The writers of the Monster Manual sure know how to make things sound epic. "When evil threatens to overwhelm the mortal world, the gods may see fit to intervene... a Paladin astride a unicorn is a sign of the gods’ direct intervention in the affairs of the mortal realm. It is a holy alliance made to cleave the heads from Demons and banish devils back to the Nine Hells." Like, I just wanted a pretty unicorn mount, but now I'm the embodiment of pure Divine Retribution.

I once forgot about the whole "Only women can ride unicorns" piece of lore during a one off and a male elf player was given a ride. A player in character said. "wait can't only women ride you?" there was a *running theory in the party that the male elf wizard was a princess in disguise* and thinking on my feet i had the unicorn say: "Some of us are gay Jaren." This caused a few minutes of laughter etc. After the session the Elven wizard player came up to me and revealed that he was indeed playing a woman disguised as a man so it all worked out by chance.

So, I've been thinking about this, and I've finally decided to just ask out right: Can unicorns willingly shed their horns? I feel like a unicorn doing so would be an event of great significance, like if it were to do so to reward a party of adventurers for saving it's life and/or domain from an evil force that was beyond what even the unicorn itself could defeat, like say, an invading force of demons, led by a Balor, for example. And if they CAN shed their horns, it only makes sense that they can also grow a new horn to replace the one they have shed, naturally. I also feel that the horn of a unicorn, shed of the unicorn's own free will, would either have an essentially inexhaustible, or ever replenishing reserve of healing magic within, still having a direct connection to the still living unicorn the horn originated from, similar to a wand of healing, but lacking the d20 roll check for whether or not it crumbles into dust, and is destroyed once it runs out of charges for it's magical healing properties. Whereas one taken by force, on the other hand, would only have a finite amount of magic within it before it runs out completely, and becomes nothing more than a fancy spiraling piece of ivory...

I have two ideas about unicorns. The first is a location I thought up years ago of a mountain valley that has quite a few very magical residents, including quite a bit of Fae, a silver dragon lair on one side of the valley and at a later date a Ki-Rin moves in down the other side and a Storm Giant Quiescent (basically an old Storm Giant that has turned into a sentient storm) surrounding the valley, protecting it. I think in my early concept it did have a resident unicorn as well. This is roughly located somewhere in the Galena Mountains between Vaasa and Damara, in Faerûn. I will note, the Silver Dragon whose lair is in this valley got a revival after I listened to your Steel Dragon video MrRhexx. The story I formed for her is she joins an adventuring group in her Elven form and ends up finding out the team leader, a paladin of Bahamut, is a young Steel Dragon. The other idea is in a homebrew world concept, the Nightlands, that varies a fair way from D&D. Unicorns are one of four truly immortal races. Unicorns are forest guardians and are shy and avoiding conflict. Ki-Rin are their battle-ready cousins.

I think it's because unicorns have origins more closley tied to christianity than to fairy tales, as they are known for having been mentioned in the bible. They also don't really fit in with the whole "trickster spirit" thing the fey have, so in terms of temperment, they make more sense as a celestial.

Stephen Blair I was mistaken in saying that they originated in christianity, however, unicorns did appear multiple in translations of the bible. Many medieval writers also wrote about the unicorn, comparing it to Christ. The idea was that a unicorn only being tamable by virgin maiden was an allegory for the relationship between Jesus and the Virgin Mary. Also dnd monsters are often taken out of real-world mythology and religion, ie angels and devils.

This is very interesting. I think I would like to try and use a unicorn in my campaign, and your explanation of unicorns ability to teleport and the difference in the way they experience time gave me an idea. What if a unicorn's ability to teleport was actually an inter-dimensional / time travel. To use this in a campaign, I would have the party encounter a unicorn around the time that something important happened that is adverse to the party. Perhaps the unicorn takes pitty on them or they have done something that the unicorn likes, and the unicorn offers to take them back in time to before that event happened. After doing this and the party sucessfully prevents the tragedy from taking place, the party continues on their business, only to realize that the unicorn didn't take them to their past, but an alternative dimension where some critical things are different. This would be such a great story driver!

The blood of several unicorns make enchantments permanent, like it said in the video. It might do more, but you can't study it. No, it said in the video that when a unicorn forms a bond only that girl can ride it. Probably Not, only if she says that she's the master of the unicorn. She just has to be a "maiden" when the bond is formed. Maybe, but it would have to be after the original rider died.

And generally speaking absorbing everything can seem "greedy" and therefore "bad" where "White" reflects all colours from the light-source back into your eye socket. Just like a colour is just a bit of light that the object couldn't absorb, if that makes sense? But then again, I believe the question was probably very sarcastic and you didn't necessarily look for an answer, if so nevermind :P

An Alchemist Wizard having all the answers in science but lacking the meaning in it while a Unicorn having all the wisdom but none of the tools/intelligence to use them effectively to apply their wisdom. Unicorn gets the tools needed to support it's domain and an appreciation for the world outside.
