I’m struggling this right now with my 10 week old puppy who growls when he is picked up or held or handled. Especially growls most at my four-year-old who just adores him, but like all little kids loves him too much.

@@Ashley-hv1qu in my case we made the difficult decision to rehome him while he was still young, after speaking with breeders and behaviorists. We knew it would be a long struggle to make the puppy feel safe around kids and I didn’t want him growing a habit of fear. We found a loving home who had no children. Before he went to his new home I worked with him daily, training him and having my children give him his food and treats, and gave him his own child free space. He made big improvements even in just a few short weeks. Had we chosen to keep him I would have continued to work with him daily on desensitized and training, and would constantly talk to my children about how to read their body language. Now that it has been some time since then we have recently adopted a very anxious 1 year old dog (same breed) and have been working with him, just like I did with the puppy, and he has really turned around. No more food aggression (using wait and release commands), calmed around noisy children, and not fearful of other dogs. With the right training things can improve.

My 14 week old growls when meeting new people or animals. I have been trying to figure out how to address this

What if the growling is initiated when he pulls on my pant leg while chewing

I bump my puppy or put my hand with finger sticking out in front of him and say NO and he grows and lunges at my hand. Why is he doing that and how can I fix it?

The problem is also when people think there’s such a thing as a “happy growl” and don’t realize the dog is communicating discomfort and anxiety. If your dog is growling during bathtime, you need to turn baths a positive experience through incremental steps/rewards, just like human anxiety. Too many dog owners don’t have the patience for that kind of training, though.

I would not let my puppy growl at me without a clap and a sharp no...he is not allowed to tell me no.

So how do I get her inside without brawling and biting me when she needs to come inside? This wasn’t very helpful. Ik she is communicating with me already..

I have the same problem! I have a 3 month old lab mix and he growls and snaps if I try to bring him inside. I recommend giving him a special treat or toy if she comes in, maybe if she’s old enough for bully sticks or Greenies you can give her one if she comes in so she looks forward to the treat. How’s she doing, since it’s been a month?
