WHAT THE FUJI!? Why the Fujifilm X100V Just Became Incredibly Popular
Well... social media influencers really lived up to their name this time. If you're wondering why it's tough to get your hands on a Fujifilm X100V lately, it's because TikTok'ers have inspired an enormous second wave of interest for the entire X100 line. This week we'll work on unpacking some of these claims we found that seemed to have sparked this craze! What the FUJI?!

Nice vid. The reason I picked up the x100v is because I had photography gear fatigue. With camera companies just pushing new cameras, lenses, and tech all the time, I felt like I was always second guessing myself if I was using the right gear for the right situation. With the x100v having great color shots straight from the camera, and being a fixed lens, it just puts me in an entirely different state of mind on how to approach photography that I wasn't using before. Limiting the tools at your disposal can make you more creative and can feel more freeing.

Admit it - the real reason was GAS. You could have just as easily slapped a 35mm FOV equivalent lens onto any camera body and used self-discipline not to change lens.

@@yohan2437Maybe if I had another Fuji camera at the time I could of done that, but I didn't, and no other camera company (except maybe Ricoh) comes close to the Straight out of the Camera photos. @@yohan2437 I used to own a X100F maybe 4 years ago... I loved it. It's not just GAS, it was mostly about how small it was. I liked it so much I sold my Nikon DSLR collection of huge lenses, sold the X100F and bought an X-E4 + 3 lenses. Perfect balance to me. It's not just GAS, it's the opposite really. I tried to distill everything down to bare essentials and at the most compact size while still having good quality images. Everyone has their own balancing act.

I mean buy a camera, and stop buying after that. You only get fatigue because you are impulsive and you always want to "upgrade". Take a deep breath, relax and take photos with the camera you have.
I’ve wanted an X100 since they launched. A few months ago I finally decided to buy only to be defeated at the wait times. Ended up putting myself on a waitlist at a camera shop in SLC. Two weeks later they called and had received a few that morning. I rushed up, bought it, and have taken it with me everywhere ever since. Such a fantastic camera.

Still enjoy the camera ? Thinking about getting it
@joeljenkins9424

@@emir0324 I absolutely love it. I still have my Fuji X-T20 + lenses but haven't touched that kit since I picked this up. Where I'm at in my life right - single dad of 3 kids busy working and taking care of them - this is the *perfect* camera for me. Incredible photos. Easy to take with me, very quiet, very unobtrusive. It just works so great for me.
Solid video. To "carbon date" myself, I starting shooting film in 1974 with a Mamiya-Sekor MSX 500 (still have that camera). While it has interchangeable lens capability, glass was very expensive to a high school kid, so the 50mm was my buddy. I was fortunate enough to progress through a lot of film media and was even mentored by a German professional during a stint in the Army. I bought a Nikon D700 due to it's full frame sensor which took me back to some of my film experience. All these years later, I bought an x100F in Brown and it virtually transported me back to 1974. I'm grateful for the nostalgic reference from the camera and love the results I get with it. People have literally stopped me on the street thinking I have a film camera. Everyone's experience with the f100 series seems consistent; I have no doubt that an experienced user will truly see why the hype is there. Happy shooting!
I got my FujiFilm X100s in 2014 just before starting photography school and to this day it’s one of my favourite cameras of all time.
I got my x100v in spring or early summer after waiting a few months. My personal reasons are that I just do not like the photos coming from the iPhone camera (way too oversharpened) but also hate carrying a lot of camera gear. I’m not a professional photographer. I do have a DSLR that I never wanted to take with me because it‘s just too big and heavy. I also love the analog looking pictures the V provides. After using it for months I can tell that I really love using it, carrying it around and even looking at it - it‘s the perfect camera for me and my hobby.
That was a fantastic video production. Thank you so much😊
It's a digital camera that has become a cult object. 100 percent of non photographers can't tell the difference between a photo shot with the camera over a Canon T2i. Ninety eight percent of photographers could likely not tell the difference in a blind test. I've been a photographer for over 60 years, and we are cultists with our cameras. The X100V is a lovely object, nice to hold, that works great for taking photos. When I was a young guy, Leica's and Hasselblad's were our objects of desire. They were beautiful objects with amazing lenses. But, when I acquired them, the images looked pretty much the same as my lowly Nikons and Mamiya's. YMMV

