I loved R.C. Sproul's teaching and R.C. himself greatly. I often go back to look at his videos again and always find them wonderfully edifying.

This man left us with such wealth of gospel truth that we may never get to the end of it. He wouldn't say it of himself so I will say it, RC Sproul was a giant of the faith worthy to be mentioned in the same breath along with Calvin, Edwards, Luther etc. I can't wait to meet him in glory.

An anecdote or analogue in the hands of a master teacher is a whole meal to the soul.

Even Jesus was tempted by satan and Jesus rebuked Him with the Word of God on every level before He entered his Earthly ministry...satan is a real deceiver and prowls around like a roaring lion seeking those he will destroy. RC Sproul has now passed on and he was a brilliant teacher.. Thank you.

Wrong. How could he have been tempted if he was perfect? Could God fail in his mission?

I just preached on this, Sunday 11 FEB 2024. I read Isaiah 14 3-23 and Ezekiel 28 11-19; making a particular point that in Jude, Michael didn’t try to oppose satan; rather states the Lord rebuke you. Thus is not to build satan up, but to show, he is the most powerful being God ever created, and we are no match for him without a firm relationship with Christ through the power of the Holy Spirit. RC mentioned what they did in medieval times to make fun of satan. I would postulate the theory that satan had them do that to counter how people perceive the threat he is. Thus fulfilling the scripture that he deceived them as he would the elect if possible.

@@chernetayelelole2794 he is, and you’re right, a single angel backed by the power of God will lock him away. In Job chapter one, we find satan can kill, cause earthquakes, tornadoes, and illnesses. Else God would not have had to restrict him from killing Job. Satan is the most powerful being God created, but he is no match to the power of God. Even though with the war in heaven, and Michael with his angels prevailed over satan and his angels; in Jude, Michael alone deferred to the Lord to rebuke satan. The difference is, Michael knew and accepted that God empowered him to overcome satan, but he did not let that cause him to fall due to pride as satan had.

What I said was straight from scripture concerning satan being the highest and most powerful being God created. Isaiah 14 and Ezekiel 28 speak of his position and his fall Genesis 3 God Himself states satan will bruise the heel of Jesus, but Jesus will bruise satan’s head - he could never lest God allowed it, and He did allow it In Job - God turned everything over to satan except Job’s life, and as such he caused the great wind (tornado) that killed Job’s children Matthew 4, satan tempted Christ; yet every other encounter with a fallen angel / demon, they feared and trembled at the very presence of Christ Paul refers to satan as the god (little g) of this world Jude states there is contention between Michael and satan, and Michael defers to God to rebuke satan Revelation 12 when he drew a third of the angels to follow him in rebellion against God And in Job and Peter both we find satan roaming the earth seeking whom he can effect, because he is not Omni anything, he must transverse the earth himself or through his minions I’m sorry you all don’t like the scriptures that speak of God’s greatest created being, but God calls Lucifer / satan *the* anointed cherub, not just a cherub (which are the highest rank of angels) not just an anointed cherub, but the anointed cherub.

I found this very helpful. I remember a 1940s movie - Claude Rains played a judge & throughout movie Rains has a tiny devil w/ horns & pitchfork on 1 shoulder & angel on other both speaking w/ him-so Satan is seen as tiny. images like this trivialized his size to us. Jolted by Billy Graham comment as other poster below was. Assuredly RC did not mean that literally--but it may literally have been true. I read Billy Graham crusades sent Catholics who went forward back to Catholic churches & Jews who went forward back to synagogues. No wonder everybody liked him. Some information available about Billy Graham is quite troubling. I believe he meant well but was caught in a vise (perhaps a pun...). Sorry if name icon comes up 2x. God ordains whatever He wants and satan has to he given permission. The point of that is for 1. To give us the reader the illistration that the devil temps us but there are some...few.. who pass God's test 2. To show Job that his belief in God (despite even his own WIFE/Family telling him he was crazy) didn't go in vain. 3. To show satan that there are some that won't be easily fooled and that he isn't going to infiltrate everybody straight to hell.

