The Thief reboot hurt me, I played the original games when I was a kid and I loved them. All my friends were excited about Thief when it was coming out in 2014 and I was showing them Deadly Shadows on my old Xbox. Then it came out and was just okay at best and now we’re probably never going to see another one in the same style as the original trilogy if we even see another one ever again.

Thief 2 is still one of my top 5 games ever.

The Thief from 2014 isn't even that bad, even though i gave up finishing it, when reaching the final mission. With a couple of improvements Thift 2 could be amazing

That's how I feel. I take it like their first time working on a thief like game and made a lot of mistakes that veteran players hated but if you take a step back and look at the overall game it was a good starting point. Kinda like a beta if you will. If they were to make a sequel and just make it more "open world" like, allowing multiple routes into places or around obstacles (kinda like the dishonored franchise, which coincidentally was made by people who made some of the original thief games) as well as polished it up more with an engaging story it could be great. I feel like something like a mix of the first few assassin creed games mixed with the dishonored games could end up being great. The most fun I had was breaking into a home and finding cool loot as well as secret safes or secret areas where you have to do some stuff in order to open up an area to then find more fun secrets. We don't really have much of that these days with games. :(

Just a few corrections: 1: The original trilogy does not have the Primal, Freaks, or basically anything from Thief 2014. The reboot is basically a separate continuity without Keepers, Pagans, Hammerites, or most of what was in the original trilogy, and for the sake of clarify, should probably be treated as mostly separate from the rest of the franchise. 2: I could be wrong on this, but i’m fairly certain the main reason why the supernatural elements of the first game were criticized was mostly because the levels focusing kn them tended to put the focus more on the awkward combat than the stealth. 3: It was implied that Deadly Shadows added in the feature where different flooring types made differing amounts of sound. This feature has been in the series since The Dark Project, and while I feel DS’s sound design and propagation system lives up to the originals, and I wouldn’t be surprised if it did add some features. IIRC, they were planning to have a sound-absorbing device in DA, which they never implemented. Might have been cool, though!

PS: Almost forgot: you implied that the reboot added branching paths to the franchise. Deadly Shadows added a hub world, which the reboot also had, but while the original two separated the world into missions, each mission was extremely wide, and quite frankly, impressively large for the time. Some people like to refer to the original Thief Trilogy as “sandbox sneaker” games, for how varied your approach could be, even being practically restricted just to stealth. The reboot, on the other hand had very linear level design for most of the levels, and most branching paths were just two separate paths to the same place, whereas counting even the number of different minimal-backtracking pathways through the vast majority of original Thief trilogy levels would be a mathematical nightmare. I don’t mean to sound mean, I just don’t want people getting the wrong idea and being horribly disappointed D:

It's not the atmosphere that was the problem, it's the pathing. The fun aspect of thief games is you had to figure out how to get to a place yourself, but in the 4th game there were literally set paths that you could go and nothing else. Which made it bad, it was no longer freeroam, it was all pick path A, B or C.

Nothing in this game was good! The gameplay was downright trash, in every sense of the word. And one of the most important aspects, the Sound Design was so abysmal. That even Gameboy games could compete. Both Charcaters, this version of Garret and his garbage girlfriend who got suck into a Gem. They were so insufferable badly writen and portrayed characters, its ridiculous. It played like a garbage version of DeusEx. Having "cinematic" knock out scenes and sequences for everything. And all the other crap no one needs. Everything you could do in this game broke immersion. And whats with the POS Quick Time Events? Especially those when you traverse to the next area, where you have to hammer retardedly a button every time you want to open the Window? The sheer amount of utterly dumb game design they put into this game, is ludacris. There is not enough Brimstone and Hellfire to bury this game under!

Pretty much the only thing it had going for it, but even that was only a watered down version of the old games and a copy of Dishonored. As a game, Thief 4 was a passable action-adventure-movie game, a mediocre stealth game and an awful Thief game. It threw out or botched the implementation of several genre/series defining elements (great shadow, audio and map design) in favour of contemporary streamlined action. It curbed the player's wings and butchered the freedom of exploration that fans loved about the old games, railroading you into following a somewhat clichéd story, forcing the player to constantly wrestle with the game for controls as it oh so desperately tries to jam cutscene after cutscene down their throat. I'll forever remember when like the very first real level, the Morgue, forced me onto an overhead conveyor so I could access the next chunk of the map. The game literally puts you on rails multiple times, forcing you through points of no-returns, zero backtracking. The max amount of freedom the game offers you is that you can choose how to get to the checkpoint: Path A, the heavily guarded front door; or Path B: a vent or window to the right of the front door. So no freedom, really. It also threw out the old lore. Well, not really, as it pays homage to and references it, but it's all just the distant past in Thief 4. Which would be an alright direction, if they bothered to create a world that's at least on par with the old setting, but they just opted for a very generic, bland 'shit-hole city' setting instead and didn't bother to come up with good, fantastical, alien dialects, so everyone sounds like a character from 21st century true crime drama.