I have a X100S, I love that I can forget about it being digital by using the optical viewfinder and changing parameters by moving physical dials and the aperture ring instead of getting into menus. With the recipes I can forget about editing. Curiously my film cameras from the year 2000 feel in their use more digital than my Fujifilm or my lost Sony R1.
Love mine. Got it early Summer and it’s been a great upgrade from my iPhone. I did pay more than retail to be able to get it in my hands faster but it was worth it to me. Brought back the joy of photography.
This all dovetails into Fuji's unique ability to make a series of amazing rangefinder cameras. from the X100 to the XE series and to my very loved X-Pro3 (and 2) Fuji has just nailed it. I shoot professionally with Fuji XT series but if I can, I go to the XPRO. I can fully trust the lenses and they fit on everything (100V excluded of course). But the experience is so satisfying, the tactile feel of the rangefinders is special, only to be rivaled by Leica, another company that invests in the passion of photography. Great job Fuji, may you sell a million X100V's. Thats the reward of taking chances.
I have been a Canon shooter for years. A few months back I decided to switch to a new body, I was looking at the Sony a6600 but one night I saw a used silver XT-3 and fell in love with it, after a few weeks I decided that I want something a bit smaller so I ended up with the XE-4 which is as close to the X100V as you can get without having to eat ramen for a month.
Cameras like these should never be underestimated for their role in skill development; if you shoot more, you WILL become a better photographer (even without editing your photos)!
This is a super fun and versatile camera that definitely feels great to shoot on with amazing photos straight out of camera. But so does any modern Fuji camera. It's too bad that most people won't do a bit of additional research and realize they can pick up a number of other Fuji interchangeable lens cameras that are far more versatile, like the X-E4, XT-4, or brand new XT-5, throw on an equivalent 35mm lens that you never take off, and end up paying a couple hundred bucks less than an X100v. I'm currently debating picking up a used XT-4 or waiting a few months and picking up a used XT-5 when the prices come down a bit.
thanks for the video, I've been shooting on x-t cameras for close to 10 years now, and was curious to see what all the fuss was about with the x100 series recently, and your video solved that curiosity.
Great review - it’s a terrific camera. Almost bought the 1st version 10 years ago, but opted for the Sony RX1, which I’m still using. BTW - they are a steal one the used market.
When I was a kid I always wanted one of those little Steam engine models, red boiler with the brass piston and flywheel. My X100v is kinda my grown up version of that steam engine. It’s kind of a technology and design work of art. I love that aspect of it and I love the whole feel and function of the “x” lineup. It’s kinda like my Sunday good clothes camera. And, as you aptly described, it does a great job of what it’s designed to do. Thanks! Great review. I never knew about the Tictoc connection. Best, JD
X100V has been popular since it came out. It’s been sold out for almost a year. People have already been selling it used with a high price tag since it’s not available at any retail stores. Not because of some TikTok videos. It’s still regular price on backorder from stores.

Oh, there are many rangefinder-like digital camera alternatives. If the goal is to look camera chic above all, get the Olympus Pen F. If the goal is utility in a photographic tool, the Panasonic GX-85 and GX-9 are superb. I've been using a GX-85 for many years now. If the goal is for truly, whole hog retro, go pick up the French made Pixii. If the goal is to go truly lux (on the cheap) pick up the Leica XL (Typ 601).
I've had 3 generations of the X100. By far my favorite digital camera and the one I started my photo career on. It's high enough quality & resolution for prints and is the best to have in your ' back pocket' for traveling and just ease-of-use. Carrying around a huge camera and a variety of lenses gets pretty old after a while!
Thanks! I’ve had this camera for two years and everything you’ve said is spot on!
I like walking around with my giant version of this - GFX 50R + GF 50mm 3.5
Got an x100v two years ago. It is truly excellent for street , travel, landscape and daily use. It has improved me greatly as a photographer. I don't think I will ever let it go.
I picked up my X100V when it came out. I needed a walking-around camera. I’m a long time pro and like to have a camera around but if I carry my work cameras it feels like work. The iPhone is just not good enough sometimes. This little thing is the perfect camera for pros like me who want a camera on days off. And really, the best thing about it to me is that it’s a straight shot from shutter to brain. There’s no tech noise in between. It feels natural in the hand and lets me just snag what I see with no pressure to make anyone happy but me.
I got my x100V used with a shutter count of only 1500 at a $850 price tag - that was last winter. I'm so glad I got mine when I did - it's so much fun and it's helping me save money so I'm not spending big bucks on film all the time!
Exactly :) I found through X100 my love to photography again :) I was able to buy xpro3 with price of X100V, so i did it. Pro is amazing camera. Much faster than 100F ... but sometimes I really miss that simplicity of non-changeable lens and smaller body at all :) Love 4ever :)
I also have the Fujica. my problem is that the camera rewinds by itself after about 9 photos. No matter what kind of film I have in it. Do you have an idea what the problem could be or do you know someone I can write to? Many Thanks ❤
Excellent review ✅
Long time Canon photo and video shooter. Finally wanted to go mirrorless and wasn't liking Canon's offering and hate Sony's menus so decided to see who else was out there. Was blown away that Fujifilm was under the radar. Got an XT-4 and am completely happy with my decision. Vintage looks was the icing on the cake.
Here is why: because everyone is making a video claiming it's popular. Sure, it's great. But so is the X T30 II. If enough people hype it, it becomes a hype.