But did not God create Satan? Why didn't God have the forsight to know how Satan would turn out?

So why did God allow his innocent creation, who knew no better, to be poisoned by an evil creation of his, then holding us responsible for being deceived and born broken. If he and Jesus are sinless and unable to sin, like a "robot", why didn't he make us sinless too, instead of creating a system where almost everyone is eternally damned?

With respect brother. God is eternal and not bound to linear time. He knows the end from the beginning. He cannot be constrained by the human concepts of free will and fairness. To suggest otherwise denies his sovreignty and makes him subject to the will of man. Its a paradox. Just like all great doctrines in the Bible.

@@stevemathew1453 No Calvinism makes it a paradox, conundrum & mystery. Scripture is true, not Calvinism. Calvin said "Some are doomed from the womb". No one in scripture is irresistibly regenerated & no one in scripture has a divine decree of reprobation upon them with no hope or opportunity of being reconciled to God thru Christ. Calvinists conflate God's sovereignty with absolute determinism. God's foreknowledge of all events does not make Him the causal agent of all events (see Jeremiah 19:5 for one of many examples)

What are you saying? Christians believe in the writings of the Holy Bible. It tells us what we need to know about God and creation. It tells us that Jesus was God incarnate. That He came to reconcile us back to God as the mediator between God and man. God is Holy and sin cannot nor nothing unclean approach His presence without a cleansing, purification first. Jesus was the pure sacrifice . He took our sins upon Himself. He was the pure, innocent sacrifice. As an example. Think of some heavily guarded positions. Nothing nor anyone can approach that individual without first going through security.

It's bizarre that RC believes 5 point Calvinism. 5 point Calvinism teaches God is completely sovereign. It teaches He is SO sovereign that God does not allow anyone or anything to make independent choices. It teaches God pulls everyone's strings. No one can choose anything?!? 😕 Well then, why preach? If people don't believe in the Devil.... it is because God made them NOT believe in the Devil. They cannot change their mind if 5 point Calvinism is true. It is a ludicrous religion. It makes no sense from the floor up. Such a brilliant man who wasted so many years preaching nonsense. We all choose every moment, every day to submit or reject our Savior.

So when a child gets molested it's God's plan? God's fault? That's sick dude. When God tells us in His Word that we CAN choose.... that's pretty simple. That means we can choose. "I set before you life and death. Good and evil. Choose life." All these complaints about evil make no sense of God is pulling people's strings. There can be no repentance of God does not empower us to be able to turn. It's not a mystery like RC says it is. It's a mystery to those who twist God's Word to promote man made theology, Calvinism. @RStark-ek7mh - Most people who spend time in God's Word know the principle of "firsts". If you want to know the definition or explanation of a word in the Bible you go to the first place it talks about the word. Isa 42:1 Jesus Christ is the Elect. If you are in The Word of God, living in it, by it, then you are in Christ. If you are in Christ, you are Elect. It's not random, arbitrary or mysterious. You are following Jesus. It's trusting Christ. If you're living in sin, you cannot possibly say you're trusting Christ. If you are living a life of repentance, you are trusting Christ. But that's impossible if you cannot make your own decisions, turn from your sin. Making God guilty of your sin is blasphemy. God does not pull your strings. God leads. Gala "Be ye led of the Spirit..." and you will not fulfill the will of the flesh. That's choice. Before or after you are saved, we have choices every moment, every day. That's the entire reason Jesus said "Follow Me." Otherwise He would've said "Don't even try to follow Me. I'm going to drag you in." Commandments always imply choice. One explanation makes 100% sense. The other is completely nonsense. Calvinism makes ZERO sense.

