About Hunting Texas Hogs
Hunting Texas Hogs has been in operation for over 14 years, offering world-class hog hunting adventures in South and Central Texas. Also offered are whitetail hunting and all exotics. Our regular hunting season starts Mid September and goes through Mid June of each year. We use the summer months for hog control and offer unlimited hog hunting during these months.
First settled in 1830, The Main Lodge Ranch has been in continuous operation by the same family since 2002. It is our goal to provide all of our customers with an experience that will provide a life-long memory, while providing a comfortable and safe environment. For more information, please visit our Ranch page.
Our Ranch Animals
Our ranch is home to many different animals, including Hogs, Elk, Whitetail Deer, Ram, Axis Deer, Red Stag, Black Buck, Ibex, Sika Deer, Fallow Buck, and many more. Not all of the animals at the ranch are available for hunting, so please visit our Ranch Animals page for more information.
Preparing for the Hunt
Before coming down to the ranch, be sure you have packed the right gear and equipment by visiting our Preparing for a Successful Hunt blog post.
The Hunt
Our Texas hog hunts begin at different times, based on the seasons. Verify the exact starting time of your hunt. All hunts are subject to availability. Most hog hunts take place at the Main Lodge Ranch of 265 game fenced acres.
Our hog hunts are not fully guided, but rather semi-guided. This means your guides will drop you off and pick you up from the blinds, pick up your game, and advise you on the best hiding places to find hogs on your spot and stalk. Some hunters prefer to drive their own vehicle to the blind, and this is allowed. We do offer fully guided hunts for exotics, unless other arrangements are made.
The Game
HOGS: The hogs range in type from Wild Russian Boar mix (98% of what we shoot), feral, domestic or any combination of the three. The ferociousness of these animals varies throughout any given year or season. Sizes of hogs also vary, ranging from newborn to mature boar. The main lodge ranch record hog for this year was over 500 lbs! The hog densities are sufficient for the number of hunters present to take their bag limit, however not all hunters harvest hogs. There is no guarantee of harvest or the size of hogs you will shoot. In the course of the year, 95% of hunters see hogs, but there are days when no one sees hogs. This is a high % kill rate, but we do have hunters that go home without their kill of hogs.
VARMINTS: Hunting predators and varmints is an extra activity that is not priced into any package and is provided at no charge. Varmints include, but are not limited to Mountain Lion, Bobcat, Coyote, Fox, Possum, Armadillo, Racoon, Rabbit, Ringtail Cat. There are no guarantees of harvest success with any native predator or varmint. Success is based on conditions such as weather, time of year, breeding cycles, hunter skill (or lack thereof), and of course, luck
Weapons allowed on the ranch include minimum caliber of .270 rifles, black-powder, shotgun with slugs, or archery. Varmints and predators are best taken with small caliber rifles if you plan on mounting them.

Good attitude... right on. I was hunting with a friend of my uncle's last week. Had some heavy rain and we ended up hunting and walking through mud puddles mid calf deep. I just said, "hey, we've only got one night left to hunt. Just pretend you're a kid playing in the mud." It's all about keeping a positive outlook and remembering that it's an adventure.

when you are a good shot, yes a .223 will kill a hog, but for the most part, a lot hunters are not that good of a shot and wound a lot of hogs. This is something we are trying to minimize.

If people knew how to shoot accurately u could allow a 223 because a 223 is fully effective, if u know what your doing, and these people that have never shot game before usually wound them

  • @Valor_73737

I have to agree about the .223! My caliber of choice is the 30-30! Been shooting mine since 1961, and have complete confidence in it and my ability with it! But you won't approve of this! I am located in East TX and the past year or so have had hog problems! Haven't had much success when looking for them with the rifle, but occasionally stumble across one when horseback or on the tractor! Carrying a rifle isn't all that convenient for quick access, especial on the tractor. So I carry a .45 Colt SAA horseback and a .357 Blackhawk on the tractor. Back in Apr I got a big sow my dog flushed out. She turned to confront the dog about 15 yards away, got a good neck shot on her. She stayed down. A couple of weeks ago while pasture mowing encountered a sow with 5-6 piglets! Was able to get her and three piglets. Distance almost 30 yards and I hit her on the move, but too far back dang it, and she escaped into the brush! From the amount of blood at the spot she took the hit I knew it was a good one, but I didn't think it a good idea to follow on foot a wounded potentially dangerous animal with a hand gun! Not as quick on my feet as I once was! Piglets were closer and went down and stayed with one shot as I was able to get much closer to them. Two days later I found her remains in an area I mowed after shooting her. Apparently our resident coyotes dragged her out of the brush where she died. A handgun would not be my choice if I knew I had a good chance of encountering hogs, the 30-30 would be, but better than nothing when coming across one unexpectedly!

So you would let someone shoot a .243 with a 55 grain bullet with 1540 ft. lbs of energy but you wouldn't let someone shoot a 22-250 with a 80 grain bullet with 1653 ft. lbs. of energy? Really makes a lot of sense to me. NOT! In the final analysis it is bullet placement then bullet energy.

  • @ididthisforthecomments.5893

The point is people aren’t perfect snipers, we miss, and when we miss the displaced energy of a larger volume bullet creates more shock, increasing the chances of the wound still being fatal while not perfectly placed.

How I know is because me and my body just got 4 lastnight I grew up my whole life hunting and I have a lot of experience but a 22 rifle is just as good as any other rifle soooo sorry had to correct you on that unless you haven’t tried it and from your personal opinion which I respect but don’t say it “won’t get the job done” especially if you haven’t tried it before thanks