I just got the XT30ii and it’s amazing ! I wanted the 100v, maybe I got sucked in by the hype. So far I’ve not regretted buying the XT30ii and save a bit of cash 👍
If you hold the little rocker arm down for a couple seconds you can activate ND as well. I forget what direction but just try it you'll see.
Got the X100V back when it first launched. Have always used Fuji, recently bought an X-T4 and have been considering selling the X100V as I can’t see myself using it much and would like the money. Now the prices and demand have shot up just as I consider selling, is this a sign to sell or a sign to keep?
Very nice! Concise and informative. I just got a X-E2 which I'm pairing w a 27mm 2.8 lens. Would have loved the x100v, but needed the lens to give me closer to what the eye sees. This combo is pretty close to the 100v form factor. I actually purchased an X-T3 first... Too bulky and heavy w that battery grip! Coming from full frame Nikon - I'm totally impressed and excited to get (re) started.
I started off with a T and over the past few years, I’m blessed to own plenty of expensive rangefinders. The m6, Contax g2, and xpan. Used the xpro3 briefly. But I always go to the m6 since there isn’t any electronics to distract me and I feel one with my camera. The V is great and I’m glad to see the buzz it’s getting when it was a niche camera when I played with the T.
I’m a beginner to photography. I’m thinking about Fujifilm x100v and XT-30ii. Which one should I get?
As a now long term Fuji user, welcome to the gang new users! I rarely find myself editing my photos as much as well. FujiX weekly really did a lot of magic with those sims.
High speed sync flash (fill with bright bg) is also great. Agree on the hypster effect. About 50% of the time out with my X100 I get questions about the camera.
As an XPRO user, I found x100v to be too small for my hands so I sold mine. I am now waiting for Xpro4 release.
I bought one a couple weeks back… needless to say I love it❤
I got a Fujifilm E4 yesterday. I've been looking to get into photography for a long time, always just been a mobile photographer. Looked at Sony seriously but Fujifilm came up a lot, liked the vintage styling, the ability to not have to edit photos, the brand overall seemed fun too. I'm not a photographer, don't plan on doing it professionally in any capacity and tbh the Fujifilm cameras just feel more fun. I got it for that reason, not the 100v tho, I want the ability to play with different lenses.

It feels like I wrote this comment the way I relate to it lol. I got my xe4 a few months ago for the exact same reasons you mentioned. I was looking to get into photography, the vintage look and the film simulation made me decide to go with fujifilm instead of the other brands. And the ability to play with different lenses is what made me choose the xe4 over the x100v.
I can’t speak for it because I can’t get one at retail but seems like influences are definitely the reason for its popularity. I’m sure it’s a great camera on its own right but the fact you can’t get one anywhere for retail is just ridiculous.
From what I’ve seen this camera was loved by Fuji folks for some time but tik tok is basically riding the wave of film cameras and that aesthetic. Dropping 1.4k+ for a camera you don’t really know about is wild…
I tested the Fujifilm X100V last night and everything I like about point and shoot she has it and that extra for amateur photographers trying to grow in a professional way.
I have a Sony a7iii and I’m thinking about getting this camera as a secondary camera. The main reason is the one that you talked about, the best camera is the one that you have with you. I want something that’s more portable and that I can bring with me every single day, without being a burden.
Amazing how people own so many different cameras
Those three topics are spot on 👍👍👍
I’m so happy I got my hands on mine before the surge in popularity. It was literally within a month before and all of a sudden everyone was asking how I got mine 😅
it’s a little bit of an older model but i have an xe2 as my rangefinder style camera. it’s got interchangeable lens but if you just smack a little pancake lens on it’s pretty much a point and shoot. i found it at a pawn shop for $20 and i genuinely think the people that worked there thought it was a film camera