Why didn’t/doesn’t/wouldn’t Satan read scripture the way the world does and NOT do what is prophesied of him and make God and his word unreliable? It is impossible to believe that an angel of high order and his untold number of followers (“1/3rd of the heavenly angels” as taught) are too stupid to realize the simplicity of this ploy that would make God and his word unreliable. It is also impossible to believe that God would risk his sovereignty on the whiles of an emotionally and/or mentally unstable being. It is impossible for Satan to be a fallen heavenly angel, because if he is all this angel must do is absolutely nothing to cause even just one of God’s prophesies to come about, and then the bible (KJV) becomes unreliable and false, do this and many more people would turn their backs on God than ever would because of any evil that satan could do. Also, what prevents another angel from rebelling in the eternal future, and another, and another, etc.? Satan is not a fallen angel; he is not a self-aware being. The bible (KJV) tells us he is a power and a principality. This fact proves that the world is not “rightly dividing the word of truth”. This fabled Satan that has considerable intelligence should know that all he must do is sit back and do nothing to bring about even just one of God’s prophecies, then at best God and his word become unreliable and then God is as fallible as man and no God. Or at worst God becomes the same as your fabled Satan “a liar” and is just a power hungry being. And this would leave 2 billion+ professing Christians without a leg to stand on, not mention those that are asleep in the lord. To “rightly divide (separate) the word of truth” you must separate fact from fable, truth from tale, and principle from parable. When you sincerely study the bible (KJV) the Holy Spirit will show you that Satan is a power and a principality in high places. In more than one instance in the bible (KJV) high places is referred to as governing seats and rulers, it is not some other dimension with literal ghouls and spirits floating around waiting for a vulnerable human to consume. Satan is not the only inanimate personified by the bible(KJV), Solomon personified wisdom and speaks for her, Prov 1:22-33 (KJV), Jesus personified the Word and speaks for it, John 17:1-5 (KJV) As for “prince of the power of the air”, when you enter a house with undisciplined and disobedient children you can feel the contention and strife in the air, when you go to a neighborhood ran by gangs you can feel the tension and fear in the air, and every day more and more you can feel the division and hate in this nation (U.S.A.) the great “liar”, “in God we trust” and “one nation under God”. When someone is tempted to do something that they know is wrong they have a little debate in their head and lie to themselves and make excuses to justify the action they want to take. Just like the story of Eve and the talking serpent. A talking serpent is a fable; 2 Tim 4:4 (KJV). A talking serpent symbolic of the lust of the flesh; is truth. The power of those that give into this serpent is what God calls Satan, or to be more specific, the power of those that use and abuse the laws of God “to steal, and to kill, and to destroy” the poor, fatherless, and widows, is what God calls Satan. A principality (a government). And any who support him, through lies or evil plans (mind), or with works (hands) are his angels. Hence the mark of the beast. All glory to God. Amen

Satan tried. And failed because he is a created being and not omniscient. Here is how unbelievably powerful that God is. He gave every created being free will. He does not interfere with that freedom EVER. And yet He still accomplishes His ultimate plan in spite of that. God does not exist in time. He knows everything and knows every choice that will be made. His will is accomplished simply because of probability. If an action has to occur it will because if 100 fail the 101st will do it. A being without the bounds of time can be ultimately patient. My Dad used to say that inventors were probably not due the accolades they received because someone was bound to have done it eventually. If the Wright brothers has not succeeded at KittyHawk and had hung it up... the heavy than air flying machine would still have been eventually invented. Satan thought he'd won when he had Yeshua ( Jesus ) crucified. His pride in his accomplishment blinded him to the fact that God had already said that Jesus would be resurrected and defeat death. Satan has to play by rules and we aren't privy to all of them. I have heard your argument before many times and you have to understand that Satan is merely a created being that still has to operate inside of time and there is no action he can perform that an omniscient Creator cannot counter. And for icing on the cake... our Creator does it without violating our free will.

I read a lot of text about the Pharisees whose father is satan, such as “beware of the leaven of the Pharisees” Also the “revelation of Jesus Christ” has much teaching about the beast Also anything we know about satan has come from the scriptures which the scripture is the word of God that became flesh. Being in the trinity Jesus had a pretty big role in the inspiration of scripture Which speaks quite a bit about satan, the deceiver, that’s how we can know his name is Lucifer. So basically Jesus taught about him from genesis to revelation.

