That kind of 180 should be reserved for an absolutely terrifying outburst from the girl (as cliche as that is), not just the tiniest pushback… EDIT: I don’t know how to spell write apparently, and 500+ people have seen this comment. @@Kyumifun Oh, I agree. But a talented performer can elevate poor dialogue. I'm actually not sure who voices this kid, and I don't care enough about the show to find out, but that's what he's doing here. I'd go so far as to say that he's the more likeable of the two characters *because* of how well he's voiced, at least in this scene, even though we're obviously supposed to hate him. That's a mark in the actor's favor, and a strike against the show, if you're keeping score.

From the clips I've seen, that's definitely the best vocal performance I've heard from anyone on this show, but not even that can save the nonsensical dialogue...

@@djjimmaster8261 To be fair, it is. Until you realize that the way it was delivered sounded genuine. As if Aster actually didn't pick it up because he's slow. The 'dumb' jock trope doesn't really work anymore specially in high guardian spice, a show that's supposed to be progressive, makes fun of people who are slow in the thinking process. His character would make a lot more sense if they either create a scene where he could be redeemable or up the cocky attitude. So in a comedic standpoint, a cocky attitude that makes it look like Aster doesn't really give a shit is funnier than Aster looking like he genuinely forgot her name and feeling guilty for laughing.

I actually liked this guy, his dialogue was pretty okay and his VA sounded genuinely charming. That, and his character design is really dope. They could've made a decent arc for him and give him some importance but instead he's used as "man bad".

I mean...we don't often see the pretty guys getting told off in shows, tbh, especially not ones that are the main character's love interest at first- so I think it's cool that they're showing "just because you start crushing on a guy, doesn't mean he's *actually* a nice person". Ofc, I don't know what they do with him later cuz I haven't yet picked up the rest of the show, but imo his voice acting in this scene alone makes him sound really charming, and like he could get away with saying these lines (plus, guys like these *do* exist irl, believe it or not). Maybe it could be like in the Barbie Pegasus movie where he starts off and becomes better over time, and not just immediately

The entire show’s dialogue is some how worse… seriously, this is like…. One of the better pieces of Dialogue that I’ve seen in the show. However that could be because I’ve only seen the first three episodes before giving up.

He's actually likeable in the "selfish, rude, sexist character who is just annoying but you know he'll grow to be better" kinda way. But of course these writers don't understand the concept of flaws or character growth so he is just "man bad"

Edited for clarification :3 Yeah, i think he is likeable too! If (after this) the teacher pulled him aside to discuss his behaviour, and he genuinely didn’t know anything he said came off as condescending or rude. He was raised in an environment that reinforced that that’s how he should act, with hardly anyone telling him otherwise. And aside from that he’s actually a really heroic person with a very strong sense of morality and justice. He may still be prideful, but he’s not arrogant. He could come back to the group with the teacher and apologize to Rosemary. Explain that he was actually trying to compliment her and went about it the wrong way. He can’t take back what was already said, but he can reword it to properly convey his intentions. He thinks she’s cute and he admires her bravery. Though, he’d probably leave out that he was also trying to look good in front of her. And, now that she knows it doesn’t come from a place of genuine malice and misogyny, she doesn’t mind forming a little rivalry between them to see who would be better in the class. Sure, sometimes he might relapse into what’s he’s used to, but Rosemary (and his future other friends) would be there to help him make back that progress. There could even be an internal conflict when he sees his family again and feels like he doesn’t belong, since no longer agrees with their views. It would show that a toxic mindset is something learned, that it’s good to work towards getting rid of it, and showcase what it’s like to be the only one in your family with a differing opinion. It would also show that Rosemary is understanding and forgiving when confronted with struggles she’s never gone through. Plus, it gives her a strong foundation for a deep platonic or romantic relationship (I like to think that, in this version, he would be her best friend and closest ally)

Like Sokka, because he doesn’t know any better. He didn’t have men around to teach him that women are equally as important for a functioning society, but as he travelled, met new folks and grew wiser, he figured that out for himself. The Kyoshi Warriors were a vital step in his development as a character and it’s a stroke of genius that he encountered them so early on. These writers couldn’t pull off that kind of change if their lives depended on it.

The dialog is missing the context. At the beginning of this episode Aster goes to talk to her (because obviously he is as much into her as the other way around). He asks her "Rhubarb? Right?". And Rosemary doesn't correct him, instead says yes. The same is kinda repeated at the beginning of this field training when they are pared together. Aster: "Rhubarb?" Rosemary: "Yes, that's my name." Now after knowing the context Aster's question is legit.

Rhubarb fits her better than her actual name tbh Rosemary sounds too refined for someone like her

The charisma that they wrote him with to try to make him come off as misogynistic ends up making him the more fun character amongst the boring cast. I love how they show him getting intimidated by her and it's like, how though? What was intimidating about that? I get it if they were already friends (trust me, I've seen huge dudes scared to DEATH of tiny women they love and respect and the women don't even TRY to be intimidating), but they obviously aren't.

