“What The HELL Are We Voting For?” Tory MP Menzies Loses Whip Over Claims About Misuse Of Funds
A Tory MP is being investigated by the party following claims he misused campaign funds.
Mark Menzies also faced allegations he made a late-night call to a 78-year-old aide asking for help because he had been locked up by “bad people” demanding thousands of pounds for his release.
The Fylde MP disputes the allegations reported by The Times but the Conservative Party is looking into the claims and taking them seriously.
According to the newspaper, £14,000 given by donors for use on Tory campaign activities was transferred to Mr Menzies’ personal bank accounts and used for private medical expenses.
The MP, who is one of Rishi Sunak’s trade envoys, is also said to have called his 78-year-old former campaign manager at 3.15am one morning in December, claiming he was locked in a flat and needed £5,000 as a matter of “life and death”.
The sum, which rose to £6,500, was eventually paid by his office manager from her personal bank account and subsequently reimbursed from funds raised from donors in an account named Fylde Westminster Group, it is alleged.
According to a source close to Mr Menzies, the MP had met a man on an online dating website and gone to the man’s flat, before subsequently going with another man to a second address where he continued drinking. He was sick at one point and several people at the address demanded £5,000, claiming it was for cleaning up and other expenses.
The source said Mr Menzies decided to pay them because he was scared of what would happen otherwise, but did not have the funds to transfer the money from his own savings.
In a statement to The Times, Mr Menzies said: “I strongly dispute the allegations put to me. I have fully complied with all the rules for declarations. As there is an investigation ongoing I will not be commenting further.”
A Conservative Party spokesman said: “The Conservative Party is investigating allegations made regarding a Member of Parliament. This process is rightfully confidential.
“The party takes all allegations seriously and will always investigate any matters put to them.”

But aren't even the lowliest backbench MP's on a basic of approx. 90k? Plus expenses. Plus subsidised bars and restaurants. So 6,500 is pocket money to this guy, but he rang a 78 yr old former colleague at 3am to beg as it was "a matter of life or death?" Bizarre doesn't even come close......

Many MPs should have been jailed following the Expenses Scandal. Expenses fiddles are still going on - ridiculous amounts claimed, top end ear buds purchased etc. The expenses scandal needs to be reopened.

As a voter, all I get is leaflets through my door from the political parties telling me all these lovely things they are going to do. I saw one man at my door once for the local election. We don,t know who we vote for, good or bad characters. Only what the Party promise, then it's too late for four year to change anything seems. No one seems to be in charge of our country at all as we have never really broken away from the EU even after going to the country to vote if we leave it or not,we are nether in or out. What a choice we have when the politicians will not heed their voters and we find out they have corruption within their parties and don,t do anything about that either. The unelected bureaucrats are running this country.
Can we end the 'they're all as bad as each other' nonsense? There's only one party this happens to. If you left the party out of the headline, 99.9% of the readers would think 'another Tory sleazebag', and have guessed correctly.

It’s because there’s an ever decreasing pool of reasonable people with right wing politics available to fill the positions. I’m centre but right wingers in my life tend to be more extreme and have questionable beliefs whereas the left leaning people I know, if anything I could accuse them of being a bit soft. No crazy.

You are absolutely right and refreshingly honest, this realisation is what moved me from the left towards the centre. The ideological right is constantly in battle between people with good albeit conservative intentions, and people driven by financial greed/ ambition/ xenophobia
