What To Do With PVC Sleeves! | Vinyl Community
Музыка
Melinda Murphy, fellow member of the VC, put up a video a couple of weeks ago asking
what to do with her PVC sleeves after opening a record containing one.
Here is what I do with my PVC sleeves and I hope is an answer to Melinda's query.

This video came to my algo at the perfect time. I ordered the new Dua Lipa picture disk and this is how I sent mine. Did not think about the cardboard! Thank you!

You're quite welcome.
The use of aftermarket inner and outer sleeves is for archival consideration. Regular cardboard is VERY acidic, is NOT archival in the least. I would throw all extra cardboard in the recycling where it belongs. Get archival mat board (4 ply) from your local art supply shop and cut them to size. "Archival" mat comes in two flavors: buffered with added calcium carbonate to neutralize the lignin acid until CaCO3 is exhausted (and that is the problem), and true acid free made from linen fibers (not wood pulp). There is not much that can be done about older record outer sleeves, but at least do not add problems to your collection. my 2c. P.S. Museums and art galleries may throw out some mat board from old exhibits, so you may get the supplied free.

Well, considering that the records are stored in their own plastic sleeves, they are protected from the cardboard. I have records stored this way for many, many years and have yet to see any problems and no plastic sleeves have disintigrated yet. Of course, we all need to do whatever we think best for or collections and thank you for your feedback. But, I see no problem using these pieces of cardboard for this purpose. Please remember, the records are not touching the cardboard in anyway. I put each record in a PPE or Poly inner sleeve, then put inside the outer sleeve with the cardboard between it and the PVC sleeve in the back.
That's an excellent idea. I'm going to do that as well. Thank you for such a great suggestion. Have a great weekend.

Good idea! I have the same album and I repackaged it in a dual-pocket 4 mil sleeve from Vinyl Storage Solutions! Looks amazing since they are crystal clear and now record and packaging are protected!😊

I've thought about that but that can get expensive. But, yeah, that would be a great solution as well. Thanx for the comment!
Good to know. I only have a couple of PVC sleeves. Thanks for the tip!

@@MonkeyspankO I actually covered this same topic in an older video I did about two years ago called "All About Picture Discs". I figured I would focus more on just the PVC on this video.
chuck the PVC sleeves in the recycle bin, and replace with polyethylene sleeves. i had a very bad experience with my Connie Francis 45's and some UK LP'S. Fortunately they were common releases. Greetings from Greece

Well, by keeping the PVC sleeves in the back behind the cardboard they cannot cause anymore problems with the vinyl. Keep the vinyl in a plastic sleeve (Polyurethane, PPE) to protect it from the cardboard.
Thank you, I didn't know those came in PVC plastic. I hope it's not too late.

The danger mostly is when the record is not stored in an environment that is too hot or has too high humidity. PVC is pretty stable under most environments but if it gets too hot or too humid, then it causes problems.
Which sleeves are you recommending? Which for what , including inner, outer, and seems there are 2 outer Sleeve formulations! If you have a video already explaining all this could you put a link in? Thank You, good Video

I do have an older video talking about similar issues. But, it's pretty much any plastic sleeve is good except PVC sleeves. In my other video, I mention PPE (Polyphenylene Ether) sleeves which work well.
Terrible idea... The PVC outer sleeves are still in close contact with your records and might outgass over time and ruin your LPs. The only thing anyone should ever do with PVC sleeves is throw them in the bin.

I get you. But, over 40 years of doing this and that has never been a problem for me with any of my discs I store this way. Any gas would escape from the top in my opinion. The top of these are open, not sealed.

@@ThatVinylChannel And I get you too. No idea how many times I've heard this "been doing this for X years with no issues therefore it must be fine" rhetoric. Flawed logic obviously, just because it hasn't happened yet doesn't mean it never will. Some people get lucky, others not so much... I never have and never will keep any PVC sleeves close to my records but I still keep getting the occasional misted LP when I'm buying second hand and it can be quite sad to see (especially for pricey valuable pressings) a truly ruined record that can't really be restored because someone decided to use PVC sleeves for their collection. Besides I don't even get it, even if there weren't so many better (and cheaper?!) alternatives out there, how does the chemical smell of these sleeeves not bother people? They really stink so bad 😂 IMO taking the risk with PVC is just not worth it. There's always better things to use nowadays that are completely archival safe and don't smell of nasty chemicals. kzread.info/dash/bejne/lG1ruaeOlsiqdrQ.htmlsi=Gp5-A9ofPRFHBiND

@@werk4408 Don't forget, they are not that close to the record. They are separated by a cardboard insert. People always have to do what they think is best for their records. Given I keep the discs in non-PVC plastic sleeves separated by the cardboard and the package is unsealed, I really can't see how any possible gas from the PVC sleeve could affect the disc at this point. IMO of course. Happy spinning!

For the record, even if the gas is escaping out the top and not ruining the records, that gas is still toxic. You dont want it building up in your house
@ThatVinylChannel
7 ай бұрын
@@Questionable_Content Mostly there is no gas at room temperature. The gas begins at higher temperatures. This is why some records stored in a cool environment for 40 years have no problems sitting in a PVC sleeve while other records in a place where the temperature is uncontrolled are more likely to have problems sitting in a PVC sleeve. Even so, we're talking like 50 sleeves or so that I have and it's an extremely small amount of gas per sleeve. Records themselves are PVC so if I was worried about the gas, I'd be more worried about the 3,000 albums I have than the 50 or so sleeves.
If theres nothing printed or worth keeping on the pvc THROW IT AWAY! That gas goes everywhere around your collection.
Never ever in 40 years had any problem with PVC sleeves. In normal circumstances, nothing will ever happen to your vinyl records, unless you put them out in the sun or in a hot car. At home, no, never. Since packaging is getting more and more asymmetrical, I put the records out of the jacket at the back of the cover. Gatefolds are the worst these days to get warped records. Scandinavian here, btw. Cold and nice weather. PS: It hurts inside watching you touching the vinyl with your fingers several times before putting it in the sleeve. Why the heck to you grab it like that?
@ThatVinylChannel
Жыл бұрын
Very true but if all of a sudden your records are stores in a hot and humid environment for whatever reason, that may cause issues with your records in PVC sleeves. I did not touch it with my fingers. I held it on to the edge of the lead in only with the sides of my fingers. Not ideal but usually doesn't cause any problems. The lead in has no music.
