I don't know why netflix did that exactly, but I believe it is because red light green light is the Western version of the game. So I guess they did that to help the audience understand.

"Green light, red light" is not the correct translation, but in the early 90's as children's education abroad, the song "Green light, red light" It is similar to the old Korean traditional game "Mugunghwa flower bloomed", but "Red light" the host It means that the road signal is a red light, so do not cross it because there is a car passing by. It means that you can cross the signal if it is "green light." I think they fixed the movie subtitles with "Green Light, Red Light"

The Mugunghwa flower, aka Rose of Sharon, is the national flower of Korea. As a national symbol it also became a symbol of resistance and patriotism during the Japanese occupation of Korea and as such came under fire from the Japanese colonial government who struck down on anything that could promote patriotism among the Koreans. Mentioning the Mugunghwa flower was therefore dangerous and the story goes that since children were under a somewhat lesser threat of being harmed by occupying armed forces than an adult would be if uttering the word Mugunghwa they could spread the sentiment of patriotism at the playgrounds by saying the phrase that the doll in Squid Game says.

Wow, I knew it was something like this. It just goes with all the other times children nursery rhymes were created, to tell the story of horrible events that happened long ago. One example being the song 'Ring-a-Ring-a-Roses', which is a nursery rhyme created for children, that tells the story of the Great Plague that affected London in 1665. This is such interesting and educating information. Thank you so much for sharing it. :-)

Note to self: Do not play Red Light/Green Light in Finland

As a Korean person, when I heard that, it’s really funny how so many people thinks it’s red light, green light in Korean when it’s not true. The literal translation is literally the hibiscus flower bloomed(mugunghwa is also known as the common hibiscus which is the national flower of South Korea). The word for red light is 빨간색깔불(ppalgan-saekael-bul) and the word for green light is 초록색깔불(cholog-saekael-bul) the literal word for red light and green light will be 초록불 and 빨간불, but it wouldn’t make sense to a lot of Koreans, so we usually put 색깔 which means color in Korean. Sometimes 빨간불 is acceptable same with 초록불 if you’re saying it fast

I understand why it what simplified to red light green light ... Even in the English version they left the song in .. But put red light at the end of the song green light when it turns it's head around ... Which was fair in my opinion ... I thought it sang so that they at least know how long it's going to take for it to turn it's head around... It's a cute song and I like when the doll uses a baby girls voice .. It just rounds it up nicely .. At least I know what the song says but I'd rather that part not be translated.

@@BonnieSypula-ts7oo makes me think of this poem i read in french about a squad of resistance fighters during WW2 getting executed by firing squad, and there was this line like "They were three-and-twenty when the rifles bloomed". That line always stuck with me because of the pretty imagery for a deadly action

In Japan the words of the game are: ' darumasan ga koronda!' which means 'Mr daruma tripped/fell'. It's 10 syllables long so at the start when you say it slowly you have about 10 seconds. Daruma is the red, white and black wishing doll with no pupils. I think the name at least originates from the Buddhist 'dharma'. You make a wish as you draw in one pupil with a pen, then draw him his other one when the wish is granted.

I feel like for English, they should make it something like "Traffic light is green, but now it turns red" to the tune of the Korean version Instead of just "Red liiiight. GREEN LIGHT." Because that's totally unexpected and you wouldn't know the time frame of when to halt.

In Spanish, they say: luz verde, ya puedes correr y parar. Literally: green light, you can already run and stop. But the original Spanish version, in my experience, the one which I used to play, is called “1, 2, 3, caravana es”. Literally: 1, 2, 3, van it is. It is because tres (three) and es (is) rhymes in Spanish.

in England, when we play "red light green light" the phrase we use is "What's the time, Mr.Wolf?" And then the wolf says a number from 1 to 12, and that’s how many seconds we have to run towards the finish line.

