I grew out my mustache for 10 straight months a few years ago. The hairs in my main mustache were well over an inch long by then, but the hairs right there in the middle where Jack's gap is were maybe 1/2 inch long at best - luckily just long enough that they could be trained to either side. I think a lot of guys just have very slow growth in that spot. Patience, laddies!

It's at this point that I feel the need to thank you for this series. I've been reading up for a little while now on how to best grow a beard & this has by far been the most helpful. I have similar issues to you. The weak mustache, the gap in the middle & it growing much thicker around the chin & jawline than anywhere else. You have taught me why doing some of the things I have already been doing is a good thing & have shown me that I'm shaving the neck line way too high. Incidentally I like the dips at the side on your beard. It looks good in my opinion. Thanks again.

I'm 39 now and am finally getting a slightly reasonable mustache. I was one of the first guys to start shaving back in school and have always been a bit on the hairy side, but the mustache just wasn't ever part of that. No patches otherwise. My beard grows all the way up to my bottom lip, and the sides/everything else are a bit on the freakishly thick side. But mustache? Eh. All I can say is the gap used to be about as wide as my pointer finger. Now, as of the last couple of years, it appears to be just a part in the hair like you'd have on your head. Just an odd pairing to me. My best friend has a monster of a mustache but can't really connect anything else. He wants my beard, and honestly, I'd rather have what he's got. A big, broom-like, Sam Eliot stache. Grass is always greener I guess. We're all different. I suppose we all should enjoy that.

Well said, man! We all have completely different growth patterns that come in at totally different speeds and densities. I think one of the key things to growing a beard is to become comfortable with what you can grow. Of course, we can always model our hair after someone else, but at the end of the day, our faces, beards, and bodies are our own. - Jack

I have the same 'issue.' I've had a beard since I was 17 and while the rest of my facial hair has grown much fuller in the last 8 years since the first iteration of my mustache, that little gap under my nose has remained. It used to bother me but when it comes down to it nobody notices it more than I do, so I just decided not to worry about it. I think 3 times in 8 years someone has asked if I do it on purpose but otherwise I am my own biggest beard critic. And I think that is the takeaway to anyone growing a beard: you care more than anyone else. For instance my family and girlfriend think my beard looks "great" on days I feel like it looks terrible. Just wear your beard to the best of your genetic ability, groom to make use of the strong areas and wear whatever you have confidently, that is what people will notice.

  • @pran93

I just found that trimming my mustache often actually helps. Not shave but trim just for the other hairs to catch-up to the same length. If a particular area never has any hair, then grow the entire thing and sometimes that could cover the gap up.

You can also just get an eyebrow pencil and fill it in. Fill it in like you’re drawing hair strokes, then lightly brush your mustache to soften it up. It should look natural if your gap isn’t to wide.

It's so true. I don't have a gap in the center, yet I even trim it sometimes to create one in the center because I just like the way it looks. Meanwhile I didn't even realize other guys wish they didn't have a gap in the center. The grass is always greener. great video. really made me appreciate what I have. What's weird is I have a slight gap off center. Looks fine short, or long, but in between I get this weird tooth brush bristle look, with wings. Oh well, every mustache is different, which is part of what makes them great.

Keep on growing as it becomes thicker and it might cover that gap when you comb downwards. I may be wrong, however, embracing it is a good start. Everyone is different so it's better to be different than being beard or stache envy.

I grew a beard out for the first few years of my marriage. I figured, I am married why not. But I came across this gap. I was discouraged, but I kept it and let me tell you sometimes you have to let your beard grow wild (with maintaince on the neck and cheek line and beard brand products of course) and not shave it. I figured I would just trim it when I got a nice hair cut and level it out to a equal length. So far, hairs are growing where last year they were no where to be found. Patience is key my gents, patience is key...

Jack I just happen to be blessed with mustache genetics, that in fact is quite similar now to Eric's. I'm not here to flaunt or anything but you will embrace your unique mustache when you get a cold and start sneezing. It gets real bad when you have something drooping out of your face! On another note, I've always wondered how much hair is ok to loose per day. I'm talking about seeing hairs in the shower or when you're blow drying your beard etc. I feel like there's bad days that I see as much as 20 hairs stuck in comb, in my hands etc. Notice that I use all top notch stuff and I'm not rough with my beard at all.

I came to figure out if I should trim the middle of my mustache because I don’t have that gap & I previously saw a video where a guy recommended to trim in the middle... a little confused now but I guess I’ll just keep it how it is😅

I have quite a large mustache gap, about the width of my index finger with just little velus hairs there. I actually was born with a cleft lip so that's possibly why. Anyway I don't like it but I just deal with it. The rest of my beard is not really full, pretty patchy actually but hopefully with time it'll fill in more.

I have a pretty big gap in my mustache, and it wouldn't bother me if my stache grew in evenly, but it's way thinner on one side. Any ways I can fix this or make it not so obvious?

I literally wanna create the gap because I like how it looks. But idk what tf to do. Like I’ve tried to kinda manually do it? By turning the shaver sideways. But with my shakey hands I do it unevenly, and always one side gets shaved more than the other.

Does anyone knows if the gap can appear suddenly? Cause for me it looks like a natural gap but I shaved a couple of weeks ago and I remember that I used to had hair in that spot, however, no it’s not growing back..

Finally someone said it! There are no creams or ointments, or specific foods to eat. I have no clue where those kinds of people get their info from. It is all genetic. Anyone with a mustache gap should take a look at their dad or older brother. If they have a fully grown mustache, you likely will too. If they have a gap, then learn to embrace it!

I hate mine I can't grow a beard so I figured I'd settle on a stache wanted it to look like Ron Swanson big walrus style, but even a few months into it I can't seem to fill it in and it's super obvious. I don't think they look that bad with full beards but when the stache is all you got it really diminishes it.

Jack my man , it looks great , and if it fills in with time , you might miss the gap . Mine grows side to side down the middle , but the skinnier part at the top of the cleft makes whiskers grown down too . Like you said you can't do much about it so everybody needs to except what you have and work with it . If a guy has full coverage and a beer is in order , a bottle is pretty much a necessity . Cheers (Look on a Sunny Side)

Hey Jack, quick question. The patches you have on either side, were they always that high up or were they once a little lower towards your chin? This is my first beard grow longer than 3 months without shaving down with a razer. Could this effect sleeper hairs from coming out? Thanks in advance

  • @Beardbrand

    @Beardbrand

Good question, man. Those patches have always been pretty high but they've definitely gotten thicker since I first started growing facial hair. I wouldn't say shaving would hold back any sleeper hairs, personally. - Jack
