What To Do If You Find A Baby Bird - The Difference Between Fledglings & Nestlings

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

With nesting season in full swing, this is when you are most likely to find a baby bird. Finding a baby bird always is stressful to figure out the right thing to do. Although, there are different stages of growth and they may not always need your help. Find out what to do if you find one, and how to determine whether or not it needs help in this video.
Fledglings are baby birds that have just left the nest. They are learning how to fly. If a bird is a fledgling, it is nearly fully feathered, and is able to stand, hop, flutter, and hold onto things. Most likely, if a fledgling has no visible signs of injury or illness, it is perfectly fine and its parents are somewhere nearby keeping an eye on it. One of the biggest mistakes made by people, with good intentions is "saving" perfectly healthy fledglings who are just learning how to fly.
Nestlings are baby bird that still rely on their parents. If you found one outside of a nest, most likely it has fallen. If a bird is a nestling, it is usually sparsely feathered, and is not able to stand, hop, flutter or hold onto things. Most of the time, if you find a nestling, it probably needs help.
If a bird is injured or ill, both parents are found dead, or in the case of a nestling you can't find the nest or it has been abandoned by the parents, contact a wildlife rehab. I would contact one before even interacting with a baby bird.
Contacting a wildlife rehab to get their expert advice is never a bad idea, even if it is just for something like a fledgling.

    Found a fledgling last night(I didn’t know it was one at the time)a cat had it and I shooed the cat away and other cats were praying on it, he didn’t want to fly and he was breathing heavily and would flutter away if i got close, I kept it in a box overnight and took it to a nature center in the morning, they told me it was a fledgling and to put it back where I found it, so I put it down where I first found it and after about a minute it flew to the hood at my car looked at me one last time and flew away.

    I found one he was about 3 days old I’ve been taking care of him keeping hot bottle of water with heating pads to keep him warm. I have to grind food to help him eat since mom can’t throw it up. Yes I could probably take it to a place but I don’t think they take starlings. Also the baby is doing very well. Once he’s prepared to learn to fly I’ll bring him near his nest for a hour or so a day so he can watch other birds.

    Just helped a ton. Had a bird nest in our gutter for Spring and decided to leave it alone until the birdies left the nest. Came out to the backyard this morning to see a fledgling around near the fence. Thought it was an injured bird until I put to and two together. Then I actually seen the 3rd fledging flap to the ground and the parents fluttering around them from time to time. Very beautiful to see.

    Hello! I live in a suburb of San Antonio. I've had both robins (as pictured in this video) and mostly barn swallows on my property. There are 2 other stages of baby birds: Hatchling and juveniles. Hatchlings are 0-3 days old. The are almost completely bald, and their eyes are closed. If you found a hatchling, I doubt very seriously that it is still alive, due to the shock from falling out of the nest, and most likely from coming in contact with extreme temperatures (out of the nest and no feathers = most likely too cold; or if it fell on a patio, porch, or sidewalk--too hot or too wet). Nestlings are 3-12 days old, their eyes are open, they can make sound, and have pin feathers. Fledglings are approx. 2 weeks old and have down feathers. Contrary to what you said in your video, all birds can move around PLENTY. Trust me--they can walk, or at least crawl, etc. just fine in search of warmth & seclusion. Juveniles are older than fledglings (e.g., 3 weeks or more). While juveniles have already fledged, they still return to the nest to roost until migration. Juveniles can feed themselves, but still sometimes accept food from their parents. Juveniles are full-size, but lack the colors and hues of the feathers that adult birds have.

  • @birdnerd5631

    @birdnerd5631

    2 жыл бұрын

    Yes, thank you! I agree with what you said here, I did not mention hatchlings since this was a what to do if you find a baby bird video, not a stages of young birds growth video, and as you mentioned you are not likely to find one alive. Same with juveniles, they are not normally mistaken for baby birds. I don't agree with what you said about them moving around though. If you were to find a nestling on the ground, it would pretty much just be flopping around or not moving at all. I never said they were incapable of moving around as they can make small movements, especially towards the end of the nestling period as they begin to become stronger. I specifically said in the video that fledglings are " able to hop or flutter around. They are also able to hold onto a branch by themselves." The being able to hold onto a branch and fluttering around, testing their wings is the main factor to help people not immersed in the bird world identify the stage. Also, the juveniles do not usually return to their nests to roost. A nest is more like a nursery for birds, used for incubating eggs and raising young, after the birds have fledged they do not return. Thank you for your comment! :)