I really enjoyed the last game and would certainly like a new one!

The mistake they made in the 4th thief installment was that it was entirely linear in gameplay. Which made it straight up horrible, plus it was pretty short and not much to explore. I'd love to see a proper thief game setup the way the original Assassins Creed franchise was, where you have a giant city, and you can stealth your way through it, instead of just like 3-4 sections which all the other thief games have.

I loved the Thief series. I’d love to see a new title.

I love the supernatural elements of this universe, the hag in deadly shadows, the statues the zombie infestation the pagan mages all that imagine having this in a new game with a bigger more open world as well, oh my gosh it would've been amazing...

I REALLY loved Thief (PS4). Sneaking around, the awesome gloomy atmosphere, the beautiful treasures, the lock-picking - just the experience of it all. Sure, the story was dry and didn't make much sense, and the enemies were kind of clueless and mindless, but still, the game had good stealth and offers potential for future games.

Now 2021, and i still wait for 5 part. It's just another Garreth and story.

I remember thinking there would never be another Thief game. And then Deadly Shadows happened. I had the same feeling again after Deadly Shadows, and then they gave us the reboot ten years later. If it takes another ten years, that’s fine. As long as we get another Thief game!

I just beat this game today and I must say as buggy as some of the parts and cutscenes were this game had me very intrigued, I hope they make a part 2 considering how we were left with a cliff hanger in the end of the most recent one.

Thief deadly shadows was the best.

To be completely honest. I grew up on the old games. Thief 1,2 & 3. Love them to death! The fourth game was a mixed bag. LOVE the gameplay. Seeing Garretts hands and the actions in first person was superb. The world was good but could have been much better. The game had potential. If a company that cared about the originals made a new game It could be absolute gold. No hand holding and no linear story and levels. I really would love for a new Thief game to come along. It has to happen

Money happened, and almost all known and loved IPs were remade and changed. It worked for some of them (Doom, Tomb raider), but for most it didnt. Old fans didnt like these new dumbed down iteration of their beloved series from past, and for new fans they were just another mediocre action games. Thats why many of these legendary series died.

it hurt me that they forget about things from deadly shadow, like keepers, hammerites, shamans etc. and while playing i felt like in the box

Story is not great but i really enjoyed the gameplay especially with headphones in a dark room

Just me personally, I know I haven't played the previous games, but Thief PS4 was one of my favorite game of 2014 and I loved playing it and being meticulous with everything. Thankfully I'm playing it again thanks to the sale that recently happened on PSN, and it's still lovable to me, despite it's flaws like lod streaming being slow and some frame rate slowdown. Basically, I really hope the franchise can return in glorious fashion at some point and be the stealth game people remember it to be

The problem with Thief (2014) is they tried to modernize it to appeal to the newer audience. It's a big flaw that a lot of reboots fall into, if the original game was really popular and has a large fan base then why changed up the formula to try to appeal to modern gamers?

When I was 12 yo, Deadly Shadows scared the shit out of me. In my opinion Thief 2014 did a poor job. Hope there will be a good new title im the future

@@THEYCANTSTOPME While I do agree that Dishonored pretty much walked all over Thief 2014 but both games are good in their own way. Dishonored is more of an assassin stealth based game whereas Thief is more based on stealing rather than harming. However you can still play Dishonored in the style of Thief where you can steal all loot and remain undetected/no killing but Dishonored isn't exactly built around that playstyle, its more built on carnage. Overall in my opinion, I think both games are great and they are both unique in their own way.

My perspective on life actually changed when I played this in 1998. Loved every installment after. The art direction and vibe of the first ones will never be matched

I love for this franchise to be revived, I loved the steampunk fantasy style.

The last Thief was good gameplay wise, but they really needed a compelling story, good voice actors, more dialogue, and NPCs to make the city feel alive and suck in your attention. The city felt dead and the story was just fumbled along most of the way, especially the end. I did absolutely love the asylum/mansion mission though.

Guys if you’ve only played 2014 thief you’re missing out. The original 2 and even 3 are amazing and 100x better than the newest. If you had fun with 2014 thief you’ll be amazed by the first 2. An even better atmosphere, better levels, map design, etc

The original Thief game was absolutely seminal in getting me into stealth gaming and stealth combat options in games, both video and tabletop when I was a teenager. After Thief, I discovered a love of stealth combat and techniques in gaming and in my own life, and I will almost ALWAYS choose to play as a stealth character in a game given a choice, because after Thief, that was just what I gravitated towards.

