@@Purple_flower09 but the main reason we managed to resist Hitler and the axis powers as a whole was because of colonialism. We had a massive empire with the resources, territory and industry to stop the Nazis rampaging across the globe and we did it not just with British soldiers but with soldiers from all across the empire. Without the British empire Germany could have won the war and as a result democracy would be non existent in Europe to this day so you should be proud of the UK'S colonial past as you are only living in a democracy today because of it

For the Swedes that made comments about British colonialism, remember What the Vikings did rapped and pillaged and during the Second World War they were neutral and turned a blind eye and did absolutely nothing to stop the Nazis and the murdering of 6 million Jews murdered in the concentration camps . You can thank the Uk and it’s commonwealth colonies for the massive sacrifices that the troops made in the fight against the Hitler and the Nazis, if it wasn’t for there actions then Sweden would be speaking German today , so you can thank use anytime

Without wishing to sound overly defensive I always get frustrated when people talk about 'they' and colonialism in Britain. I consider myself English, but my paternal Grandparents were Irish and my maternal Grandparents were from the Highlands of Scotland, both places which suffered greatly at the hands of the English upper class. Up until recently many working class English people were in workhouses, and parts of the country still suffer from extreme amounts of poverty. It was in the main the English gentry, aristocracy and upper classes that benefited from 'the empire' and despite still being very wealthy and owning huge swathes of the land in Britain/England - these people are a tiny % of the population and certainly don't represent your average Brit.

"What they did in the past with colonialism"? Good grief. smh I'm British and I've never colonised anything. Some people, those who are particularly low-resolution thinkers, seem to be unable to differentiate between the past and the present, and unable to grasp that cultural and/or ethic essentialism makes a seriously faulty connection between the individual, the group to which they belong, and how that relates (if at all) to history. That kind of groupthink is really dangerous.

Just for anyone reading this, not all Brits think like this, or believe the hype that we 'civilised' the world like Great White Saviours. Some of us realise that ancient civilisations like the Eqyptians, the Mesopotamians, the Persians, the Indians, the Chinese, were building pyramids, advancing medicine and scientific theories, developing complex political systems, and founding powerful dynasties, whilst the indigenous Britons were painting themselves blue and building huts out of mud. I'm not going to enter into a discussion about the brutality, the genocide and the oppression that the British Empire brought with them while they 'civilised' the nations they conquered, or the disgusting views those Britons had about the people they ruled over, but suffice to say, 'doing more good than harm' is a bold statement that history will not treat kindly.

Yes ok ,but what it’s the problem about just admit the colonialism? In my country (Spain) nowadays at the schools they explain very clearly and raw the atrocities that Spain committed specially in the Americas. I don’t think that’s the case in the uk. I only seen answers like your answer,of course it was other countries but they are not proud of that unlike the Uk.

@@joseescobaralegre5421 Oh we do admit to it. Being a powerful nation we went out and conquered. And, we do talk about it in our schools. Dont worry, our education system is very left wing. What they dont say is the three times we were colonised as a nation and used as slaves. That we were also taken as slaves by the North Africans to work in their quarries. However, the colonisation helped civilise us, the same as we then went out and tried to civilise other nations. It is never good at the time but you do reap benefits further down the road. Many have only reverted to type once we left. The reason you will be seeing comments like mine is because we are told we cannot be proud of the UK or we are far-right. We should be ashamed of our country because of our past. Never other countries who did the same, just the UK. Never Germany after two world wars. But we should be proud. The UK has given the world one hell of a lot, including the world wide web, the industrial revolution, the world's common language. The abolishment of slavery that we led the march on and funded a Navy for, for many years which took some of our power because of what it cost us. I could go on. So, sorry, but on here is the only place we are allowed to be proud. So, please forgive us for loving our nation.

The guy who says Brits don't give a damn about the poor is partly right - the ruling class and the media certainly don't, and neither do the hardcore of traditional Conservative voters. However, most ordinary people do care, and spend a lot of time volunteering, raising money for charities and trying to help people who are worse off than themselves. Inequality has exploded here over the last 10-15 years, and it has been extremely painful to witness - I live in one of the most deprived cities in England and it has been awful to see more homeless people sleeping on the streets, and food banks unable to meet the high demand. Our backward political system and terrible media make it look like we're an uncaring cold country, but if you actually survey people about their opinions, the majority of people are just as centre-left as the rest of Northern Europe. Scotland certainly is - which is why I really hope they vote for independence if they have another referendum. Sadly England will never be able to escape the ruling class which owns it.

Fascinating that even after the era of Brexit and BoJo’s Prime Ministership, the UK still comes off much more positively in Sweden! The Gothenburg gentlemen had an (accurate) critique about how the British political class doesn’t seem to care much at all for the poor, but even that wasn’t enough to wipe out his positive orientation. Why is it that the UK is seen more favorably than the US, despite having many of the same dysfunctions and ugly aspects of history and culture?

It’s probably due to UK and Sweden being the instigator of, the one who proposed, wrote etc a lot of what is now the EU. We rather worked together, with the other frugal 4 (5 if you count Finland) keeping EU from exploding either economically or legislative

@@mcarlsson74 Martin thank you for those words about the UK. I would like to add that millions of us here are sad about the Brexit disaster, we didn't want this and it upsets us to know that our government has caused hurt across Europe. Personally I would love to come back into the EU but it's probably not possible in my lifetime.