    I found a fledgling, it can’t hop but it has a lot of feathers and also can semi fly (maybe half a foot off the ground until going back down). I can’t release it around my house because there are MANY wild dogs and cats around my neighborhood. I actually have a large tree area that’s secluded behind my house (sort of a trail but there’s large areas of space where there are trees and kind of like a woody area). Can I release it there? I hope you get back to me soon because it’s outside in a box with a nest (one made from actual birds that I found on the ground abandoned ).

So I put it in a nearby bush. It was a fledgling I think and it was moving with eyes open. So I was shocked to see it had passed while I was having breakfast nearby. And a white and black stripe pattern ..under coat .. i tried to give it water. But it was scared.. i have cats inside and stay cats that come around.. .its been a whole day since it flew out..but its been hanging around . Chirping for its family.. the initial day..i heard many birds seeming distressed. But i don't think they came back for the burd.. ive been concerned about the bird..because owls are always flying overhead and.. while bird was stuck in the vent. I was whistling and making sounds to get it to come out ..a flashlight worked to guide bird.. anyways its sad chirp . Makes me feel sorry for it.. I'm not sure if i shouldve kept bird longer .. Although i have cats.. So.. I've been praying for the little baby bird. These animals capture my heart.. the more scroungy or on distress the more heartache i feel for them.

    I just found a young baby bird unmobilized with his feathers developed. I put it in a box with a shirt to make it nest like. I couldn’t find its nest. It is refusing to move (unless I gently nudge it) or eat. Right now the nearest wild life rehabilitation center is 42 minutes away but closed. I’m worried the bird won’t make it through the night. It is warm and dark in my room. I’ve managed to get two very veryyy tiny pieces of very soft soaked dog food in its mouth. So far it is still very much alive but not moving still, or even opening it’s mouth. What do I do????

    A few years ago, I found a baby Robin had fallen out of the nest which was located on a downspout under the eve of my house. He had a few fuzzy feathers on him, and a bunch of quills. Mama Robin was a few feet away hopping around on the ground and screeching bloody murder. Anyways, I put the baby back in the nest with it's brother. Maybe 10 minutes later, it fell out again. This went on over and over for maybe an hour and I put the baby back in the nest several times. The next day I went over to check on the birds and sadly, I found the dead baby on the ground. :-{

    Probably contact a wildlife rehab, especially if it is injured because even a small wound can become infected. They may want you to bring it to them and they will handle the care, as baby birds have very specific diets and needs. It sounds like you have done everything right so far with having it in a dark box with air holes, on a towel. I would say not to feed it anything unless a wildlife rehabilitator tells you, as it can sometimes cause more harm than good. Best of luck!

    I brought a 3 baby Maya Bird at home. I found them at my school, my classmates found them inside our teacher's desk. They told our teacher (it's a nestling) But our teacher told them to throw it away and clean the desk. I didn't want them to throw those birds so I asked ma'am if I could bring them home instead so I did. I'm not a bird person, it's my first time- ;-; I'm searching tips etc to keep them alive. I have to keep my 2 cats and one French dog away from the birds so they won't hurt em

    The best course of action is to contact a wildlife rehab. See what they have to say. If it is uninjured and you can see the nest, put it back in. If it is injured put it in a secure, dark, and quiet place to stress it as little as possible and take it to a wildlife rehab. Do not try to feed it and remember to always wear gloves when handling wildlife.

I too was happy I went this route when I learned that baby birds can choke on water if you drop it in their mouth. I think I made the right choice but I got lucky to have thought to do that.. Is it common for fledglings to just kind of sit with eyes closed for periods of time?

  • @birdnerd5631

    @birdnerd5631

    2 жыл бұрын

    Not really, usually if it is sitting with eyes closed it is a sign of something wrong, since that would be putting it in danger. It could be if it is in a safe area or in high temperatures, but that is not as likely. Also, there is a illness circulating in parts of the U.S. that does cause some eye problems especially in fledglings, so if you are in that area that is something to consider. Does the fledgling exhibit any other problems?