Thanks but it’s clear this video wasn’t written by a Thief player/fan. Garrets voice and the dilution of the thief mechanics (into a clearly fps feel- even if u choose not to engage) as well as the huge world and screen overlays are what brought the fans to turn off the reboot. But mostly it was loosing the original voice talent and feel of that culminated in Thief 2

I still have my copy of 2014 Thief, the only thing I didn't like about it was the map design and the story. I love stealth games, the Tenchu series is my first love and Splinter Cell is my second, Thief filled that little part of my stealth experience nicely; Sneaking around and taking valuable shit! 😆

The Dark Mod is the Thief game that has filled the void for Thief (2014) to carry on the franchise. With more new fan missions being added on a regular basis, it's no surprise that the Thief series as a whole is continuing the legacy with this great mod that originally started with Doom 3, now it's a standalone game in it's own universe separate from the Thief universe, but the setting is still in medieval/steampunk times.

We need a final Thief game and , yes, it would be good if memebers of the original team would work making it. In my imagination I would call it "The final job" and I have an initial plot for it. Garret is getting old and he is receiving one final job before retiring, but he refuses the offer taking into account the risk. Later his daughter disappears without a trace and the only lead he has takes straight to the last job offer before retiring he just refused. He goes back and takes the job. From this point on he is sucked into the whirpool of the Thief world. The Mechanists make a come back, Karas who actually faked his death, want to take the scene and teach a lesson to those who conspired against him in the past. The Hammerites feel the danger that a Mechanists come back will pose , so they pepare to fight for their supremacy. The keepers , who have a new leader and new daring goals want to take advantage of the situation and get a piece of the action. Also the Pagans are not yet totally extinc, they ally with Garret this time in his quest. The sheriff who always had a grudge against Garret wants this time, seizing the opportunity, to put him down for good. Anyone is after Garret and anyone wants a piece of the action. (it would spice the action if a new party will raise among wing the old ones)

I loved the concept of the original thief. Before 3 million stealth games followed it...

Thief 3 was great game....

I was a fan of Thief, Thief 2. Played every mod, like Thief X, Also played the Unreal engine Thief multiplayer mod, and Thief 3, The Doom 3 thief mod, and the last Thief reboot. I enjoyed all of these with their own strength and weakness. I'd still pay for a new Thief game.

I downloaded Thief 3 last week to relive my teens and after 4 hours, promptly turned it off. For the time, it was great, but it has not aged well as I hoped and despite knowing I liked it at the time, its best to stay a memory. Thief 2014 on the other hand I recall playing, hating the city transitions, loading screens, but a few standout moments. I also recalled loving how physical the game was. 2014 Thief was not bad, just not a Thief Thief game cult fans wanted and thats it. It was a saddly rushed game, caught in the trend cycle set by Assassins Creed, shadowed by Dishonored and limited by the consoles. On PC, it still looks good, what was good before is still good now and I would like to play another game like this

The "reboot" ruined everything that the only true Thief games had created.

Ah yes...Thief. Spent many nights (and days) sneaking through poorly lit corridors, houses, mansions, prisons, submarines (yep), tree houses, graveyards, docks, and pretty much everywhere else, lol. I got hooked on T2: The Metal Age and went back and played Gold. Then...I discovered...mods. So then I spent many days and nights in Dromed making my own maps and playing other people's maps. I played Shadows and T4 but never finished them. Those are on my To Do list though. We can thank Thief for Dishonored and we can also thank Thief for The Dark Mod (which I'm surprised didn't make an appearance in this video). Anyway...for those that like mods and Thief...I suggest you check out The Dark Mod@ www.thedarkmod.com/main/ There are many, many missions to play ranging from entire story arc multilevel missions to short but tough missions. The folks there are constantly updating TDM and new missions are still being released. The community is still there...just not as big as it once was.

You all are missing the point of the Thief 1, Gold and Thief 2 - the ROPE ARROWS.... we didn`t have open world but the transversal was one of a kind!

They should remake The Dark Project. It was my first Thief and to this day the only game that'll ever steal my heart.

They need to reboot it like they did God of War. First three were amazing. The last was just ok. The concept of these games are unique and like no other game, even dishonored is quite a bit different. If the game was good, it would have a huge following.

Played all of Thief's franchise release from 1998 to 2014. After Playing Metro Exodus and CONTROL, ..I find my self playing Thief 4 again on my MSI GS75 ultra thin laptop. Graphics is awesome for a 2014 Thief game. Though I do prefer the 3rd person just like Thief Deadly Shadows.

If there’s ever a Thief 5, I want 3 things from it: 1. Going to locations OUTSIDE the City, like Blackbrook. 2. More connections between the old games and the new ones.

Still have it and still haven’t beat it since I got it when It came out I have a bad habit for not finishing games like Witcher 3 amongst others

Thief 4 reboot was very lackluster. The City architecture was fine, but the loading zones sucked. Also, the map was extremely confusing to follow. I want Witcher 3 Novigrad-sized cities to loot and plunder, without loading zones.

