more. If you get the same result, don’t even finish the class…just politely walk off the mats and google more places to roll…I promise - you’ll find a place that fits you. It may take some time However
