What starting gymnastics late has taught me in life.

Ойын-сауық

Hey guys! If you've been following me for a while, you're well aware that this channel was originally dedicated to my journey in gymnastics. I was definitely a late bloomer and had a huge disadvantage in a sport where age and physicality matters so much but I'm so thankful I had such empowering coaches and supportive teammates who have ultimately encouraged me to keep driving for what I truly had a passion for. Starting gymnastics late isn't ideal but it has taught me so many life values and discipline that I probably would've never inched close if I had started gymnastics way earlier. Here are just a few of the values I learned while starting gymnastics late :)

"This time next year, you'll wish you had started today" This quote has been a game changer with anything I'm hesitant to challenge in life. I hope it helps you all to understand that if you had just started the second you were contemplating it, a year from now, you'll have achieved goals you would've never even thought of. I picked up figure skating at age 25. God idk where I would be without it because it has been such a joy in my life! I remember thinking 13 was too old to start anything.. man if I had started figure skating at age 13.. God knows the amount of skills I could've achieved compared to now. My 27 year old self now looks back at her and all I can say is, 13 is young! Just like this, if I had thought 25 was too old to start figure skating and never gave it a chance, my 35 year old self would've never forgiven her. So again, this time next year, you'll wish you had started today.

I love this video! I’m 14 years old and I think I’m too old to start gymnastics! I just don’t know how to start, I can do back tucks and stuff on trampoline and I can do front walk over, handstand, round off, and all those things on ground! Can you tell me how to start like signing up and stuff like what to I tell the coaches about where I am! Thank you I love your quote that you have!!

I started practicing gymnastics at home during 3rd grade. Me and my sister would lay our beds on the floor run to them and do a landing flip to the couch. I got wood from my dads stuff and used them as beams. I used the sides of my trampoline to teach myself how to stand up on a bar. Could hold being in splits for 1 minute. So in 4th grade me, my sister, and my cousin decided to join. I was so excited to be at the gym. I trained for about a year and a half and got to level three. I don’t know why I did it but I ended quitting. I said I didn’t like waking up in the mornings and that it was to much money for my parents. Now I’m entering 8th grade and wish I never quitted. Looking back at it I really did have a passions for gymnastics. Now I’m starting to think about going back but I feel as if I’m too old. Your quote truly resonated with me now I’m thinking about practicing and going back to fulfilling my passion.

I'm 14 and I desperately want to start gymnastics! I taught myself simple skills such as a handstand, cartwheel, backbend etc - but I'm so scared if I do start because either- if I go into a class categorised by age, everyone would be doing amazing skills while I'd be learning how to do a backwalkover! That would be extremely embarrassing for me. On the other hand, if the classes are categorised by level them I'd be in the same class as 6 year olds, which would be even more embarrassing!! So what do I do, join gymnastics even if I get a little embarrassed or not join? Xxxx

Hey! Thanks for watching :) You probably won't be grouped solely based on level which means you won't be stuck with kids way younger than you. In most gyms, you're grouped into a beginner, intermediate, advanced class by age! I completely sympathize with where you're coming from because I was terrified of the same situation. I was intimidated by not the girls in my group (for they were my age and my level) but by the team girls who would also train at the same time and would be really young. But I NEVER regretted starting. It has given me such valuable memories and friends that i consider family. My best memories were those when I was at the gym and it's not just the sport itself but the discipline, perseverance, and most of all, the fun that you have that really equips you with further challenges in your life! Believe in your body and the physical and mental strength that you just may strongly possess and you'll be surprised at how quickly you learn such a physical sport! i definitely recommend you to give it a shot. There's no hurt in trying. But there's always a hurt in wondering "what if". Hope this helped and best of luck to you!!! xoxo Rachel

There is a dark side to being a young gymnast.. those flips you mentioned them doing do not come without a lot of practice at such a young age. I started gymnastics at 18 months old and was a "prodigy," eventually working myself up to the point where I was training for 40+ hours a week in the gym. I sacrificed my friends, physical state, happiness and education. I eventually quit at the age of 10 after developing severe OCD and mind blocks from the stress, and bawled my eyes out on the day of my last practice. I was promised the Olympics, and now I find myself stuck watching others accomplishing all I had ever wanted behind a screen. On a drive back from practice one night, my father told me, "The best gymnast in the world is probably sitting at home eating chips, never having been given the opportunity to accomplish what she wanted or presented with the right circumstances." I am 15 now and want to go back, but I am scared of history repeating itself and jeopardizing my parents financial situation. I am also scared that it is too late to accomplish much, but I need to get rid of this bitterness of not living up to my potential.

I just started rythmic gymnastics at 12 in a gymnastics centre with age categories, and I just want to tell to the other people who want to start late, the key is to not give a shit about what other people may think, mind your own bussines, looking up at someone won't help you with anything. While it may seem emberassing to lean a flip while other people learn complex things, if you are going to work hard enough you can get to their level. In Romania there is a saying: "the best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is right now." So don't waste any second thinking about what the others might think

I remember my school took a field trip to the gym and they started to teach us basic skills, such as, Cartwheels, roundoffs, and handstands. Those basic skills and I remember I could do all those things perfect fine that they had me teach the rest of my class. Then they separated me like 5 feet away from my class, put mats down and helped spot me. I didn’t know I could do back walkovers, backflips, back handsprings, front walkovers, front flips, and front handspring on floor. Then on beam, I did cartwheels, handstands, round off, leaps, turns, walkovers, handsprings, and back tucks. (And on floor) On bar I had my pullover, back hip circle, glide kip, cast, squat on jump, and more. On Vault I could do more flips and I wasn’t scared oddly. Then the coaches started to speak to my teacher and my teacher called my mom to come down to the gym right away. She came down right away and she signed papers and they had her consent to put me in a level 5 class while my school class was barely learning normal things. My class was staring at me like if I was an alien 😂 I got to level 9 in 3 years and competed. I have 10 gold medals, and 4 silver. I quit because I had to start focusing more on school. I was prodigy and I still practice on my own but it isn’t the same.

