    Which of these would you consider uni relevant? I'm a uni student atm and most of these seem like... unhelpful? like not reaching a standard that uni would expect. like , why would a uni student be using google instead of a library search database in the first place? how much learning are you actually doing by copying an inevitably typo-ridden transcript into a document instead of just. taking notes?

  • @canaryblack1013

    @canaryblack1013

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@DrMike18 Ah, perhaps it is a STEM/humanities thing in that case, as I'm a STEM student. And perhaps library databases that work differently? (e.g. if my uni has access to something, itd be on the library search engine, if it doesnt have access, the most you could scrape from g scholar would be a free abstract or whatever). I suppose the other tip from the video that concerned me wrt research techniques was the search keyword + ppt for info, as I wouldn't imagine I'd see that being allowed as a source in an assessment, but again, maybe thats just a my degree/uni/field thing In terms of notes, I'll concede, although at that point I still would worry about an automated transcript (I dont tend to see very good ones, especially when it comes to jargon, but again, maybe that's a less difficult problem when it comes to humanities rather than sciencey jargon)

  • @DrMike18

    @DrMike18

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@canaryblack1013 I would say that the databases work mostly the same, but again, it would just be whatever your library funds access to. Like there was a point where my university library stopped funding a particularly useful database to pay for one that really wasn't all that great. Keywords would differ based on the type of assignments and exams. I have my students write take-home essays. So for them being able to search for keywords/phrases would actually be very beneficial to them as they're writing their 3-10 page papers of original research and interpretation of the readings. Obviously, that would be trickier (and not ethical) to do with multiple-choice or mathematical exams. Yeah, I'd agree on the automated transcripts. They tend to be very hit or miss, especially when it comes to more science-based jargon. That's why I'd recommend you take your own notes first, but have the transcripts as a backup.

  • @canaryblack1013

    @canaryblack1013

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@DrMike18 I mean, if the uni doesn't pay for the database, surely you can't read articles included in it? My uni search tool allows me to search any article, textbook, journal, newspaper, thesis etc. that my uni library can access. If it doesn't show up on the search, I'd have to get past the paywall myself (which. lets be real, I'm not going to do). So while yes, it depends on what the library funds cover, I can't visualise many students who would pay for articles out of their own pocket rather than just use what they have available. In terms of key words, what I meant was the ppt tip specifically. If I had an essay, report, etc. to write, I'd be expected to use academic sources not random powerpoints I've found by googling "x ppt". Of course being able to search keywords is important, but again, reliable information, not something on google that could have been put online by a high schooler.

    @Preston Barrett if you can learn from the solutions, why not? I don't know if every teacher and students thinks the same but if you are a learner and having someone tell you the solution is a good idea. Been using Wolfram Alpha since years ago. Well wether you learn or just hoping for quick answers and do not learn anything is another story. Not only math problem. Google Scholars citation is also essential. Surprised that many students need to be taught about that.

    Pretty much everything here a teacher knows and actively wants you to do, these are all just ways of learning or researching effectively and independently, increasingly vital throuhout your school career. Probably the only thing a teacher would object to would be the bit at 00:46 where there's some app that just gives you answers, you wouldn't learn anything by doing that.

    I guess she's used these tips when she was in college finishing her degree in college. The most hilarious thing is write a topic that you're angry about. This is pretty easy, but you have to research why and how these problems existed in our society. Then you research the history behind it and few studies that support your hypotheses and conclude your closing thoughts. I would even give several suggestions to make the society a better place.
