We use better brakes now These are Drum Brakes We now use Disc brakes

This video helped me a lot when i started working on my moped, the first transportation device i ever worked on.

The narrator killed himself when they switched to hydraulic brakes.

hydraulic breaks allow for more leverage, since pressure on a small section of the fluid multiplies over a large area. (this is how the car jacks work at autobody shops). However, hydraulic brakes are more complex due to having a fluid and other moving parts. back in the 30's, i'm sure they weren't able to produce as complex of a system reliably. you could also say that regenerative braking is a third form of brake system, and maybe in the future we'll be asking why electric brakes weren't in use now.

They yell because microphones back then were of low fidelity. It was common practice in voice over work back then.

Yes sir, this was the last year for mechanical brakes in 1935, Chevrolet going into the 1936 model year with the old favorites hydraulic drum brakes. The brakes were Bendix under license. The great man, Henry Ford would not pay for the license to use hydraulic drum brakes he had his engineers design Ford Brakes for Ford cars. The year was 1938 model year in USA and 1939 across the international range of V8 models equipped with castor oil fluid hydraulic drum brakes which was good for 30 years less fair wear and tear. In saying Ford brakes were much superior is an understatement, finest brakes with fade resistant qualities.,Yes Sir another fine example of fine Fords.

In case of Mechanical brakes, if brakes failed, the brakes would automatically apply by design. This was design in atleast Austin 10.

I thought they had hydraulic brakes in the 30's. Amazing how they designed cable brakes.

Ironically the hydraulic brake came out 1 year after this video was made.

On modern brakes a rusty brake line that pops a pinhole leak will kill the whole brake system. The cable linkage seems more reliable, but without the advantage of hydraulic pressure.

What century do you live in? ;) Since the 1970s all cars have had double brake-circuits and if your car has anti-locking brakes you have an individual circuit for each wheel. Checking your brake lines regularly - like once a year - will very effectively eliminate the danger of rust damage. Not that any car built in the last 20 years has been equipped with rusting brake lines ...

I have a 2000 F-150 and on 3 occasions I have lost braking power completely. Once due to a caliper breaking off (poor maintenance from the previous owner), and twice due to pinhole leaks in rusty brake lines. On all 3 occasions hydraulic pressure was lost and the only way to stop was to downshift and coast. The brake pedal was as useful as the clutch pedal in stopping the vehicle.

Not so sir. Modern brakes have dual circuit systems .And another thing....brakes do not stop anything apart from the rotor or drum. The tires friction contact do the stopping. With no friction, as on ice or in the air, stopping can only be hoped for!

michaelXXLF When my rear right brake line rotted out on my 1995 Subaru Legacy ( 2 weeks after i purchased it used) I lost all brake power completely, had to downshift and use my mechanical parking brake to stop my car.

our delicate weak feet wouldnt have the strength to pull the cable to have as much pressure as a hydraulic system

if you watch the 1936 axle video the factory workers arms are giant today factory workers have jacked thumbs from actuating the buttons for a lift

They found out that wired brakes rusted and eventually snapped. Even today's cars still use a sealed cable for hand brakes. My old 1965 Valiant has exposed steel cable used for hand brake but between the wheels and the chassis the cable is inside a jacket (a flexible tube) so that it can bounce up/down and still stay connected with the rear drums. I still have the lovely Valiant.

Had a 74 Gemini, the handbrake cable exposed meant there was always the risk of the braided wire either kinking or even a strand breaking means it get caught in or eventually break. Had a experience where the accelerator cable frayed and broken strand got caught on cable return hole in firewall and wouldn't return to neutral when foot taken off accelerator. Got stuck in high speed with the carbie return spring not able to return frayed cable near pedal jamming it from closing. Needless to say after traveling way over the speed limit with cable stuck, had the bright idea of turning off engine and coasting to stop. I shudder when I think of computer controlled pedals with no option of able turn off engine or pedal. been cases of computer going arse up and jamming to high speed with no way to turn off engines.

Hydraulic systems are more effective at multiplying force, lines/hoses can be routed anywhere unlike cables and linkages. Cars have gotten heavier, speeds have increased, hydraulic brakes usually have some sort of power (vacuum or hydraulic) assist to reduce driver effort to stop a vehicle.

But how they were able to make the ABS work using those steel cables? elecric motors or something?

There was no abs in the 30s

If you rolled up with cable brakes today it wouldn't pass inspection 😂

The strength of steel from pedal to wheel. Don't trust those new fangled hydraulic systems!

I still don't get why they used drum brakes back then and not disc brakes? Drum brakes are so much more complicated to make and maintain and less efficient.

Contrary to urban legend, it is not illegal to drive barefoot, unless you are riding a motorcycle in Alabama. You get the best feel of the pedals when barefoot.
