We want to play a system that suits Bellingham, Foden, Saka and Kane. If one of them needs resting, or one of them gets injured god forbid, you want a player who can slot into the same system and in a perfect world, you don't notice they're missing. Palmer is that player. He can deputise for any of the front four and has shown he is comfortable anywhere across the front 4 this season and is very confident, young, agile, creative and the kind of player you want to be getting used to these tournaments. He is also debatably England's best penalty taker after Kane. Bowen is already in his prime whereas Palmer will get better and better, it's just the obvious choice.

what flav and james said made it clear to me, if klopp thought bowen was any better than Elliott as an all round player he probably wud be at Liverpool, but he's probably not, he's a classic case of a Zaha or a JWP or a Drinkwater or a Phillips or a Vardy or even, dare we say it, a Grealish, can shine at a mid table club but probably not good enuff to start week in week out for a top club.

I don't see how it can't be Benitez as best non prem winning manager. Consistently in the Top 4 with a financially crippled club, pushed United all the way in 08-09, won an FA Cup and the CL at Liverpool and Europa League at Chelsea, and you are throwing Marco Silva into the chat for keeping a mid table team mid table. It's not even a discussion. I'm proud of you both for being sensible.

Possible bit: Slugs Abroad This bit could be about the experiences of fellow slugs in other countries and the culture clashes they may have. For example, coming out to the US to coach football with some teams, we had a match the other weekend where a kid was injured and the coach had to come on and check on him. Immediately after the coach comes onto the pitch, every player (U12s) suddenly took a knee until the player was back up. I get why they’re doing it, as a sign of respect to the player and apparently they do it in other American sports, but at the same time kneeling does nothing. What are your thoughts?

Best striker that didn't play for a top 6 team and to have never won the league - maybe a push because I'm not entirely sure Tottenham were a top 6 team in 2007/08/09 but Darren Bent consistently scored goals. It's quite difficult to find these players because they always end up getting bought by top 6 teams because they score goals!

2:40 reminds me of Leicester's manager pre-game against Leeds being asked about this being a big game. He said "for them it's a big game, for us it's just another game". .... they then lost 3-1, Leeds having done the double over them, and two weeks later had gone from a 17 point gap to Leeds to being behind on goal difference. Instilling a superior attitude in your players can be great, but arrogance can cause some pretty horific downfalls when it starts going wrong.

Bowen is much more direct than Palmer in attack. He loves to run at defenders, cut inside and shoot, or try to get to the by line and cross it in. Also, he makes very smart runs in behind the defense and offers much more defensively as he gets back and covers the right back

i agree wth you about bowen. when i look at englands RHS players, you start saka and then you have sterling, palmer, foden maybe, sancho(?) etc, only sterling is similar enough to saka that you wouldnt have to change systems. Saka gives the team alot of width, with the ability to cut in or go on the outside. All of those other players love to come centrally, which is just going to congest key areas of the pitch. Bowen on the other hand will do a similar job to saka with some subtle differences (maybe more of a tendancy to cross?), and will be the best for the team balance wise. if its up to me, bowen goes and plays when saka isnt needed/injured.

Southgate's problem is he hasn't moved with the times. He doesn't let players play to their modern strength. Foden, for example has become ineffective because he wasn't allowed to be. Even Dunk, who has been one of the best centre halves as far as forward passes is concerned, tried twice to do what Brighton has turned into a goal scoring situation, but Southgate didn't allow for anybody to be forward enough to turn it into a goal chance.

The key to England having much more tactical flexibility in attack is their choice of CBs. The problem is, there isn't really a case to drop Maguire because he's been fairly solid. If you play someone like Joe Gomez next to Stones, there is always a solid back 3 left to defend when a full back pushes up. You can play these two back fours, depending on who you want to have bombing on: 1. Chilwell Gomez Stones Walker 2. Shaw Gomez Stones Trent

  • @edenholt4394

I think I’d play Shaw Maguire Stones Walker for the hardest games but swap Walker for Trent in the games we should win. Chilwell looked poor to me the other day and Maguire offers way more when it comes to set pieces then Gomez. Even as a city fan, I so badly want to make Trent work in the squad because I think he offers so much, but in games like France or Brazil it’s hard to make a case for him over Walker

