What The Hell Happened To Mirror's Edge Series?

Mirror's Edge, which, funnily enough, came from DICE and EA, who've very much become emblematic of the risk-averse approach to game development that defines the AAA space in this day and age.
Very much a prime example of a cult classic, the original Mirror's Edge has a dedicated fan following that swears by the game to this day, and even though its sequel fell short of expectations in more ways than one, there's no shortage of people out there who'd love nothing more than to see the series make a comeback.
Sadly, that looks quite unlikely, because Mirror's Edge isn't in a very good place. What was once one of EA's most promising and interesting franchises has quietly receded into the background and all but died off- but how exactly did we get to this point? What the hell happened to Mirror's Edge?

I never understood the criticism of the open world. The story missions take place outside the main map and are linear, so you have linear gameplay. But you also have a massive playground to run around in when you want to do something other than re-play the same linear levels over and over. It's the best of both worlds.

Because if you are going to have an large open world to explore, you need to make sure the game has enough to warrant it. I don't mean having skyrim levels of stuff to do but enough to make it worth exploring every little nook and cranny of the world. If you don't add enough it can feel empty and dull. I honestly found myself liking how Dying Light combined the parkour movement with zombie killing and the like. Story wasn't the best but the world can be fun to explore, especially once you end up upgrading yourself and I am sure people get a kick out of using all your parkour skills to avoid and run from zombies and hunters at night.

The problem with an open world game you have to fill it with interesting stuff for people to do and explore the world. GTA is one of the games that is able to do that. Mirror Edge Catalyst fails because its world is so empty. It was very pretty to look at but there was nothing interesting to do.

@@ApplePotato I'll agree that it doesn't compare to the "things" in GTA V but you can't use GTA V to compare against any game. Nothing compares to GTA V. Not RDR2. Not Cyberpunk 2077. Nothing. I'm also sick and tired of how games have been throwing junk into 1,000 different corners to draw out the game. "I gotta check over here, there might be something I don't need." I'm seriously sick of it. Far Cry with all the gas/metal scraps/etc. lying around everywhere. Assassin's Creed with all the barrels with maybe silver/maybe not/other junk. It's all pure filler to make up for the short games they actually are. It turns a 4 hour game into a 40 hour game. I can't emphasize enough how sick I am of devs pulling this stunt. Let me add that Mirror's Edge Catalyst does have stuff to collect.. but it's 100% irrelevant to completing the story or upgrading anything. It's something you can go back to that will help you explore the map and find new places or are in places that maybe you couldn't get to at first.. but after putting some time in the game, you can now figure out how to do it. The point is, you don't need any of the extra stuff in this game to "upgrade" or "build" or "supply" anything or anyone. It's not there to drag the game out and make you go through it at a snail's pace. It's there to make you feel rewarded for learning skills and becoming more accustomed to the game and to give you a reason to play it after the story. That and the leaderboards.. and the ability to make custom runs and share them with the world/try out other people's custom runs. But, hey, the majority of games were like that back then, anyways. It's just become a seriously terrible trend lately with these zoomer devs that only have this one answer to the question of "how can we lengthen our game?" More missions? More parts to the story? Nah... just throw junk that you have to have everywhere except where you are supposed to go for the story. They don't make games like they used to. I haven't played Dying Light 2 but I bet you it's the same way. Junk everywhere. Junk to the left when you know you're supposed to go right for the story. Junk that helps you upgrade... no, junk that you NEED to use to upgrade. It's only there to drag out games. It's the easy answer to the hard question of "how can we make our game take time to complete?" This poor excuse for lengthening games was first really noticed by me in Metro Exodus. That was fine.. every game wasn't doing that. Now they are. It turned that 5-6 hour game into a 55+ hour game if you want to check out every question mark on the map. It wasn't done badly in Metro Exodus. It's been done badly by every game since.

I actually don't know a single person that disliked Catalyst. But that's because I don't know anyone that even tried the game in the first place. I think the problem of that game was not the quality but the lack of marketing and the fact that it only came out on Origin and not on Steam. I remember watching a gaming podcast in the weeks after it came out and the hosts were like "oh wait, this game already came out?", even though they are all full time variety streamers who usually know about all new releases. I think most people never even tried the game at all because it just flew completely under the radar and many people weren't even aware that it had been released.

