The "no I'm not gonna tell you how to do it part" is spot on. I work in plumbing, licensed journeyman. I know the way the pipes are required to go in, and my boss will look at the way I've done things (which will pass the inspection) and go "I'd have done that differently. No no, it'll work, but it's not how I'd do it". I suggested that we start using drawn plans as a part of the estimate and he refuses because "nobody would use it anyway". We go off-script because we have no script, but he doesn't wanna make a script because we don't stick to the one in his head that he hasn't shown anyone.

My foreman COMPLAINED to us about how his house only sold for 20% over asking price. I was literally in a hole in the ground boring a hole into an existing plumbing system, thousands of gallons worth of shit, piss, semen, blood, whatever-else-people-flush, etc. about to explode in all directions. This dude was standing 20 feet plus away from the hole talking about how he only got "so many thousands" over asking price for his house. I immediately found a different company to work for. @@dodgro8342 I mean, it is actually that simple. Saying the labor market is full and there aren't enough companies is just an excuse to not make your life better. If you do thirty minutes of job applications a day, and you don't have a new job in less than two weeks, your resume just sucks.

I'm the foreman for a crew and I always get in there with the guys and lead by example. If they need time off, I cover for them. I take care of my workers. Actually I'm not a foreman of anything and I've never worked construction in my life. If was, I probably wouldn't do either of those things.

Can't relate. My old man was both self-employed and on site manager in house painting and he was the hardest worker. He always made sure he personally checked the work. Most often, he did most of it. He was always the boss that preferred doing the hard work himself to ensure it went smoothly.