I'm Thai American. I only know Red Light, Green Light. My family in Thailand having been playing their own Squid Games. So they've been playing A-E-I-O-U as Red Light. So it's so cool to see how other countries play the same games

So weird to see that every language has a different verse! This is called "The English Hideout" in Spain. We say "1, 2, 3, escondite inglés" ("1,2,3, that's the English hideout!"). Number three (tres) and the word English (inglés) rhyme, that's why.

In Czech we say cukr, káva, limonáda, čaj, rum, bum. Seems more fitting as it means sugar, coffee, lemonade, tea, rum, bum.🙂 No surprise it starts shooting...

In the Dutch equivalent of this game children say 'Anne-Maria koekoek', Anne-Maria being a name and 'koekoek' I think is similar to 'koekeloeren' which means something like 'to peep'.

I have Pakistani friends they play a similar game called"Chocolate chocolate" The starting of the game is the same just say "chocolate chocolate" and once you are very much near the seeker they ask for flavor basically something like this : Player: What flavor ice cream do you want? Seeker: strawberry Player: LOOK! THERE ! *points behind* Seeker: *looks behind* (Has to) Player: *taps the player and runs back to position* then the seeker chases them and catches the players whoever is caught will be eliminated.

Oh! Thats what it says. Nice explanation! But like whats the meaning? Of the flower blooming? Just wondering 😅

in croatia kids say "crvena kraljica jedan dva tri" which translates to "red queen 1 2 3" which makes about as much sense as the korean song in the context of the game so there's that😃

In Germany we play this game too. It’s translated as ‘1,2,3 ox on the hill’. The ox is the person who turns around and catches the players moving. 🤣

In the UK we say "what's the time Mr Wolf?" Then the counter (or the doll in this case) says a time eg "4 o'clock" and we have to take 4 steps forward before they turn around :)

We say "Alondi London ghori baje ton ton ek dui tin" in Bangladesh. Which means " alondi London watch is ringing ton ton 1 2 3". We also use " alondi London taka poysha jhon jhon ek dui tin" means " alondi London money/coins jhon jhon 1 2 3".

I'm Korean and I guess it is becuase "green light red light" is more clear for foreigners to understand the rule of the game. if the subtitle was "Mugunghwa flower bloomed" just like the actual meaning, people who are not familiar with this game would not easily understand that players should stop when the robot finished reading the sentence.

I m glad to know u r a korean I always wanted to ask, like what does it mean when someone says " u should master hanguel first" I m so down to learn korean and to know bout korean culture 💜 but I hv no korean known to help me out I know that korean is called hanguel by natives and I do know the letters (I mean alphabets) But whenever I see a video or read somewhere it says that to learn korean u need to master hanguel, like what does that mean??😞

in turkey we say “drum, clarion one two tree” but ig its not the same everywhere when i asked my parents how they used to play it they told me a whole different verse that i didn’t know about. it changes

It just shows you that you should always watch a TV show or movie in its native language with your countries subtitles. I unfortunately watched the USA dubbed version and it was dreadfully bad (episode 1). I couldn't work out how they knew when to stop. Tuned into Korean language and discovered it was this phrase that they were running to. Everything was so much better from there on!

I wonder how did others pronounced it in their own way 😂 before watching this video 😂

In hindi ( India ) we say- hum sab khele red light green light ye khel hai nirala (we all play red light green light this game is unique )

In Swedish the game is called "Röda lyktan stopp" (Red lantern stop) and the doll would be saying "1, 2, 3, röda lyktan stopp" . But the subtitles just translated the English "Green Light, Red Light" literally...

It all makes so much sense now! They shoot people like it’s the red flowers blooming everywhere

In my country the game is called mirror and we don't say anything we just turn around when its "red light". I'm finnish. Edit: also sometimes in the game there can be a rule that you have to say the name of the person you noticed moving

Although short, it's a beautiful song about Korea's national flower! A pity that they translated it as red light, greenlight.

In hebrew we say: "one, two, three pickled herring" As if when you stay still you're like a pickled herring. BTW no one here loves or even eats pickled herrings
