    I just ate at a restaurant that reeked of sewer gas. I figured out the smell was coming from the men's restroom. The toilet seemed to flush fine, the sink ran well, and there was no floor drain. Either the bathroom was remodeled and the old floor drain was sealed over by mistake, or there is a broken pipe near that area. Hope they fix it!

    We did remodel in 60 yr old home and had brand new tub/toilet and sink upstairs guest bath and shower put in basement half bath right below. We had back up in basement shower when upstairs toilet was flushed. Had that cleared but keep getting sewer smell in upstairs bathroom. Have run water, flushed toilets etc and still get smell. The basement shower/toilet and sink are used regularly. We are baffled!! Any ideas??

    HELP! (LOL) In my hall bathroom in a house where the pipes "lean" towards the toilet (Bad foundation that is down three inches on that side) and not towards outside the house, there is a vent behind the toilet that stinks. Until I "right" the fondation to level, is there a way to stop the odor? I am sure it is build up in the PVC pipes that causes the sewage to stink. Why is there a vent inside the house?

    Now say 12 years ago I was living with my mom and told her I was smelling sewer gas for at least a year. She was in the home all day and said she didn't smell it. We had a plumber/drain tech come out and check and he said the same thing about the p-traps but did not camera the line. Then one day I went to wash a load of laundry and went in the basement to find a huge puddle of black water. Apparently it came through the cleanout access in the drain pipe where the cover was completely corroded and blown off. Was sewage backing up in the line all that time? A similar problem happened a few years later when a weak flushing toilet backed up and flooded through the basement floor drain next to the water heater. Why did the flooding always occur after washing clothes? Was it the large amount of water dumped by the washing machine that unclogged the drain pipe.

    My washer is doing this. And my clothes smelt of sewage. Now I’m wondering why there’s water filling my basement if I haven’t used my washer in about five days. The puddle is just getting higher and higher. I rent but my landlord is so slow with repairs

    It happens a lot in Spain. I boiled one liter of water and dissolved one packet of yeast for every sink, shower, toilet and bidet. The smell stopped for three months then I trested agian and stopped for one year.

    @Yvell Can you explain how the process of using yeast helps? Does it activate and eat the sewage naturally? It sounds like a good idea I will try, it as soon as I get some yeast. Thank you in advance. MountainAngelFlores

    As mentioned in the video, pouring water into the p-traps is a way to reduce one possability, which is beneficial for additional troubleshooting. Following down that path, floor drains that are seldom used are a common source for sewer gas/odors to enter into the home. Many times these are located in Laundry rooms and Mechanical rooms and when these drains are not used regularly, the water in the p-trap, which is what prevents gasses from entering, evaporates and the p-trap no longer functions as it should. Pouring water into these on a regular basis prevents this. Pouring vegatable oil into these types of drains is something my old boss used to recommend, as it will not evaporate the same as water, but personnally, I would not suggest it because adding oil or grease into your system is just not a good idea if it can be avoided. I only mention it here now because someone will almost certainly bring it up if I don't. Very good video...

    RV antifreeze is slow to evaporate compared to water and doesn't gum up pipes like oil will.

  • @vanhattfield8292

    Does the restroom have a floor drain? If so, try pouring water into it. Floor drains have p-traps but if the drains are not used for a period of time the water can evaporate and allow gasses to escape into the room. Another possability, if you have a bath tub, is that hair and grease has formed around the stopper for the drain over time and is causing an odor to emit from the bath drain and overflow. Depending on the type of drain, it can be checked by removing the two screws adjacent the lever and carefully removing the assembly from the tube. Clean any "gunk" from the stopper and re-install. If the assembly does NOT come apart easily, DO NOT force it. Contact a plumbing professional to avoid causing damage that could prove to be costly. Good luck!

    Hi Tamia, sorry for the delay in getting to you on this. We can come out and perfomr what is called a smoke bomb test. If smoke comes out of your dresser or walls then we would go in and open up the walls and locate the crack or break in the vent and then seal/repair it. Kyle

  • @vanhattfield8292

    @vanhattfield8292

    If your pipes got backed up it could be that the waste had backed up high enough to block a vent. Using a snake or flushing out the main lines would not clear this obstruction which could possibly force gasses to enter through a drain instead of venting into the atmosphere. Troubleshooting further than this would require additional information, such as where is the odor being detected, what appliances are installed in that room or area and is there a floor drain. As he stated in the video, running water in all of the p-traps. which ncludes floor drains, is the first step to eliminate possabilities. You stated that you had the back up corrected. Another possability is that if they used a power snake it could have possible broken or cracked the pipe or separated a fitting which allows gas to escape and enter the home. If they used the snake in a roof top vent to clear the obstruction the chances that the vent system was damaged during the process is probable.
