I read an old dragon magazine article featuring a man who was enslaved by a minotaur chief. He avoided being eaten or sacrificed because he was very good at making puzzles, and the chief loved solving them so much he kept him alive and even protected him from other minotaurs. Could be a good reason to keep a party alive if they lose a fight to minotaurs, assuming there is a high intelligence character in the group that can make puzzles or riddles.

Reminds me of the old story of the person who avoided being eaten by telling a fascinating story. They'd never end the story so the fiend would begrudgingly let them live. Forgot how that story ended.

It's basically the framing story of Arabian Nights. Scheherazade tells stories to the sultan who beheads his wifes after one night because he never wanted to be betrayed by a wife again like his first with did him. But she never finished a story and always ends the night with a new half finished story. Basically it's a folk tail collection, some stories went very popular in the western world too, like Alladin and Alibaba

I will never forget that one time when my campain took us to Sigil and a group of around 13 minotaurs were harrasing us at one of the inns. I guess telling them that "I am not scared of the meat in my plate, why should I be scared of a herd of walking cows with an Axes?" was a quick way to learn that Sigil is a place where everything is crazy and strong. We barely escaped due to smart use of magic and the DM mercy that not one of those minotaurs was a caster. Whoops.

    3 жыл бұрын

@@ee4724 I mean, the Lady of Pain don´t care until you start messing with Sigil itself, or worshiping her, or talk about her too much. She doesn't care about the inhabitants. I already knew the setting (Planescape), but the GM gave the rest of the party a pretty straight forward example of the place by getting some planar travelers that wanted to worship her. So she just appeared and turned everyone into literal minced meat. I still remember the chain. "Without you being able to understand quite what happened, you see the cultist nearest to the Lady of Pain, turn into a meat paste with pieces of metal in it in the blink of the eye. You suddenly watch as the Lady of Pain floats over to the leader of the worshipers and one by one, they are minced into different textures of minced meat. One into almost a liquid, one left just a torso without any limbs, one appears as if their flesh was separated from their body, one left a slashed mess but with their organs orderly stacked in a pile. And the strangest thing? Even when attempting to *see* what the Lady of Pain is doing, all you can see is the before and after. You never saw any part of herself, except of her head move an inch. Until she reached the leader, to him she lifted her hand and the man just vanished." "Can I roll perception to see if I can see what she did?" "Sure" "Rolls dice. 27. Yessss" "You see nothing, the most you see is a glimpse of some bodyparts flying before reaching the ground in different states of being chopped". That showed us quite quickly what NOT to do in Sigil.

The fact that they're apt at traversing mazes is pretty ironic, considering that in the Greek mythology the labyrinth was created with the scope of imprisoning the minotaur. Edit: I got someone confused. The point of my comment is the fact that, according to the Greek mythology, a minotaur should be the exact opposite of “apt at traversing mazes”, since he was imprisoned in one. It’s kinda like putting vampires in your fantasy setting and state that they like garlic and sunbathing.

In 3.5 when I was playing a displaced prince of a long dead empire(during the collapse he jumped into a safegate realm, to which the party shattered the bindings 20,000 years later) who took leadership and was looking for a cohort. The DM decided it would be Blyakori, my character's former bodyguard and minotuar. TO be honest, I was surprised he remembered that one line of text within my character's backstory. Blyakori eventually died restraining the BBEG and we created a monument for him featuring his white chalice and massive greataxe. Later we found out he ascended into godhood. Blyakori, god of Honor, Law, and the Bonds(meaning closeness to friends and ones duty).

I really liked the minotaurs in Krynn with their own societal beliefs and structures. Centaurs always get set up to be their own group but minotaurs get the typical monster treatment. The way they were written in the offshoot Dragonlance series was well reasoned and developed. Also, having one being essential to the development and story of Huma made them so much more. Compared to what is described in 5th edition they could be very smart, charismatic, and wise. Almost any class was a possibility.

Intriguing. So I guess the playable Minotaurs are more intelligent than their demonic counterparts. Also, means that their culture could vary. So it's possible that one could make a Minotaur PC that eventually becomes a deity and form his or her own pantheon.

Minotaurs in the game »Might and Magic VIII: Day of the Destroyer« are depicted a bit different: Noble and civilized, you can in fact recruit them into your party or play one yourself. They also have a city in that game you can visit. The Minotaur acts like the Paladin class, that can use low level spirit magic but uses axes instead of mace and can't use shields like Paladin can.

I just made a Minotaur character so for me this was perfectly timed. The character I made is a Artificer Battle Smith Minotaur that was raised by gnomes. Does anyone have any ideas how gnome culture could have affected his personality? So far I basically made him a gentle giant type that is something of a scholar. (He’s a gentle giant because he is used to having to be literally gentle to everyone or else he would easily accidentally break his families bones and the gnomes were kind so he took after them)

@@renarddubois940 ok this character is actually no longer a thing but according to my book, Minotaurs age at the same rate as humans (yes it’s Theros Minotaurs, however it says that these stats are also to be used for Minotaurs in other worlds that escaped the influence of Baphomet). He is in his mid/late thirties and he was surrounded by very intelligent gnomes for his whole life. So, he is very scholarly when it comes to the amount of knowledge he has. Edit: He’s no longer a thing because I got into another game. The party was filled with new people so playing as an artificer didn’t seem like the best idea and I don’t know if that was allowed so I made a Cleric.

Late on the video, but greatly done! Really nice summory. I use a Black-furred, enormous Minotaur as a BBEG in my first campaign. He has a blood-red-glowing ruby as an eye, which lets a Human Warlock command him. Created by this Warlock, the bull allowed the man to rise in power. Together they enslaved a goblin horde, now raiding the lands of the Swordcost and the High Forest. The village of my playercharacters was one of the first, to fall to the horde. Right now i am planning the plot for my PCs to find out about the ruby, the curse, the warlock. If they are clever enough, they might break the command-curse and get the minotaur as an ally against the true evil warlock.

When I first played a minotaur in session zero, grija was during his first few years of life a sailers pet. He was treated well among his companions as he was tasked with both being the captains personal navigator and anchorman to aide his strength. The captain taught the young bull the old runes to also assist them should troubles from the mainlands come in ill tidings, though grija rarely spoke he knew enough to aide these men. Sadly for young Grija, his days with the crew came to end when a navy fleet confiscated recent plunders stolen by nobles were found in a nasty set up, and worse still they executed these pour men in front of grija that for the first time, he felt fear and panicked across, so much so that he in blind rage dashed for the anchor to slaughter, everyone.... including his beloved captain. By the time his fury subsided all were but mesh across the deck, and the captain lost his lower half. " my boy... fret not to death, it comes and goes. Its how you choose to spend said life is the coarse.. Take the wheel now grija... steer your way. " sailing alone for a month, he in his way in secret made landfall on the mainland shores and set ablaze the captains ship and crew back the sea, keeping the chain and anchor as both his personal weapon and his beloved keepsake. And all this happened before he founded himself enslaved to a powerful warlock as well his personal wagon puller. Had alot of fun with grija, though he has yet to fight a demon to obtain its blood, it was just really fun exploring his calm stoicism before his rage.

Minotaurs are my favorite monster in D&D. Theres just something utterly fear inducing about them if the dm plays them as cunningly as he should. There was one third party book that came out thx to the OGL that put a neat spin on them though, it was Maze of the Minotaur: Masters and Minions series. Made them more of a naturally occurring creature in the world like gnolls or goblins and less of an abomination brought by demonic rites. Gave them an ecology and a bit of a tribal culture. A good read. Pretty cheap to aquire too. Great video btw keep it up. I watch all that come out.