(I know this is long but I promise it’s insightful) Right, I hate international breaks with a passion, but selfishly. If I’m honest, international breaks are not that bad. We as fans get to switch off which keeps us hungry for more - imagine if there was no gap between seasons And constant football - the same reason we don’t want World Cup every 2 years and a factor for why we don’t want the new UCL format hosting the big games regularly. On top of that, yes there’s already enough games for players, but only the best of the best actually play all of these games. On top of this, if we moved games to the end of the season, there would still be as many games but players would just be more fit for what fans deem “more important” games. For the majority of the league the international break is a rest. And we see the biggest players be pulled from the March break every year - city, pool, and arsenal players this year. We also want smelly Southgate to experiment more and bring in fringe players - we saw Mainoo, Dunk, Konsa, Bowen, Gordon all play this break. On top of this, these are big moments for these players careers and build heritage, Dunk proving Southgate right, and Mainoo making his debut at Wembley, as well as Rice making his 50th appearance and captaining the side are huge moments for the player and their family who dream of these and will remember these in their old. At the end of the day, players don’t HAVE to play if they don’t want too - look at Ben White, Southgate said he made the call and Ben declined. If players really wanted their rest or wages they could easily decline the call up, but players like Bowen see this as the chance to play themselves in. The break also gives players the chance to get away from their squads and meet up with their national teammates and take their foot off the gas, and spend time with each other which they will value. Also, just because we had Southgate for so long we don’t care for the breaks, but teams like Nagelesmaans Germany who are HOSTING this years Euros need time to test their system, new players, new tactics, and bond. If Southgate leaves next year I guarantee this break will be looked as good for the new manager to understand his players. One of the reasons we hate this break is because we have national team stability. Fans will always be unhappy that their favourite fringe, niche player make an appearance, but Dunk may have proven Southgate right - RDZ said he was one of Europes best defenders! And of course one game isn’t defining but it was his chance to make a statement. We know once the tourny starts, England will go their pragmatic boring sleeves and get results. On top of this, Rice captaining England, being the 10th Arsenal player to do so is football heritage - things like this will make it so much better when/if England DO win a trophy. Of course there are injuries, but these players often carry injuries and play through at this stage because it means a lot to them personally, and because of the stage of the season. As for Southgate, it’d be nice to have a more explosive manager who’s less a company man, but international football managers are notoriously strange with selection. Look at France - Deschamps barely plays Saliba who is pretty unanimously the best prospect CB in the world. Look at the backline Brazil fielded, that backline likely won’t see the light of day in a real competition. Patriotism in this country is pretty meaningless, but for other countries it means a great deal, think about lesser footballing nations like Peru, Slovenia, Romania to name a few. These international games will be more important than their club games. And although meaningless to us, this break for some decided qualification, and provides spectacles like Spain Brazil 3-3, which is footballing heritage. Believe it or not I hate the break at this stage of the season, but it is very England-centric and England focused to just fuck off the breaks all together. The only solution would be to move the games to the end of the season and have the season end earlier, but that changes the established norm and requires a reshape to league fixturing worldwide and would take huge coordination.

Love these vids... But I would say as much as these internationals are a pain in the arse for clubs, fans don't like the timing of them etc etc.... dunk and mainoo are great examples of why these internationals are there. We now know dunk can't go and mainoo should 100% go.... Without these 2 games it's highly likely dunk would have gone and mainoo would have been with u21's....just because we don't like them doesn't mean they are worthless and sometimes finding out a player didn't work (dunk) is just as much useful information for Southgate as finding out something did work.

Always saying just slapping bad teams, Arsenal beat Liverpool 3-1 and smashed Newcastle in this 8 game run as well. I think we can win and that by itself is enough to make so happy because even last year I didn't think we could beat City even at home. Going to the Etihad chest out fully back Arteta and the lads COYG

Best manager to never win the league is obviously Rafa Benitez. A Champions League at Liverpool and Europa League at Chelsea and got Liverpool into the top 4 in 5 out of 6 seasons. Not to mention how valued he was by Newcastle fans.

Completely unrelated comment. Darwin Nunez is the new Giroud. Abit leggy and not a natural finisher, got a lot of stick early on, now slowly but surely evolving into a dreadnought around the box. Samurai footballers. That is all.