He didn't even mention the fact that the first game ended on a cliffhanger (and Catalyst is a non-canon prequel) and they replaced Faith's VA with a shittier one. Also, the new Faith doesn't really look like the old one, and I'm not talking about the clothes. All these things serve to sour it for long time fans, making it hard for them to feel invested, and confusing newer ones when they go and try to figure out the canon. This just makes both parties, new and old, say fuck it and go play Battlefront 2.

I think it all comes down to preferences. I personally love the cyberpunk genre, and Mirror’s Edge’s striking visuals (both the original and Catalyst) combine with the smooth free-running seems perfect for an open-world parkour game to me. Sometimes I just put on a synthwave playlist and just run. For example, the parkour in Dying Light feels really forced and lackluster to me. ME brings you the sinking feeling when you stand on a building’s edge looking down, makes you feel the weight of each jump, and when you successfully execute a hard sequence of moves you feel gratifying. DL’s parkour is basically run along the street, vault over some cars, jump over a wall, climb a small shed, jump back down to the street and keep running. So in the end, even though DL allegedly “has more stuff to do”, exploring the open-world seems like an absolute chore, whereas just running in ME is much more enjoyable, at least to me.

Nonsense, the open world was one of the redeeming features on MEC, which I as a good game, the only problem with the map was the cellular nature of the layout which created bottlenecks, the other key issues that kept it from perfect were that they should've kept the guns as they were in the first game and kept the ledge/small gap sliding, i saw so many places in MEC that og faith would have had no trouble with but because the slipping move was taken out there were these intraversable gaps that even my 210lb frame could've squeezed through, also breaking glass panels is highly missed here, as well as reaction mechanics for civilian npcs, they should've been more interactive. The open world in it's current form is better than the og game where it is the same but less of it, and that wasn't a good thing, and i have gone back and played through the original again after playing through MEC, and as much as i loved the forst game the open world environment is simply better. The edge pole swing is cool, and the combat mechanics are better in MEC, so they got that, though killing the kick glitch is highly bittersweet, though to be fair it was way op, so i don't blame them for getting rid of it, The environments are quite nice actually, I didn't find myself bored of them at all, perhaps confounded by the lack of functionality of the archetecture, the overall appearance of it is nice, the archetectural aesthetic is nice, but the actual floor plans are like something from a strange dream, quite absurd from an architectural planning perspective. If i were ea id do aa few expansion packs for MEC in a lead up to new game that takes the best of both games, gets rid of the skill tree nonsense, adds in zelda style collectible items, (the grappling hook was dope) make an open world that's more conducive to exploration, less cellular in nature, with the above issue like lack of certain moves and guns addressed as well. You want a Mirrors Edge game to do what the original did in its time, give more control and variability to the player in a rooftop playground environment, to encourage movement over beatemup combat

I loved Catalyst and I don't mind not having guns. I can understand why they did it so you couldn't use them... The game is a lot more fast and momentum focused so you're supposed to use your agility and speed to fight enemies, using guns would ruin that. Also fits the theme a bit better because it's way in the future so the guns would not work without the correct registered dna/fingerprint (I think it was mentioned somewhere)

@@banana-bunny i understand the logic, but being able to wirld weapons made some of the slower combat scenarios more fun in general, bouncing from enemy to enemy to skillfully acquire new weapons you knew had limited functionality, really you're still stuck with these types of situations in MEC you just have to trade better combat mechanics for the use of firearms, and frankly it was a mistake to not have both, if only to get in an out of combat quicker. There is the problem of the pendulum swinging too far the other direction, becoming hyperfocused such that gameplay becomes repetitive and stale. If they had carried through with the planned expansions it would be less of an issue, but the variability was a feature not a flaw in the original, one of my strongest memories is shooting through the parking garage at the docks, you've got limited ammo, no refills, and you got shoot your way to.more and better bullets, and even if you do, you can't take it with you, no parkour when youve got a 15-50 lb piece of machined steel in your hands, it just mixed things up in a way that was complimentary to the game. In the extreme If its pure running and no other challenges, then its a screensaver, not a game. Getting a good long run only feels good because its a limited resource, and youve got to finght for it, and use great skill, and the draw of both games. I pray to HaShem the next game bring back guns, but like they were in the first game, limited in ammo and limiting in movement, so you can choose that trade off when its expedient.