Hey there! Really well made video! I am one of the people who recently made a video on this camera that has seen some pretty big success on short-form and I’m not sure I agree with the sentiment that TikTok is fully to blame. Ignoring the global supply chain shortages the entire world is facing and placing blame on creators who wanted to make a fun video covering all the topics you yourself agreed with in this video, seems a bit of a reach. I’m glad you enjoy the camera as much as I do but we should cover all aspects of this and not just the “tiktok bad blame them for high prices” It creates a toxic environment in comments for people like myself who just love this camera and want to make creative content around it. Now some might find it freeing to not be able to take all the shots one could if one had interchangeable lenses; they may lie to themselves about zooming with their feet. With 35mm you need to be right in there, in their face. You do. With a 50 much less so, but it's not always wide enough for a scene. Nowadays using any camera stands out in public, even in tourist areas. You can use a phone, nobody cares, it's stealthy, no camera is stealthy today. That's a problem when you have to get in close. It's a bigger problem the bigger you are and if you are male. So, as a tool for people with such a camera today you need a specific technique depending on if you are 6' 4" or 5" 5" or male or female and your age will enter into it, as will your manner of dress, the type of "crowd" and the location. In the distant past, a rangefinder was SO very non-threating it was incredible, while an SLR was a real camera. The public did not take a rangefinder seriously, kind of like smart phones today. But things are different now. I am a large human being. Depending on where I am I fit in better or worse due to how notably different I am in stature and size. In the US today, I am not too too extraordinary, but yet I am in Quebec Canada, there I am a freak of nature akin to a Yeti. I draw stares in Quebec, not so much in the US. So, cameras and the photographer and the environment and the crowd all go into the soup of what can be created, and how and when. All of that is much more than any one camera no matter how many trendy "influencers" from hell push it. Photography is a dynamic multifaceted personal thing whether done well, poorly, or for reasons of convenience or whatever. Being a photographer can be like being a stage performer, you need to know the crowd and the room. You need to know how to work with them, because in the end, giant or pygmy you are an "influencer" right there. In research this is called testing effect: the impact of the test itself on the results. The humans are the thing that make it. No art without an artist.

Yep. I started my Fuji journey with the X100F and very good intentions to marry myself to a single focal length. Soon, I realized that I rarely have the time, patience and bravado to "zoom with my feet" consistently. I now own most of the Fuji lens collection and at least one each of X-Pro, X-E, and X-T bodies. When I do know precisely what I want to capture or when I want to limit myself to a prime lens, I just slap it on my X-Pro3 or X-E4, but I often also carry a 16-80 or 18-135 in my bag as backup.
Great video. However I disagree that it is more of an entry level or not a pro camera. It has pretty well all of the features of an X-pro and then some. It is a great first camera for anyone starting out, sure, but it also has permanent place in my pro kit. I've produced more lead images from this camera purely because it is always on me. The results are just as good as the other fuji camera because they use the same sensor.
Just doubled my money on my daily driven X100F. Thanks Tiktok
"Just"? If you look at google trend, it blew up at the end of 2020. The price has been steady 200%+ higher all of 2021. Now, its at its peak of hype where resellers are legit making PS5 scalper money. But yeah tik tok is the devil of all good things
It just became incredibly popular because Fuji is investing on marketing with “influencers”. There must be a new model coming out soon.
I owned one for the best part of two years. Then I released I was a long lens type of guy. So I sold it a bought a 100-400mm. Different strokes for different folks. lovely camera but just not for me. keep up the good work be lucky stay safe.
It has everything to do with it being an incredible camera and nothing to do with TikTok.
X100 has unique image quality. Majority of these people who hyped prices won't even get it.
Why “just”?
I must be the only one who hates this camera, sold my dslr gear for one and pretty much stopped shooting once I got it. Looks the part is about the only thing going for it. Don’t waste your money buying one.
Ha. I can avoid the X100V GAS as I am enjoying ownership of an Olympus Pen F - pretty much the same value proposition - and interchangeable lenses.
Who would pay $1400 for a point in shoot?! I mean it is a cool nostalgic looking camera but c'mon now....
A great camera at a great price, supply chain issues and basic economics. Let’s not over think this for likes… New prices are not up, by reputable dealers at least. Used are going for $1400-1800 currently. It’s been hard to find for over a year now.
How does a camera get so many nicks?