We need thief 5

Thief The Dark Project and Thief II The Metal Age were hugely immersive stealth games that awarded patience and exploration. Unfortunately, most game companies now assume players do not have the same patience that PC gamers were willing to give. Also, many game developers today simply do not have the same vision and passion that Looking Glass Studios had. LGS was a small studio whose vision did not get lost in the big corporate grind which is typical today.

What I find fascinating is that I find the Thief games to be particularly fast stealth games, or at least feel like it. While I ghost most of the time, and that’s a tad slow, if you’re ok with first alerts, and especially with blackjacking, you can speedily sneak through the thief games faster than I feel you can in most stealth games, and I kinda love that. Even when i’m waiting, i’m actively waiting by listening and actively charting enemy positions with my ears, so it doesn’t feel like i’m waiting for anything, which is amazing ❤️

I guess a better way to state my opinion is that the game truly lets you experience it at your own pace, which means that depending on the speed at which your mind is processing everything, you will always be able to fully experience the game without feeling like the game is rushing you along or stopping you to make you look at something you yourself don't choose to :3 Also that sound propagation tho Like, if they remaster the original trilogy, trying to recapture the way sound propagates through levels would probably be the hardest part by far.

2024 next thief!!

The Thief trilogy is my all time favorite, and will remain so. One of the best thing about them was the voice actor of Garrett (Stephen Russell, amazing artist). Even though I couldn’t accept the Thief: Reboot, it still is part of the series. I wish someone would pick it up and make a novel out of it (as it was done for Dishonored; a good game too). I particularly don’t care for live actions, they are particularly destructive to my imagination. So I’m not looking forward to any thief movie.

I kind of liked Thief on the PS3. My only problem was the game felt short. The ending was the worst. I thought there would be an escape sequence at least, but instead it cut straight to the ending and that's it. Honestly it felt like half a game. The gameplay was great, but cut short of a full game experience.

For all those interested in the franchise, please try out the originals. They might not have modern graphics like the reboot, but their atmosphere, story, open (yet surprisingly not that hard to navigate) level design, and solidly deep, yet easy to grasp stealth make them completely worth their currently cheap price. My opinion is subjective, as is everyone's, but please don’t assume that older means worse. After all, I don’t think most people would say that Ride to Hell:Retribution is better than Super Mario Bros, right? Yeah? D: Newer tech creates potential for better games, but the content of the game is what matters, and thus it’s entirely possible for some older games to be superior to newer games. If you liked the reboot, you can check out the old games for a fraction of the price! You might really enjoy it :D

"The fourth game was set centuries before the original ones" *Looks at the secrets referencing the Sneak Thief in Moira Asylum* Unless some time travel happened, the reboot is set after the end of the original trilogy.

I liked The Dark Project back in the day. I played a good deal of the reboot, dropped it for something else, then never got back around to finishing it. I should probably do that.

Play the second and third game instead. I suppose that if you still have the reboot, you should finish it, but I recommend playing the others first =3

I keep going back to the ps4 theif game. THERES 4!?! WHAT THE SHIT

Dear Developers!! Thief is a Great, unique and awesome game and We Want Another!!! Remake all the old ones or make new ones but this great game needs to be revived! If the pc players don't want it then definitely make it for Xbox Series X and other consoles if ya want but we need another Thief game. I loved that remake gameplay and was left wanting more! We've been waiting for over 8 years now. 💯🙏🤞 and keep the supernatural and mysterious feel.

I loved the Thief reboot but I underatand why it was criticized. The rework of game mechanics made it very different from the original and it felt more fps than adventure, whether your preferred combat or not. With a few more tweaks to the system, they could really bring a beloved series back from the brink and introduce plenty of new gamers to the franchise. More stealth games please!

If you enjoyed old thief games i would suggest downloading the dark mod, its standalone game with different missions and such.

I loved the Thief games, but for realism the miss the mark. You would never carry around a bow or a sword. Perhaps the blackjack and dagger but that would be the only weapons you would have space for. Perhaps having a conveniently knocked out guard you could borrow a sword from. The bow would also be too clunky, but a small sling and some glass balls would be a better fit. I don't know if they could ever capture the magic of the first thief game. It would take a long time to bring a top notch Thief game to market with the standards of games today.

i hope they make a new thief games.

Why? They just released a game last year

I cut my gaming teeth on this series and Hitman. I really hope we get more Thief down the road.

Imagine deadly shadows remake made by People Who worked on dishonored. IT would be epic.

I hope another company buys the thief series and continues with a sequel with as much of the original development team like Warner Brothers bought the hitman series and hitman 2 was made along with the publish of the hitman collection remaster