It's amazing how in this show's attempt to make the male characters look bad , they actually end up becoming way more likable then than the females. Mainly because they have some semblance of what I can call a "personality".

I feel like the blonde guy, Slime Boy, Snapdragon, and Amaryllis could’ve been a way better main cast than what we have now.

Imma be honest I like the dude. His voice is charming, he delivers his lines somewhat well, he's enjoyable. He makes the show somewhat enjoyable to an extent. Only problem is that he collapses like a little bitch when someone doesn't put with his shit. They could've easily made a charming and fun relationship between these two, where they're both super loud and proud of each other, constantly trying to one up the other, and they come to respect each other and their respective abilities. But no, they took a perfect opportunity to make something good and used it as a "man bad woman strong" scene

It'd work a lot better if he were trying to "fake it 'til you make it" and reinvent himself at High Guardian Academy by pretending to be a super cool and confident ladies' man, but is actually very meek and insecure in reality and was unpopular at his old school/village/etc. But that would require some level of character depth beyond "MAN BAD" and might make him sympathetic or give him an actual character arc...

I've never seen a actual man talk like this. Like ever.

Honestly, all scenes with Astor being a "jerk" makes me feel like Astor is just an average guy (maybe even a nice, cool one) who works as an actor and just ended on the role of the jerk guy, but he can't sell it properly either because he's an inexperienced actor or because he's probably a close, longtime friend of Rosemary (an actress as well) and the whole thing feels awkward for him. I mean, 0:32 is basically he going out of character

The guy's dialog sounds like some woman trying to portray how men act like, who has no idea how men act like.

Even Mark Zuckerberg comes across as more human and believable than this shows dialogue.

What some writers don't get is that you don't have to put a group down to bring up or bring representation to a group. In this situation they make guys seem awful to make woman strong, but you can make good strong characters with a lovely thing callee, subtlety~

It's really hard to hate a character that you're supposed to hate when you give them this many glaring flaws and never reward them for their behavior.

This blonde strawman is constantly shown to be an incompetent dumbass who fails at everything. The closest to a "reward" he gets is Rhubarb falling for him for a bit.

This show is so good the only way they know how to make women strong is to make all man insufferable. And they even fail at that cause the women are insufferable too. Good job Crunchyroll👍

what did you expected when most of the people who worked on this hates men?

Why does the main character feel like the main bad guy? Is that the plot twist? That the main character turns into the villain? Because that'd actually be kind of fun. Wouldn't save the show, but it would at least be cool concept.

He literally goes from "i'm takin the lead" to "i'm a sheep" in _2 seconds,_ after she says abt 5 words of affirmation. You could not get any weaker than this in the argument world. Fairly certain the writers have never interacted with actual, real people, with the exception of each other and the 3 followers they have on their shared Tumblr page.

Exactly. Non agreeable people don't just keel over and let others take charge after one argument, they will stand their ground. This guy went from non agreeable to agreeable in seconds which makes zero sense in the real world. I get the impression that the writers of this show aren't very well socialised.

I honestly love the voice of whoever’s acting him. it’s got a nice charm to it

I knew it. This show was clearly written by the Great Dark Lord Voldemort in order to mess with us muggles brains and make us just want to jump off a bridge. Such an evil yet clever plan...

You know, it's noticeable that they have a mostly female staff since I don't think there's a single male character that has a good VA voice. Like, they just had them record it on a phone and call it a day kind of deal.

That’d be a cool plot twist. I could imagine after getting them lost even further, Rosemary has a revelation and thinks to herself “oh my God. I’m not as good as I thought I was”. She proceeds to sulk and negatively compare herself to her mother, then Aster awkwardly comforts her and confesses to her that he knows he’s not that skilled or bright either, but he acts as though he is because he’s insecure and doesn’t want to seem vulnerable to anyone, and that’s why he’s been acting pretentious for the entire day. He apologises for speaking down to her after that as well. They then bond for a while, and after Rosemary gets a hold of herself, she stands up and offers her hand to Aster with a smile, telling him that they should work together to complete the maze this time. After some hard work where they both fight through the maze and try many different paths, they finally make it out. At the end of the episode, they tell each other that they should train together sometime since they both have a lot to work on. They laugh at their new inside joke and high-five each other, establishing a solid friendship. There. The episode has been fixed. Boom.