Hm.. as great as it all sounds, I think it's actually impossible for someone to get to level 9 in 3 years because you would have to score out of a level. Meaning you did would've had to skip 2 levels, each season.. And in order to do that, you would have to score into nationals and regionals in an optional level (level 6 and up) ..

I started gymnastics at 13, but stopped few months later because I need to focus on my study and I felt out of place because I'm a beginner and my classmates were competing and I don't want to waste money by paying a session where they don't teach anything, because they are focused on those who compete. Then last February 2021, I started Gymnastics at 27 and I really enjoyed it because it is a stress reliever from work. i have fun in the beginners class even if my classmates were 4-9 years old and I am the oldest.

I have a round off bhs, a handstand dismount on beam, and quite more. However there are only 2 gyms in my area I did gymnastics quite young I hated it though so I quit and started soccer. I really really really want to start again but I’m nervous since I have friends who go to the gym I go to and they’re level 5 and 6. You inspired me with this video but I’m still kinda nervous.

I started gymnastics recently at the age of 12. I had been a self taught gymnast for most of my life. I had always wanted to do gymnastics but 1 I didn’t want to feel left out because the other kids would ever be better than me, and would have already made friends and 2 my mum didn’t want me to do it because she thought I would get hurt. I got the basic skills cartwheel, round off, handstand , bridge, backbend, front limber, back kick over, front walkover, by myself. And recently I landed a front hand spring on a trampoline. The reason I started was because my friend said she was doing it so two weeks after I started, I payed for the 8 week session myself. And I also payed for my Leo myself. Btw my mum did contribute when this trial ended. I loved it and I still love it today , and I consider it a highlight to my week. Oh no kill me now tbh this is soooo cringeyyyyyy

Hey I started gymnastics when I was 8 years old before that I just practised simple stuff like cartwheels bridges etc I did a class for a month but had to quit because my parents didn't have the money at the time after a few months I practised some more stuff when I was 9 I has SUPER determined to get my walkovers (front and back) I already had my splits after a bit I kinda stopped because I kept trying and didn't get it right for over a year and a half practising for a few weeks then quiting practising then quiting untill fall/winter 2020 I finally got in the habit to practising everyday I was 10 years old and thought was a normal age until I saw these 11 year olds doing level 7-9 while i was just a level 2 I got my front Walkover on the ground in early 2021 and recently got my back Walkover and my mom finally signed me up to a class (level 1) I was kinda mad since I was definitely over level 1 and close to getting my BHS and can already do a pullover overall was not a level 1 but my mom moved me up a class last week and she says she might move me up again anyways everyone in my class in 5-8 not to mention I'm very close to 5ft and it makes it pretty intimidating but I'm just asking am I to old to be in higher levels before I'm a teen? I'm 17 in just a few days. All that beam gymnastics and the really fancy tricks don't really interest me, because I am a musical theatre person, my weakest asset of the triple threat (singing, dancing and acting) is my dancing, and I have been thinking for a bit whether I should start gymnastics just for the strength and conditioning and for those more acrobatic dance moves because Musical Theatre is my dream. I don't know if it's worth it to go join a gymnastics team or if I should try to teach myself the more basic acrobatic moves that I want. Essentially is it worth it to start gymnastics just for your more basic dance acrobatics? I also don't want to eat too much time because now I want to get involved with more theatre around me. Should I take the time for the tricks and flexibility or just focus on the more basic dance and self teach. Any guidance would be great, my ability at making decisions is really bad and it has really gotten to me over the time

(Rant)The thing is I tried gymnastics when I was 6 but quit after one class bc I didn’t like it. Then I started liking it at 7 and took gymnastics classes on and off until 13, only taking once a week classes when I was doing it. I did learn some skills and I did practice by myself at home sometimes but i was inconsistent with practicing, so it took me a while to get skills. Before COVID I did once a week classes at level 3-4 and because of quarantine I had to stop and rarely practiced at home. I regret not being more determined and consistent when I was younger to develop more skills. Now I’m 14 and I want to do gymnastics but feel like there’s no way I could do gym team bc of quarantine and that I would only be able to go once a week. I used to feel like there wasnt a point of going to gymnastics if I couldn’t join team, but that’s not true. I always wanted to join team but felt like I couldn’t bc it’s something you need to fully commit to and I wouldnt be able to go more than once a week. Recently felt like joining dance is a better option but dance team is something that you have to also commit to I think so I’m stuck.

Then when I was 11 I hurt my back and couldn't walk for a month and struggled to do any sports or stretch my back at all for 1.5 years along with chronic back pain. I am now 14 and just starting to get my confidence back but im terrified im going to get hurt again. My dreams were to go to the Olympics but its never going to happen now. You can do it! Keep your potential and faith! I’m starting this year! I’m 14 scared but don’t let anything stop you from doing what you love you can do anything you want! It takes so much motivation to get where you want to be at but I believe in you, and I believe in myself, I have so many things going on but I know with faith I can do this! And you can too.. What I like about this video is that it teaches you even when you’re beat down physically or mentally it doesn’t take anything you can do in life. I believe in you!
