    Cracking me up "Noone is interested in them and neither are you" LOL, but it is still hard to get rid of them, I am so sentimental, but I am working on doing that once I get to the pics., lol!. LeLe fr: Cali.

    REALLY useful info and some really good tips and practices. I'm about to go through a bunch of family photos with my mom. She isn't overly sentimental and concerned with archiving -- but I am. Your video will help us find a good middle-ground to come to. Finally it's a shame your videos don't have more views or subscribers -- this vid is really well made and edited. Even if the views are small though, know that your videos have helped people, and that's worth something. :)

    @Bandrik Your mom is lucky to have someone like you who's interested in archiving the family photos! I'm glad this video can help you and her reach a middle ground going forward. All the best!

    Hey Laurel, that's a sobering responsibility, but also a great opportunity. Not sure if anyone in the prior generation is left who knows anything about the photos, but you still know a LOT more than those coming after you. Dealing with the boxes of photos doesn't have to be as overwhelming as it first looks. Here's some info on how to make the process easier and avoid dead-ends: www.unlocktheboxes.com/b3s-news

    I prefer to save digital archival photos and videos on optical media, specifically Blu-ray M-Discs. These discs are rated to last 500+ years. They are "immune" from major geomagnetic events (ie: solar flares) and the discs can survive all kinds of torture. Copies of my M-Discs are provided to other archival-minded members of my family.

    What do you do about the writing on the back that identifies the photo and the people in it?

  • @FamilyHistoryHero

    @FamilyHistoryHero

    Жыл бұрын

    Great question, Gene Metz! The writing on the back is gold so I scan it as well as the photo and name the two scans the same except that I add -a to the end of the photo name and -b to the end of the photo back name. That way they stay together alphabetically in a list of photos and the photo is first with the photo back coming right after it. Tip: If I use that photo when creating a photo album for printing online, I will sometimes select the writing out of the photo using Photoshop and place it next to the photo on the digital page I create for the online photo book. That way the handwriting is there to see as well.

    I am going through a photo scanning project in an attempt to eliminate totes and totes of photos. My method for naming photos, which is time intensive, is to use a date stamp in the beginning of the file name and then a brief description in the rest of the file name. EX: 20180516-George-Smith-family-farm-during-harvest.jpg. Then, when all of my photos have been named in that manner and placed in the same folder, and the folder is sorted by file (photo) name, they will all be in chronological order. Next, for photos that do have info written on the back of them, I go into the properties of the photo, click on the 'Details' tab, and there are a bunch of fields that you can enter info about the photo. There is a comment field that you can enter whatever is written on the photo. As part of the file name of the photo, take the example above, if there were comments, I would name the photo like this: 20180516-George-Smith-family-farm-during-harvest-see-comments.jpg.

    Thanks for the great tips. However, most of this younger generation does not care one bit about photos of their old relatives. They only care about THEMSELVES!!!! Sad indeed!

    Actually, what we've found is that in the 20s through 40s people are focused on the "business and babies" season of life, and aren't interested in the family history... YET. But there will come a time when many of them will become interested. Sadly it is often too late to be able to ask the important questions of parents or grandparents at that point. But if we will be proactive and have our stories told and the best of the photos ready to pass on, there WILL be a day when they will be valued and appreciated.