I love how this _clearly very confident_ boy becomes instantly intimidated when this non indimidating girl says something that doesn't sound intimidating. Almost like the creators think they can just change character's personalities on specific moments for the sake of making their protagonist look more empowered, huh

From 0:06 to 0:20 he did nothing but spit facts! Rosemary didn't even level, or look at, the compass when she decided to start walking god knows where. His entire dialogue perfectly describes how one dimensional rosemary is as a character lol

@@SamuelSouza-di6nq It's definitely not "kids show" format, considering the blood, gore, cursing, and mature themes. The characters also grow and mature as the series goes on. Some of them start out "wide eyed" but after they face some serious stuff, killing, threats and losses they become more mature as well.

I'm pretty sure people that enjoy anime seriously wouldn't even give this show a 2nd episode.

This show kills me inside. The goal of good writing shouldn't be "we're women" it should be "we're writers regardless of identity".

Every male character in this show sounds like the writers purposely made up a situation in their head where they were victimized, got angry about it, then reflected it unnecessarily into their work.

@@GhostMan407 I'm less forgiving. I think it was a grift from start to finish. The key players wanted work (i.e. a salary) and a credit to plump their resume. I feel sorry for the people further down the creative ladder who were clearly out of their depth. They were told they were ready for prime time and effectively denied the mentoring they needed.

You know those old timey books and movies (heck, even some are being written as recently as today) where it's obvious the woman character is written by a man who has no idea how to write women? This is that, except the genders are reversed

Basically Guy: You're girl so look cute is all do ough ough Girl: I know what I'm doing! Girl power! Is what they were going for here. But anyone with a brain realized that already

Never seen a "yaaas queen" moment more phoned in and desperately forced in any other show than this.

Would this be an anti-feminist show? Trying to prove that an all women cast can do good and then do dogsh1t? I legit don't care who creates anime and honestly the work conditions I just see it as an art and this doesn't feel like one

I think this team just used the term anime either because it's on crunchyroll or because they thought it would pull in more views or maybe both idk. I just know it uses that more modern cartoon aesthetician you see in shows like Star vs the forces of evil & Steven universe. I developed a seizure from having the message repeatedly bashed over my head.

The writing here, makes Sonic.exe sound like a master piece.

His VA is actually really good and I like his voice, if I make my own show one day I might consider having him voice one of the characters.

I wish this was a smart and well constructed scene that made a biting commentary on the pointlessness of chauvinism and the values of equality But it really isn't.

I wish this scene was better written and constructed so we could possibly see the start of a fellowship they can't avoid 'cause they are in the same school grounds and classes so you need to learn cooperation even with people that aren't your besties because you are a guardian or whatever this show's big deal is, where they learn to get over their petty arguments and bad personality traits to be efficient in their fields, overtime they learn to push those bad attitudes aside in exchange of possitive ones that reflect in eachother as they get to know the other and become better people rather than kids that fight over who get's to hold the compass. Eventually resolving in a good message of not be rude to other people when you are working with them, how to identify and change attitudes that you could see as normal but might annoy others, and learn to forgive and grow over old feuds to become the more mature version of yourself. But that would require good writters and not be jugdmental over men. So I guess we go the "girls can do as boys do" route

A good writer would have made them *both* wrong, with the message being that yeah, don't assume women arent good at stuff, but also just because someone is patronizing doesn't mean they're wrong (in this case, it'd be making the guy genuinely correct in his assessment about being a better navigator - just not because he's a guy and she's a girl, but just because he's got more training/understanding of it). Like that arrogant girl power shit isn't good either, especially when a character (the girl) is otherwise shown to be an incompetent dipshit UNTIL its time to show up a male character. Sure, have her get mad at his attitude and dig her heels in, but turn it into character growth where she realizes she does need to acknowledge where and when she isnt the best fit for a role. And then have the guy end up having to correct his own thinking a bit too, by having some situation he didnt expect or know how to handle correctly end up allowing an "untrained"" perspective actually solve the problem. Because that is also a thing - people who are trained in something sometimes get stuck in a narrow way of thinking, and thats a much more interesting and applicable character flaw than "haha girls are just cute and useless" attitude. This way it ends up being an overall "both characters have valuable contributions if they can work together" vibe to it.

Humans don't act like this they don't act like this in the real world this is not how humans interact with women

The thing is, if it were from a guy supposed to be good, him being misogynistic would be a good reason to be hated, just like if he was racist or whatever But if he's s villain or an antagonist then hating on him for that is kinda stupid because he's supposed to be a bad person or at the very least a jerk it's like hating a hero for them being a good person it makes no sense

It's like the creators had a picture of this weird creature none of them ever met IRL called "man" hanging in the room and kept on asking themself: "Are those supposed to talk? How? How are they supposed to behave? Should they be something like talking dogs? Talking gorillas? Someone has an idea?"

He’s been like that through the entire episode. Dumb as a rock, brags about nonexistent accomplishments and trophies, calls Rosemary Rhubarb and is completely, utterly incompetent at literally every single thing. That’s it. That’s his character. And Rosemary gets a crush on him because he’s hot. This is the end of that crush.