The original was rather bold for its time... You have to remember that in 2008 the gaming world was FLOODED with the expectation that every first person game HAD to be big burly men in war torn scenes with lots of chest high walls to hide behind, basically Halo and Gears of War. Then comes this bright game with a unique look to this day that swapped muscle man for a thin parkour woman. I gotta be the only person I know that loves Catalyst more than the original. The original WAS good for its time, but it didn't age well and I really feel like the story was made up in the last 3 weeks of development. Catalyst isn't the next great novel or anything, but the story and world held my attention a lot more. I think DICE shouldn't have gone full open world like they did in Catalyst, but they did good. I have the Catalyst collectors edition statue in my room and sometimes I look at it depressed because I know this game is never going to get a third game. It's always awesome to me whenever I meet someone who loved the series like me.

Mirror's Edge Catalyst is not a bad game. At the core it's still the same as the first + extra stuff that was unnecessary. As far as the story goes I agree, but the first one wasn't interesing either, you didn't play that for the story. It was all about the gameplay and atmosphere and Catalyst still delivers on those.

The fact discussed in the video is just so true. These days studios that can make such great games fear to fail and incur losses just to experiment something new. As a result we gamers are getting same bunch of games with is just fluffed with some boring side quests or open world to fill up the time. The smaller studios free from this try hard to try out new things but for them, budget becomes the problem. I hope something can level this out and we can once again enjoy fresh and new concepts that are nicely implemented. I think this is asking a lot but is it really?

Ask yourself would you gamble to lose your job every year + lose the money you put aside, or would you rather have a save working place without risk that pays well? People complain all the time, nothing is good enough for the hordes of the toxic, entitled gamers today. if you go experimental you get hate, people dont want to preorder either, they dont like DLC and dont want games as a service or ads. There is no way to create experimental, creative games with a AAA budget with the toxic customers mentality, who dont even want to pay.

@@khushjain8679 people arent able to agree on a list either.... wich is actually a good thing. It would be boring if everyone had the same taste. The bad part is the pool of games gets smaller and more low budget the more you stray away from the mainstream. In that case there are "2" main options. Support the small indie, niche games with your money, or develop your own games. Toning down your expectations also helps.

I personally never understood the hate that Catalyst got. I thought it was a huge improvement in all categories. Going back to the original, it felt way more jank and limiting. My only actual complaint about Catalyst was the open world. It wasn't really open, but rather a bunch of linear paths that intersect, with very little activities to do. Plus, there was usually only one or two set paths to get from one area to another. So you end up running the same routs over and over, making it feel really repetitive.

I don't get why Catalyst is even criticised. People act like the first game was perfect and the sequel was the incredibly flawed one. If you think the first game was better, I don't even understand you and you are 100% blinded by nostalgia. The best part of the first game was the parkour mechanics which weren't entirely polished either and were incredibly clunky at parts. Yes, it's also a great looking game for the time of its release and its art design definitely stands out when compared to other games that released then. However, everything else wasn't great. The game only had roughly 6 hours of gameplay, even less if you know the game off by heart. The story was messy with undeveloped characters making the plot twist with Celeste incredibly stupid as it was never even established that we knew her that well and we knew nothing about her other than her name. The story was also told mostly through cutscenes, some that took place physically in the world and others that took place in a stylized cartoon. I felt that this just broke up the gameplay too much for what should have been a fast paced game. Again, the combat was incredibly unsuited to the game, slowing down the gameplay. It was just a husk of a game with one of the best gameplay mechanics ever made. Catalyst only expanded upon all of this. Sure, it wasn't perfect either but everything ME did wrong, Catalyst did better. The parkour mechanics were more fluid and traversal was more diverse with multiple different routes and different moves you could use to get to where you wanted to go. The city felt more detailed and immersive. The gameplay was longer, broken up by time trials and other side missions. The story was more gripping, acting performances were great and the characters, although not fully developed, had more of a solid attachment to the protagonist making you care for them more. The open world, although not as intricate as other games, was a great addition, giving you tons of more gameplay than ME. Oh, and last but not least, the new combat system was way more interesting and allowed you to use your environment to fight which fitted the fast paced gameplay so much better. I just wish people didn't give up on the Mirror's Edge franchise. Catalyst already improved upon the franchise a lot and a third title would have given them the opportunity to finally get it right.

I played both games some months ago to make a review for my channel. The original is still a very enjoyable experience, albeit short. Imho the parkour feels clunky compared to what more modern games have implemented, but it's obvious that they all drew inspiration from it and Assassin's Creed. Catalyst on the other hand improved on all aspects of the movement mechanics, but reaaaally screwed the pooch by making it open-world, particularly in that very uninspired and bland manner. It's a big shame because it has some very good-looking sceneries to admire, but if you experience any degree of open-world fatigue, Mirror's Edge Catalyst will feel like a big chore after a couple of hours into it.