You're unhappy with the world and you've looked for ready-made solutions to some questions. Just like the well known ad for a financial service... "It's my money and I want it NOW!" Except you're saying "It's my world and I want answers now." Impatience in human history has got countless people into trouble. For example, 2000 years ago everyone just HAD to have an answer to the importance of being human. Well, heck, the Sun circles around us so we must be at the center of the universe. People just had to have an answer even before all the evidence was in. And a lot of mistakes have been made due to not waiting until convincing evidence was presented. The god problem is the same. People don't like what they've been dealt in the real world. They get a sense of insecurity because they just have to know the "truth". Even if they have to make up the "truth". Beginning of the universe? The big bang? How did it all come about? Well... if one wants to believe anything they should at least base conclusions upon the best known empirical evidence instead of making up things that ease their minds. In fact the natural world doesn't care about your or anyone else's mind. The natural world just IS. And even IF there is no concrete answer to where everything came from, you'll never have an accurate answer if you keep relying upon the supernatural. Because the supernatural [as theists claim] does fall outside the natural universe and no data can be extracted from that place. Thus no reliable answer will ever be had. So you keep believing that stuff if it eases your amygdala. But don't go out at night because there are wild beasts waiting in the darkness to consume your existence.

There are no proof texts for the existence of Satan (OT) or the devil (NT). You may say it's implied but there is nothing, for example, to say the serpent in the garden was Satan. And God cursed it for its lie by taking away its legs.. The Satan of Job was most probably an angel questioning the genuineness of his righteousness. But God gave the angel (Satan/adversary to Job) the authority to test him. Job even said should he not expect evil at the hand of God, which it was because angels carry out God's will (they don't sin - if they did , they would have to die since the wages of sin is death - but angels can't die because they are immortal). If the Satan of popular myth exists then is it Peter or even God who are both termed Satan in the bible. Why would the devil in the NT be turned away by God's word being read to him if he was rebellious to it? How did Jesus destroy the devil on the cross unless it was actually sin itself (Hebrews 2:14,15)? How is God almighty if there is another god in opposition to Him? These are big problems for devil advocates. But also this. How much of your sin do you blame the devil for? James was pretty sure about the source of temptation and sin when he in James 1:14 we see the devil each time we look in the mirror, which is quite a lot if we are particularly vain. Forget Satan, the devil, Lucifer or whatever you want to call this figure of superstition and come to terms with the fact that man's heart is deceitful above of things and desperately wicked. (Jeremiah 17:9) Frankly if you believe in the Devil you don't know God and you don't want to face the truth about yourself.

What Christians get wrong about Satan is that they do NOT follow Christ's command to love Satan. As Sproul say's Satan is our enemy 1Peter 5:8 Christ commands " Love your enemies " Matthew 5:44 ; a command not a suggestion . Christians believe Satan's deceit results in most people going to hell whilst Christ is a pathetic Savior winning only a few. Sproul has a video entitled 'The reason most people will go to hell' . Sproul also believes (correctly) that Jesus is God John 1:1 and that "God is Love" 1John 4:8 and "love never fails" 1Corinthians 13:8 . Sproul agrees with 1Timothy 1:15 ..."Christ came into the world to save sinners" . Sproul and Christians are obviously a bit confused because everyone is a sinner and Jesus , who is love, came to save everyone but evidently He is going to be a big failure lol. Yes one of the purposes Christ came was to save sinners/everyone and " no purpose of God can be thwarted " Job 42:2 Before you say , what about hell and eternal punishment ; i point out that neither of these can be found in God's original Hebrew OT or Greek NT. "No one is cast off by the Lord forever, though He bring grief, He will have compassion because of the greatness of His unfailing love " Lamentations 3:31, 32

Love never fails true. Jesus tells us that all those the Father has given him will come to him and he will not lose any of them. That doesn’t include all sinners.

The only way you can be forgiven of your sin and given salvation is if you repent of your evil ways and make a commitment to follow Jesus. You just trust in Jesus Christ to save you and make you right with God. You cannot save yourself. You need a savior.
